It’s unusual t read nvels abut wmen taking an active rle in the resistance during Wrld War Ⅱ, especially thse f Dutch wmen, wh were expected t keep the hme fires burning and let the men get n with the fighting. S, I was intrigued when discvering many Dutch female fighters wh risked their lives fr their cuntry in wartime.
My bk, The Girl with the Red Hair, is based n the true stry f Hannie Schaft, the mst famus f thse brave wmen. T the Dutch, Hannie was an icn f resistance during Wrld War Ⅱ, and arund the cuntry there are schls and streets named after her.
At the start f the war, Hannie was a law student at the University f Amsterdam, but her studies were disrupted by the German ccupatin f the Netherlands. On May 14th, 1940, a German bmbing raid almst destryed Rtterdam, frcing thusands t flee the burning city. As the Nazis began targeting Jews, Hannie decided t act. Whether it was sheltering Jews r transprting tp-secret infrmatin in her saddlebags, setting fire t military facilities r shting Nazi fficers, the breathtaking curage she demnstrated was unprecedented. Hannie was prepared t take n any assignment in her quest fr justice.
Hannie’s stry ends tragically. It was Hannie’s great misfrtune t be arrested nly weeks befre the end f the war. Thugh this black-haired girl refused t talk under questining, her red hair rts gave her identity away. One cld spring mrning, Hannie was taken frm her cell and marched t a pint, where ne f the Nazi sldiers tk aim. But his first sht nly grazed her ear. She said, “Idit! I sht better than yu.” The secnd bullet tk her life.
It has been a humbling experience writing this bk abut Hannie Schaft. Althugh my bk is a wrk f fictin, I hpe I’ve dne justice t this incredible and inspiring wman. Cme and discver mre abut my new nvel, the secnd in The Dutch Girl series, called The Girl with the Red Hair.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been in the news a lt lately. And accrding t a recent reprt frm the McKinsey Glbal Institute, rughly half f tday’s wrk activities culd be autmated (自动的) by 2055. Culd “teaching” be n that list?
Cmputers are capable f levels f calculatins we culd nly dream f achieving with ur minds alne. But when a human teacher can cnnect t a student by having “been there”, thrugh heartfelt listening, they can inspire their students t learn, create, and excel. Even AI with advanced technlgy can’t d this.
S, chances are gd that yur jb is safe fr the near future. But it is ging t change, and AI is ging t be a part f educatin. Hpefully, rbts will be jining us quite sn... as teaching assistants.
Recently, a Gergia Tech prfessr built an AI teaching assistant fr his classrm, which allwed him t mre effectively manage ver 400 students all ver the wrld. His AI tends t answer mre rutine questins, freeing him t d ther imprtant tasks.
A variety f rbts are als being used in Suth Krea and Japan as a resurce t supplement (补充) language learning. Students can g thrugh any variety f cnversatinal practices, and the AI can mnitr mistakes in usage and prnunciatin. In fact, research shws that these prgrams can help reslve (解决) issues like shyness, cnfidence, and frustratin that can arise when practicing repetitively with a teacher: A rbt will nt get tired, n matter hw many mistakes a child makes.
Surprisingly, the West is much mre hesitant (犹豫不决) abut embracing the integratin (融合,整合) f rbts and AI in ur classrms, but the tides are quickly turning. Shuld yu start packing up yur desk? Abslutely nt. The bttm line is that these technlgies wrk best when paired with an active human teacher. But it certainly culd make yur jb easier and mre efficient. In the future, Rbts will be teachers’ gd friends.
      8. The authr’s attitude twards human teachers’ future can be described as
      A. wrriedB. ptimisticC. dubtfulD. cnfused
      9. What des the authr want t shw by giving the example f Gergia Tech prfessr?
      A. AI will cntrl future teaching.B. AI will make n big difference.
      C. AI will d mre difficult jbs.D. AI will greatly help teachers.
      10. In what way des a rbt d better than a human teacher?
      A. Being patient.B. Being creative.
      C. The ability t inspire.D. The ability t cmmunicate.
      11. What is the authr’s final cnclusin abut future teaching?
      A. Rbts will play a leading rle.B. Teachers will be replaced by rbts.
      C. Rbts will be teachers’ gd friends.D. Teachers will teach withut leaving hme.
      D
When we think abut high schl’s lasting impact, we ften fcus n grade pint averages, extracurricular activities, and clse friendships. But accrding t a new study, the influence f high schl stretches far beynd the teenage years and int ur very bdies.
The study tracked a natinally representative sample f individuals wh were high schl sphmres (二年级的) and senirs in 1980. Researchers fllwed these participants int their early 50s and fund strng links between high schl experience and midlife bdy mass index (BMI). This relatinship held even when accunting fr cllege educatin, academic attainment, and weight during high schl itself.
This research argues that high schls are mre than institutins f learning — they are health shapers. Fr decades, we’ve knwn that educatinal attainment is linked t health utcmes, including weight. But this study pushes the timeline back, suggesting that the prcess f becming educated — especially the early stages that happen in high schl — is just as crucial.
S, what parts f high schl matter? It turns ut that attending private schls, being in high sciecnmic status (High-SES) envirnments, and enrlling in advanced curricular tracks were assciated with lwer midlife BMI, especially fr wmen. These factrs weren’t just minr cntributrs; they maintained their influence even after researchers cntrlled fr a hst f variables like cllege degrees and adult incme.
