New studies say these small bits may be bad fr human health, especially fr ur hearts and lungs. It’s nt easy t avid them cmpletely, but experts have given teens simple ways t tuch them less.
      What Are Micrplastics?
They cme frm big plastic things breaking dwn, like packaging, man-made clth and kitchen cutting bards. “These bits are everywhere arund us,” said Abby Langer, a dietitian. Because they are s small, peple take them in withut nticing when eating r breathing. This makes scientists mre and mre wrried.
      Fds With Mre Micrplastics
A new study shws sme fds have mre plastic-related chemicals. Fish pick up micrplastics frm dirty water. Prcessed fds (like canned r packaged snacks) als take in mre bits when being made — even fds with “rganic” labels aren’t ttally free f this.
      Practical Ways t Reduce Cntact
·Use less plastic: Chse glass bwls, steel tls r wden cutting bards instead f plastic nes.
·Dn’t heat plastic cntainers: Ht temperatures make plastic let ut mre micrplastics and ther harmful things faster.
·Stre fd better: Use glass cntainers instead f plastic wrap r ne-time plastic bags fr fd.
·Put in water filtering (过滤) tls: A gd filtering tl can get rid f mst micrplastics in drinking water.
·Eat fresher fd: Eating fewer prcessed fds helps lwer the risk f taking in micrplastics. Fresh fds dn’t tuch plastic as much when being made.

Later, n the way back, they gt caught in a traffic jam. The kids grew bred and impatient. Anna stepped in. She tld silly jkes like a caring big sister, making even the adults laugh. She als cut leftver candy bxes and turned them int cute paper animals and gave ne t each kid as a gift. The ther parents thanked her with bright smiles, and fr the first time in years, Sumi felt prud f her daughter.
Then ne afternn, Anna’s teacher called. “Anna’s grades are still arund 23rd,” she said gently, “but we added a questin t the last exam: ‘Wh’s yur favrite classmate, and why?’ Almst every student wrte Anna’s name. They say she’s kind, listens carefully when thers talk, and always helps peple in need. She’s a truly wnderful child.” Sumi’s eyes were filled with tears f jy. Jeans are usually dyed with indig (用靛蓝染料染色). But this dark purple-blue dyeing substance desn’t easily mix int water. Thus, strng chemicals are used t break it dwn int a liquid that can turn the clth blue. Each year, thusands f tns f these strng chemicals g int making jeans, already hurting the wrkers wh handle them, let alne the fact that sme f the chemicals can cause cancer. S Qvrtrup, a chemist, wanted t find a safer and greener way t make jeans blue.
Fr their new dyeing technique, the researchers chse t use indican (糖芥), a substance in plants that can help prduce natural indig dye and break dwn in water withut harmful chemicals. Their first idea was t mix indican with an enzyme that wuld change it t indig. It wrked— the clth turned blue within a few minutes.
But then the team als placed pieces f clth in indican alne and left them by the windw in their lab. And t their surprise, these “were als turning blue withut us ding anything,” Qvrtrup said. As their research went n, the team fund that sunlight culd react with the indican n the clth and turn it t indig. Then, the team placed mre clth in an indican-nly liquid under different light surces. “Over the next cuple f hurs, the clth will turn blue, prving that the light will catalyze the clr,” Qvrtrup added.
These methds are bth prmising. The enzyme-based methd cut ut the harmful impacts by mre than 90 percent, cmpared t nrmal jeans dyeing and the light-driven dyeing might cut the impacts by mre than 70 percent, the researchers said. Hwever, the light methd might take up less land than the enzyme methd, and if the researchers can cut ut electricity csts by dyeing with just sunlight, the light methd may prve even better fr the envirnment.
“I hpe these methds will have an impact even befre they reach factries. Simply learning abut mre sustainable ways t make jeans may make jean-wearers think abut where their clthes cme frm. If yu want t wear blue jeans, be aware that there are better ways t make them than are used right nw,” Qvrtrup said.
      8. What is the prblem with the traditinal way f dyeing jeans?
      A. Cvering high labr csts.B. Missing the mark in fashin.
      C. Harming jeans makers’ health.D. Struggling with mass prductin.
      9. What des “catalyze” in paragraph 3 mst prbably mean?
      A. hide.B. Develp.C. Remve.D. Match.
      10. What is the advantage f light-driven dyeing ver enzyme-based dyeing?
      A. Its space-saving capability.B. Its little side effect n clth.
      C. Its efficiency in energy use.D. Its independence frm electricity.
      11. What d Qvrtrup’s wrds in the last paragraph mainly imply?
      A. Imprving factry equipment helps.
      B. Using green dye changes everything.
      C. Develping new dyes requires attentin.
      D. Raising cnsumer awareness matters.
      D
Frm an airplane, cars crawling dwn the highway lk like ants. But actual ants — unlike cars — smehw manage t avid the stp-and-g traffic. Researchers are studying their cperative strategies t learn hw t prgram self-driving cars that dn’t jam up.
The free flw f traffic becmes unstable as the density(密度)f cars increases n a highway. At15 vehicles per mile per lane, ne driver applying his brake can cause a wave f cngestin(拥挤). “It’ s a kind f phase transitin(相变),” like water turning frm a liquid t a slid frm, says Katsuhir Nishinari, a mathematical physicist.
His previus research had shwn that ants can maintain their flw even at high densities. S what’s their secret? In a recent study, researchers fund that the ants travel in grups f three t twenty that mve at nearly cnstant speeds while keeping distances between ne anther — and they dn’t speed up t pass thers.
Human drivers at rush hur rarely fllw such rules. “We’ re maximizing the interests f individuals, which is why, at a given pint, yu start t have a traffic jam,” says study c-authr Nicla Pugn. But self-driving cars, if they ne day becme ppular, wuld share infrmatin with nearby cars t make gd use f traffic flw — perhaps, the researchers suggest, by priritizing(优先考虑)cnstant speeds r by nt passing thers n the rad.
Ants can d numerus things that self-driving can’t, Pinter Wllman pints ut. Ants can create a trail as wide as they like, unlike drivers stuck n highways. The insects d smetimes jam up when trapped in tunnels, but t keep things mving, “they’ll find a way t walk n the ceiling,” she says. Plus, ants dn’t crash; they can literally walk ver ne anther.
Tday’s drivers can learn at least ne thing frm ants, Nishinari says, “by leaving rm between their car and the ne ahead, drivers can absrb a wave f braking in dense traffic cnditins that wuld therwise be amplified(增强)int a traffic jam.”
      12. What enables ants t keep smth traffic flw even at high densities?
      A. Central cmmand system.B. Cperative grup interactin.
      C. Quick speeding-up ability.D. Advanced navigatin (导航) tls.
      13. Hw culd self-driving cars ptentially cpy ants’ traffic strategies?
      A. Rad expansin.B. Cmplete avidance f braking.
      C. Inter-vehicle data sharing netwrks.D. Priritizing tp speed achievement.
      14. In which aspect are ants different frm self-driving cars?
      A. Travelling in grups f 3 t 20.B. Traffic rule bservatin.
      C. Cmputer-cntrlled decisin making.D. Flexible navigatin and crash avidance.
      15. What wuld be the mst apprpriate title fr the text?
      A. The Psychlgy Behind Human Traffic Cngestin.
      B. Technical Barriers in Autnmus Vehicle Netwrks.
      C. Ants vs. Humans: Evlutinary Cmparisns.
      D. Ants’ Amazing Traffic Rules: A Guide fr Driverless Cars.
