After I discvered Diet Cke in 1982, I drank at least three 12-unce cans nearly every day fr the next fur decades. I was the persn wh avided certain airlines because they nly served Pepsi. At varius times I tried t stp, but I culd never prevent myself frm drinking it fr lnger than a week.
This year, smething happened that changed everything. I had been feeling pain in the left side f my stmach fr mnths, but dctrs were unable t figure ut the prblem. At the same time, I began nticing that my belved drink left an awful aftertaste I had never nticed befre. In late June, after pening up my secnd can f the day, pains sht acrss my stmach, and that was my last sda. Just like that, I was dne, after 39 years. Why did it take s lng? Was I truly psychlgically dependent, r was it simply a bad habit?
The American Psychiatric Assciatin desn’t specifically list Diet Cke addictin. Hwever, research indicates its addictive ptential. Ashley Gearhardt at the University f Michigan pints t the tw “culprits” that can be fund in Diet Cke: aspartame (阿斯巴甜) and caffeine. Aspartame, 200 times sweeter than regular sugar, and caffeine wrk tgether t keep us desiring mre.
As f nw, I’m n Day 41 f being Diet Cke-free. The initial days were extremely difficult due t caffeine withdrawal, but I’m cmmitted t maintaining this new lifestyle. My stmach hurts less, and my sweet tth is nt as persistent. I am quite pleased with myself fr having altered a lifelng habit. If can d this, I can d anything, even if it takes 40 years.

A cmpany called Clssal Bisciences has created thick-haired mice that they are calling “Clssal Wlly Mice”. These mice are a step tward the cmpany’s gal f creating the extinct wlly mammth (猛犸象).
Clssal fcuses n replacing extinct animals that went extinct lng ag. Its main prject is t recreate wlly mammths. These mammths, which lked like hairy elephants, died ut abut 4,000 years ag after the last ice age.
Clssal isn’t trying t bring wlly mammths back t life. Instead, it wants t change Asian elephant DNA t create an animal similar t a wlly mammth. The cmpany believes this culd help regain balance t the Arctic envirnment. Sme scientists questin this.
Actually, wrking with Asian elephants wuld be very difficult. They are endangered and take 22 mnths t have a baby. S, Clssal fcuses n mice instead. Mice are mre manageable, cst-effective, simpler t handle, and have a quicker reprductive cycle.
Fr the experiment, researchers lked at hw wlly mammths stayed warm, fcusing n their lng, thick hair. They cmpared mammth DNA t elephant DNA. Using CRISPR (a gene-editing technlgy), they edited muse DNA t change nt just ne gene, but as many as seven genes at ne time. This made the experiment special.
The results were striking. Lead scientist Beth Shapir said, “We ended up with adrable (可爱的) mice that have lnger, wlly, glden cats.” This is gd news fr Clssal. Since they plan t use elephant DNA t create smething like a mammth, they will need t edit many genes— perhaps as many as 85. The cmpany is pleased that it has been able t target these genes fr hair s accurately.
Many experts are impressed with Clssal’s ability t edit many genes at nce. But nt everyne thinks the wlly mice are a big deal. Sme peple questin the cmpany’s plans t bring back extinct animals. They say it might be better t help animals that are currently endangered. Hwever, Clssal believes its wrk culd be f assistance in many situatins, including prtecting endangered animals.
      8. What is the main gal f Clssal Bisciences?
      A. T create a new kind f muse called “Clssal Wlly Mice”.
      B. T change the DNA f Asian elephant.
      C. T restre extinct animals like wlly mammth.
      D. T clne wlly mammths fr scientific research.
      9. Why did Clssal chse mice fr their experiments?
      A. They are nt in danger f extinctin.
      B. They are cheaper and reprduce faster.
      C. Their genes are much simpler t target.
      D. They have a relatively lnger lifespan.
      10. What des Clssal Bisciences think f its wrk?
      A. Fruitless.B. Beneficial.C. Impressive.D. Efficient.
      11. What is the best title fr the text?

The cry f the fishing cat sunds like that f a duck, and the rest f this mid-sized animal als seems well-suited t a fishing life. Unlike ther cats, the fishing cat is nt afraid f water. It likes t swim in water. The cat’s narrw head makes it suitable fr underwater life. And its ears can mve dwnwards while in water, which helps prevent the water frm entering its ears. Besides, its thick cat prevents water frm reaching its skin, keeping it warm in cld water.
“Fishing cats are wetland experts,” says wildlife bilgist Tiasa Adhya. Her research shws hw the shy animal fishes. In deep water, the cat waits patiently n the banks fr hurs, very much like a nrmal cat catching a gldfish, befre jumping int the water fr the kill. In the shallws, thugh, the cat frces fish t leave their hiding places by mving wildly with heavy steps, like a kid playing in rainwater n the rad.
But the wrld has lst almst 90 percent f its wetlands since the 1700s. Nwadays, things like intensive aquaculture (密集水产养殖) and pllutin destry the living places f freshwater fish, which makes fishing cats stand against farmers. The hungry cats start t attack farmed fish, even chickens and gats, and t reduce their lsses, farmers set up traps and use harmful medicine t catch the cats. Once fund alng river systems frm Pakistan t Vietnam, the cats have been almst ut f sight.
Nw, scientists are testing new appraches, including the planting f a kind f special rice, t deal with this. With its gd quality, its sale culd help farmers make mre mney, making intensive aquaculture less attractive. Grwing n nutrients (滋养物) washed in by rainwater rather than n human-made nutrients, the rice als creates living places fr fishing cats and ther animals. The idea is that in places where there is plenty t feed cats and fishermen, killings are unnecessary. “Nbdy takes a lss,” Adhya explains, “when smebdy takes a fish.”
      12. What enables the fishing cat t be expert at fishing?
      A. Its lud cry.B. Its light weight.
      C. Its sharp eyesight.D. Its physical appearance.
      13. What des paragraph 2 center n?
      A. Hw fishing cats search fr wetlands.
      B. Why fishing cats prefer t stay still.
      C. Fishing cats’ methds f catching fish.
      D. The differences between fishing cats and ther cats.
      14. What’s the bvius result f the reduced wetlands?
      A. Fishing cats are in danger f dying ut.B. Fishing cats catch mre freshwater fish.
      C. The price f farmed fish keeps ging up.D. Farmers stp raising fish in wetlands.
      15. What d scientists expect t achieve with the special rice?
      A. T save mre wetlands fr turism.B. T reduce farming csts fr farmers.
      C. T help fishing cats keep a balanced diet.D. T benefit bth fishing cats and humans.