Interestingly, ppularity during high schl als played a rle fr wmen. In a sciety where wmen and girls face heightened pressure arund bdy image, early scial acceptance may help establish healthier lng-term habits and bdy ideals.
The gender differences in this study are striking. Fr wmen, bth family and schl SES, alng with ppularity, were significantly linked t adult weight. Fr men, the cnnectin existed but was less prnunced. One pssible reasn? The cultural landscape. Girls and wmen ften deal with mre pressure t be thin and face harsher judgment abut their weight than bys and men. These pressures likely strengthen hw high schl experiences — bth academic and scial — shape lng-term behavirs and self-perceptins.
      12. What des the study mainly reveal abut high schls?
      A. They predict academic success.B. They fster scial relatinships.
      C. They determine career achievements.D. They shape lng- term physical health.
      13. Which factr relates t lwer adult BMI fr wmen?
      A. Adult incme status.B. High schl ppularity.
      C. Cllege degree level.D. High schl sprts activities.
      14. Why d gender differences exist in findings?
      A. Scial expectatins.B. Ecnmic plicies.
      C. Educatinal resurces.D. Bilgical distinctins.
      15. What can be a suitable title fr the text?
      A. Gender Differences in Educatinal Envirnments
      B. The Link Between Schl Grades and Adult Success
      C. High Schl’s Lng- Term Impact n Physical Health
      D. The Rle f Scial Activities in adlescent Develpment

Fr decades, scientists have been seeking sustainable slutins t glbal fd shrtages.____16____. Cmmnly knwn as cultured meat, this innvatin grws animal muscle tissue frm stem cells in cntrlled labratry envirnments. Its emergence culd revlutinize ur traditinal understanding f meat prductin.
      Animal-Free Meat Creatin via Science
The manufacturing prcess begins with cllecting animal cells thrugh harmless bipsies. (活组织检查) ____17____. They are then placed in nutrient-rich bireactrs where they multiply and develp int muscle fibers. Surprisingly, the final prduct maintains the same prtein cntent and texture as cnventinal meat thrugh precise temperature cntrl and mechanical stretching.
      Envirnmental Impacts
Cmpared t traditinal livestck (牲畜) farming, lab-grwn meat shws remarkable eclgical advantages. ____18____. A 2024 UN reprt revealed that cultured meat prductin requires 95% less land and reduces greenhuse gas emissins by 87%. Mrever, it cmpletely remves the need fr antibitics (抗生素) used in raising animals, addressing grwing cncerns abut drug-resistant bacteria.
      ____19____
Despite its prmise, the industry faces significant challenges. Current prductin csts remain way t high, with a single burger patty csting apprximately $50 t prduce. Cnsumer acceptance als presents bstacles (阻碍), as 42% f participants in a glbal survey expressed distrust in “test-tube meat”. Additinally, regulatry framewrks fr safety standards and labeling requirements are still under develpment wrldwide.
      Future Outlk
Majr fd crpratins have invested ver $3 billin in cultured meat research since 2022. ____20____. With Singapre already apprving cmmercial sales and the EU planning t legalize it by 2026, industry analysts predict cultured meat culd capture 10% f the glbal meat market by 2035. As technlgy advances, this scientific breakthrugh may fundamentally transfrm ur dining tables and ecsystems alike.
      A. Rising Prductin Csts
      B. Challenges t Mass Prductin
      C. It cnsumes 85% less water than regular farms
      D. The mst prmising answer lies in lab-grwn meat
      E. These cells are carefully selected fr their grwth ptential
      F. Gvernments shuld prmte this ec-friendly alternative
      G. The huge increase in funding reflects grwing cnfidence in it

This year culd see three cmmercial reactrs ____26____. There are plans t shut dwn abut 20 mre ver the cming years.
The prblem is a misunderstanding f ____27____. Humans are cnstantly expsed t radiatin — frm the sun, frm the universe, frm the very grund we walk n. The alarming near-meltdwn at Pennsylvania’s Three Mile Island plant in 1979 ____28____ expsed neighbrs t abut ne-sixth the radiatin dse they wuld receive frm having a single X-ray.
Micrsft c-funder Bill Gates is ne f a grwing number f ____29____ wh believe that cheaper, smaller reactrs must play a significant part in the pst-carbn energy mix. His cmpany Terra Pwer has annunced plans t build a next-generatin nuclear reactr at the site f a frmer cal-fired pwer plant in Wyming. The gal is t prve that nuclear pwer can be ____30____ t the grid (输电网) at a cmpetitive price and n a reasnable timeline.
I’m an ptimistic supprter f renewable energy surces. I’m als a (n) ____31____ student f the varius impediments (阻碍) t the grwth f these surces. I agree with Gates that the surest path t net-zer carbn emissins is ne that ____32____ every nn-carbn energy surce, including nuclear pwer. The mdel t have in mind is nt the hulking plant like Chernbyl. Instead, let’s cnsider the small, reliable reactrs that have ____33____ the United States’ submarines and aircraft carriers. In 50-plus years f cruising, they have had n ____34____.
Carbn emissins and ther greenhuse gases are the envirnmental challenge f ur age. Nuclear pwer is ne tl fr ____35____ urselves f them — while keeping the lights n.
