Our planet quakes thusands f times a year, but we still can’t predict exactly when and where the next earthquakes will strike. What if animals’ dd behavir culd warn us?
Researchers have reviewed hundreds f reprts n pre-quake abnrmal animal behavirs, but mre were just anecdtes. Gelgist Jim Berkland cunted newspaper ads lking fr runaway cats and dgs. On Octber 13, 1989, he tld a newspaper reprter a big quake wuld strike in a week. Fur days later, the Lma Prieta mega-quake hit! But the scientific cmmunity still rejected Berkland’s thery. He didn’t dcument every predictin, s nbdy culd measure his accuracy rate. Actual scientific evidence has t be repeatable. And a cnnectin between a cause and an effect has t be strnger than randm chance thrugh careful experimentatin and data cllectin. Califrnia researchers in the 1970s built cntrlled habitats t mnitr the wheel-running activity f pcket mice. These habitats happened t be in an active earthquake area. Then the 1971 San Fernand earthquake struck nearby. The researchers checked their data and fund n big changes in hw lng the animals ran in their wheels r stayed undergrund befre the earthquake activity. What might the next experiment shw?
Researchers frm 150 universities wrldwide are wrking n a new study called the ICARUS prject. The prject tracks many small animal species such as birds, bats, and turtles (海龟) fr the purpse f scientific research. One grup f researchers is lking fr pssible cnnectins between animal behavir and earthquakes. If they find a reliable cnnectin, this culd save hundreds f thusands f human lives. ICARUS aims t pwer an app that will give peple hurs t get t safety. Hwever, nt everyne is hpeful. Gelgist Wendy Bhn said that ICARUS is ding sme “cl things,” but she knws animal behavir is hard t pin dwn (证实). “My cat culd act crazily befre an earthquake,” she says. “But it als acts crazily if smebdy uses the can pener.”

Cnsumptin f ultra-prcessed fds (UPFs) has increased ver the past 20 years. UPFs cntain few r n whle fds, are industrially prduced, are ready-t-eat r ready-t-heat, and include additives. The ultra-prcessing f fd reduces its nutritinal value. It has been knwn that higher UPF cnsumptin is assciated with verweight and heart disease. Nw, research has been extended t examine its ptential cnsequences fr mental health.
In a new study, ver 72,000 participants wh were at least 55 years ld and didn’t have dementia (痴呆) at the start f the study were fllwed fr an average f 10 years, during which they filled ut questinnaires regarding their diet. At the end f the study, 518 peple were diagnsed (诊断) with dementia. After adjusting fr ther factrs that culd affect risk f dementia such as age, gender, and heart disease, researchers fund every 10 percent increase in daily intake f UPFs was assciated with a 25 percent higher risk f dementia. They als fund replacing 10 percent f UPFs with unprcessed r minimally prcessed fds was assciated with a 19 percent lwer risk f dementia.
In anther study, researchers fund individuals wh cnsumed the mst UPFs had significant increases in the symptms (症状) f mild depressin, “mentally unhealthy days”, and “anxius days”. Eric Hecht, Funder and Executive Directr f the Institute f Etilgical Research, said, “Mre than 70 percent f packaged fds in the US are classified as UPFs and represent abut 60 percent f all calries cnsumed by Americans. Cnsidering the degree f expsure t and effects f UPF cnsumptin, this study has great significance in clinical practice and public health. It might help imprve future develpment f dietary guidelines.”
Facing such alarming data, maybe it’s time fr Americans t recnsider their fd chices. Researchers recmmend taxes n UPFs and carrying ut plicies t reduce the cnsumptin. They als supprt prgrams and plicies t increase the availability and affrdability f whle fds, especially amng disadvantaged ppulatins.
      12. What d we knw abut UPFs?
      A. They have n nutritinal value.
      B. They are cheap and mass-prduced.
      C. They are ready-made and instant fds.
      D. They serve as additins t ur daily diets.
      13. Hw des the authr develp Paragraph 2?
      A. By cntrasting the findings f tw related studies
      B. By presenting the research elements and cnclusins in rder
      C. By discussing the reasns behind the research’s final cnclusin
      D. By using real-life examples t illustrate a knwn scientific rule
      14. What d researchers suggest ding abut UPFs?
      A. Cllecting higher taxes n UPFs.
      B. Decreasing UPFs’ cnsumptin in diet.
      C. Fcusing n the nutrient cntent f fds.
      D. Increasing public awareness f whle fds.
      15. Which can be a suitable title fr the text?
      A. Public Health Respnse t UPFs
      B. Physical Disrders Linked t UPFs
      C. Rising Cnsumptin f UPFs in the US
      D. Negative Effects f UPFs n Mental Health
