Speaking mre than ne language culd be cnnected t slwer aging, accrding t a new study. An internatinal team f researchers lked at data (数据) frm mre than 86,000 adults frm 27 Eurpean cuntries. They were all aged between 51 and 90.
The researchers used this data t create mdels f peple’s “bilgical (生物的) age” based n their physical and mental health, and cmpared it t the number f years they had actually lived. They fund that peple frm cuntries where peple mstly speak nly ne language were abut twice as likely t have a bilgical age that was lder than their real age.
And peple frm cuntries where peple usually speak mre than ne language were 2.17times less likely t be aging faster than their real age. In fact, the mre languages peple usually spke, the less likely they were t age faster. Experts have said that at least half f the wrld’s ppulatin speaks mre than ne language. Hwever, up t 75% f peple wh speak English as a first language nly speak English.
The benefits f learning a secnd language are clear, accrding t the study. The researchers said peple shuld be encuraged t keep their brains active by learning and using mre languages. This is smething that gvernments culd think abut as a way t help prtect peple’s health, they added. They described language learning as a lw-cst way t imprve ur health as we get lder.
But experts say learning r speaking mre languages isn’t the nly way t slw ur aging. Accrding t the American Heart Assciatin, there are eight key things yu can d t slw yur bdy’s aging: eat better; sleep well, stay active, dn’t smke, and manage yur weight, bld sugar, bld pressure and chlesterl (胆固醇).
      8. What is the main finding f the study?
      A. Learning languages helps the mind.B. Getting lder affects language skills.
      C. Exercise is gd fr learning languages.D. Speaking mre languages can slw dwn aging.
      9. Hw did researchers decide peple’s bilgical age?

      C. By checking health f bdy and mind.D. By studying hw peple cmmunicate.
      10. What is the researchers’ suggestin accrding t paragraph 4?
      A. Keeping brains active by exercising.B. Encuraging peple t learn mre languages.

The next big vlcanic disaster is mre likely t cme frm sleeping vlcanes that are hardly watched, rather than famus nes like Etna r Yellwstne. Why are ‘quiet’ vlcanes mre dangerus? This is partly because f cmmn human biases (偏见). Many peple think that smething that has been quiet will stay quiet. If a vlcan hasn’t erupted fr a lng time, peple ften naturally cnsider it is safe.
If peple can quickly picture an event in their mind, they think it’s mre likely t happen. This is a quick trick f the mind. Well-knwn vlcanes r eruptins, such as the Icelandic ash clud frm 2010, are familiar and can feel threatening (威胁), while remte vlcanes with n recent eruptins seldm register at all.
These biases create a dangerus prblem: we nly spend the mst mney after a disaster has already happened. El Chichón, fr example, was nly mnitred (监测) after the 1982 disaster. Hwever, three-quarters f large eruptins(like El Chichón and bigger) cme frm vlcanes that have been quiet fr at least 100 years and, as a result, receive the least attentin.
We must prepare fr vlcanes ahead f time, nt just after they erupt. With prper watch n vlcanes, with cmmunities prepared t respnd (反应), and with gd teamwrk between experts and the gvernment, we can save thusands f peple. Disasters have been averted in these ways in 1991 (at Munt Pinatub in the Philippines), in 2019 (at Munt Merapi in Indnesia) and in 2021 (at La Sufriere n the Caribbean island f Saint Vincent).
T clse these gaps, the wrld needs t pay mre attentin t under-mnitred vlcanes in places such as Latin America, suth-east Asia, Africa and the Pacific-places where millins f peple live clse t vlcanes that have little r n histrical recrd. This is where the greatest risks lie, and where even small amunts f mney spent n mnitring, early warning and cmmunity preparedness culd save the mst lives.
      12. What can we learn abut hw mst peple see sleeping vlcanes?
      A. It may cause wrng decisins.B. It fcuses n recent happenings.
      C. It matches scientific guesses.D. It cnsiders famus nes mst.
      13. What des the underlined wrd “averted” mean in paragraph 4?
      A. Expected.B. Prevented.C. Recrded.D. Cntacted.
      14. Hw des the authr think f spending mney n vlcan mnitring?
      A. It needs t be cut dwn nw.B. It is suitable fr develped cuntries.
      C. It brings great value at a lw cst.D. It requires mre internatinal help.
      15. What is the best title fr the text?
      A. The Cst f Mnitring Vlcanes mattersB. Why Famus Vlcanes Threaten Us Mst
      C. Hw Vlcanes Change Human ActivitiesD. The Quiet Vlcanes May Have Great Risks
