Last year, my grandpa lent me The Mn is Dwn, an antiwar nvel by Jhn Steinbeck, after we talked abut cars in The Grapes f Wrath. This year, after listening t me talk cntinuusly abut ecnmics, he gt me a bk abut it.
My grandpa, ne f the smartest peple I knw, recgnized my interests and transferred his knwledge t me thrugh a bk. I think this is the greatest gift ne can receive. It’s why I lve receiving (and giving) bks as gifts.
Bks as gifts functin nt nly t transfer knwledge but als as a message: I see yu. A bk is wrth 100,000 wrds. Giving smene a bk tells them yu see and appreciate them fr wh they are. If yu’re stumped n what t get a friend r family member, think: D they remind yu f a favrite character? Wuld they like t learn smething new? Give them a bk that they will like, and it will be the best gift they receive.

It’s safe t assume that rapid change is here t stay. At the cre f this change is ambiguity: situatins where the available infrmatin is incmplete, cntradictry, r cnstantly shifting and clear answers are impssible. Frtunately, we have bilgical respnses t change. If understd, these can becme ur advantage.
Our first bilgical reactin t uncertainty is ften a stress respnse. In ambiguus situatins, the bdy’s first respnse typically isn’t creativity r prblem-slving — it’s survival, when ur nervus system activates the stress respnse, ften described as fight, flight, r freeze. Where bilgy pushes us tward threat, it’s advisable t see change as pssibility, replacing the cmplaint “farm equipment sales are lw” by an ptimistic questin “Hw might we help farmers grw their businesses?” That simple shift in language unlcks energy and creativity.
Creativity is easily blcked under stress. When yur brain is stressed, the prefrntal crtex — the part respnsible fr planning, ideatin, and innvatin—is taken ver by the limbic system, yur emtinal and survival center. That means fewer new ideas and reduced insight. What t d? Befre slving the prblem, step utside t find fresh views. Fr example, if redesigning a stre, g t a fun public space t bserve hw peple interact. This can break yur ld thinking patterns and lead t breakthrugh ideas.
Steps that are t big can paralyze us. When the risks are high r the path is unclear, the nervus system may enter an alarmed state. The result? We avid taking actin, nt because we dn’t care, but because the actin feels t uncertain, t risky. But remember: actin creates clarity, nt the ther way arund. Rather than waiting fr the perfect answer, try small, intentinal, lw-risk experiments t learn what wrks. Bear in mind that experiments are nt pilts. The gal is t learn, nt t prve.
In a wrld f cnstant change, learning t deal with ambiguity is crucial. By reframing challenges, seeking inspiratin, and experimenting, yu can turn uncertainty int a path fr grwth.
      8. What des the authr suggest peple d t deal with stress respnse?
      A. Avid asking questins.B. Cnsult medical prfessinals.
      C. Change the attitude twards change.D. attach imprtance t persnal safety.
      9. Hw can ging utside help ur creativity?
      A. By freeing us frm stress.B. By breaking ur fixed ways f thinking.
      C. By activating the limbic system f ur brain.D. By narrwing the range f pssible answers.
      10. What des the underlined wrd “paralyze” mean in paragraph 4?
      A. Discurage.B. Bre.C. Transfrm.D. Impress.
      11. What is the authr’s purpse in writing the text?
      A. T warn abut the risks f uncertainties.
      B. T explain bilgical respnses t stress.
      C. T advise n turning uncertainty int advantage.
      D. T cmpare different methds f prblem-slving.
      D
Msquit-brne diseases, including malaria and dengue, kill thusands f peple per year. In 2023 alne, malaria killed ver 500,000 peple in 83 cuntries. These illnesses are ften difficult t cntrl, and msquites have gtten better at resisting chemical pesticides that used t wrk.
Hwever, fighting nature with nature culd be ne slutin. Since msquites are drawn t flwers, a team f researchers created a new variety f the Metarhizium fungus that cpies a flwer’s sweet smell, which cmes frm a chemical called lngiflene in many types f flwers. The lab-grwn fungus in this study essentially uses the lngiflene t trick the msquites t their deaths and is described in a study recently published in the jurnal Nature Micrbilgy.
Once the fungus are put int a cntainer, the lngiflene chemicals are released instantly. They can be effective fr mnths because they als cme ut gradually and nt in ne initial burst. When attracted msquites apprach, they cntact the fungus and becme infected and die within a few days.
Crucially, this fungal trap is safe fr humans and specifically targets msquites. Using a natural alternative like this fungus may als make it difficult r impssible fr msquites t avid, as they have with chemical alternatives. “If msquites evlve t avid lngiflene, that culd mean they’ll stp respnding t flwers,” St. Leger, a study c-authr and entmlgist at the University f Maryland, explained. “But they need flwers as a fd surce t survive.”
The team f this study is currently planning n larger-scale utdr trials f the new msquit cntrl methd t submit fr regulatry apprval. “It’s nt as if yu’re ging t necessarily find a silver bullet t cntrl msquites everywhere, but we’re trying t develp a very diverse and flexible set f tls that peple in different parts f the wrld can use and chse frm,” St. Leger added.
      12. What is the first paragraph mainly abut?
      A. Irresistible glbal death rate.B. Develpment f chemical pesticides.
      C. Treatment f msquit-brne diseases.D. Dangerus and adaptable msquites.
      13. What can we learn abut the Metarhizium fungus?
      A. It exists in msquites.B. It smells like real flwers.
      C. It is shaped like msquites.D. It is easily accessible in the wild.
      14. What makes the fungal trap difficult fr msquites t avid?
      A. Their natural desire fr fd.B. Their underdevelped senses.
      C. Their resistance t lngiflene.D. Their preference fr bright clrs.
      15. What will the team f this study d next?
      A. Raise fund fr the research.B. Cnduct brader experiments.
      C. Predict the evlutin f msquites.D. Integrate chemical pesticides int the fungal trap.

Lily and I have been best friends since primary schl. We shared everything — snacks, secrets, and even dreams f jining the schl’s drama club tgether. But things changed when the drama club annunced auditrs fr the lead rle in The Little Prince.
I’ve always lved acting — ever since I played a tiny rabbit in a primary schl play, I’d dreamed f standing center stage with all eyes n me. This lead rle, with its gentle lines abut friendship and curage, felt like it was made just fr me. Lily said she wanted t try ut, t, but I culd see hesitatin flicker in her eyes — she’s always been shy, her vice sftening t a whisper when she has t speak in frnt f mre than a few peple. “We’ll practice tgether every afternn,” I prmised, thugh a small, selfish part f me hped I’d stand ut mre, that the rle wuld be mine.
The next tw weeks were busy. We rehearsed lines every afternn, but I nticed Lily was getting better — her vice grew clearer, and her expressins mre natural. On the day befre auditins, she accidentally saw my ntebk full f extra practice ntes. Her smile faded, and she said quietly, “Yu must really want this.” I didn’t knw hw t reply.
Auditin day arrived. I went first and gave it my all, but my hands were shaking the whle time. When Lily walked n stage, smething amazing happened. She didn’t lk shy at all — she was cnfident, even shining. When she finished, the judges ndded apprvingly. I felt a mix f pride and wrry in my chest.
That evening, the sky turned pink as the drama teacher taped the auditin results t the nticebard. Students crwded arund at first, but sn left, chatting abut wh’d gtten what. I hung back, watching Lily kick at a pebble n the grund, and wndered if we’d still be as clse if nly ne f us made it.
