Animal-like rbts are ppular. And yet, says Barbara Mazzlai, an Italian rbticist, the field f rbtics is far less interested in explring the ther majr categry f living things — plants. She puts the unwillingness dwn t a miscnceptin(误解)abut the usefulness f plant behavir: that they are capable f neither mtin nr perceptin(感知). “It’s nt true at all,” she says.
Dr. Mazzlai and her team recently created FilBt, a rbt based n climbing plants. Like the real thing. FilBt is capable f grwing, attaching t and wrapping itself arund supprts, and adapting itself t an envirnment in respnse t external stimuli.
FilBt imitates the behavirs f a climbing tree using sensrs in its head which is als equipped with a layer f plastic and a heating element. By sftening and extruding (挤压出) the plastic in a circular patter, it can 3D-print its wn bdy at a rate f tw t seven millimeters per minute. Depending n brightness and directin, it changes the heat that the plastic is expsed t — lwer temperatures result in a lighter bdy that increases in size mre quickly, while higher temperatures make it thicker and strnger and grw mre slwly.
The researchers fund that these simple functinalities were enugh t let FilBt mve thrugh a cmplex and unseen envirnment, crss gaps and find things t attach t. The lack f heavy n-bard cmputing hardware, they say, means that it mves easily and requires minimal mnitring, while its slw pace means that it desn’t disturb things arund it. They suppse that this makes it suitable fr ptential applicatins including envirnmental mnitring in hard-t-reach lcatins, r mnitring disaster sites where existing facilities is unstable.
Dr. Mazzlai hpes that such prjects will mtivate ther rbticists t draw inspiratin frm plants. The plant kingdm is a wrld, she says, with a cmpletely different apprach t the animal ne. “And we can develp new technlgies and artificial slutins, because it is s different.”
What leads t limited explratin f plant-like rbts?
A.The slw grwth rate f plants.B.The lack f plant research capability.
      C.The misunderstanding f plant behavir.D.The difficulty f applying plant-like rbts.
      Hw des FilBt grw?
      A.By pressing a mtin sensr.B.By expsing itself t sunlight.
C.By pushing ut sftened plastic.D.By cntrlling utside temperature.
What is the purpse f this text?
A.T pint ut the value f rbtics.B.T present a newly invented rbt.
C.T call fr mre research int rbts.D.T crrect a miscnceptin abut plants.

Time magazine has chsen its 2024 Kid f the Year — and it’s Heman Bekele, a teenager wh culd change the way skin cancer is treated.
As a student frm Fairfax’s Wdsn High Schl, Bekele divides his time between the classrm and the lab at Jhns Hpkins University, where he’s inventing a sap that culd ne day treat the deadly disease. “I was raised under the thught that I culd always ask questins, and be as curius as pssible,” Bekele said. “ And this pushed me t the field f science.” Sme f Bekele’s earliest memries were seeing farmers wrk under the terrible heat with n heat prtectin frm the sun’s UV rays in Ethipia, where he was brn. This was ne factr that made him tackle skin cancer after he mved t the US.
At hme, Bekele — wh’d entertain himself fr hurs as a child by mixing tgether any husehld prducts he culd get his hands n and seeing what wuld happen — began wndering hw he culd help. “ What’s ne thing that is an internatinally impactful idea, smething everyne can use, regardless f sciecnmic class?” Bekele asked himself. “Almst everyne uses sap and water fr cleaning. S sap wuld prbably be the best ptin.” S Bekele began his deliberate trial-and-errr prcess, which led him t learn abut a cream- based skin cancer treatment called Imiquimd that did prduce desired results — but can cst as much as $180 fr the uninsured in America. Inspired by the cream, Bekele designed his affrdable sap.
Bekele knew he’d need an actual lab t refine his creatin. Bekele applied t — and wn— the Minnesta- based tech cmpany 3M’s Yung Scientist Challenge in 2023, securing$25,000 and the title f “America’s Tp Yung Scientist”. Nw, with the help f Jhns Hpkins’ prfessr and bilgist Vit Rebecca, Bekele has been testing the sap n mice at the university’s lab fr almst half a year. The sap still has a lng way t g: Testing, patenting it and getting FDA certificatin culd take a decade. But even then, Bekele will nly be 25 years ld.
What initially inspired Bekele t cme up with his idea t cure skin cancer?
A.The farmers’expsure t the ht sun.B.His jurney frm the classrm t the lab.
C.The deadly disease he nce suffered frm.D.His being named Time’s Kid f the Year.
What d we knw abut Imiquimd?
A.It was invented by Bekele.B.Bekele prved its side effects.
C.It is effective but expensive.D.Bekele prduced it fr his sap.
Why did Bekele participate in the Yung Scientist Challenge?
A.T meet Prfessr Vit Rebecca.B.T get supprt t better his sap.
C.T gain the sap patent frm 3M.D.T prmte ready- made prducts.
What can we learn frm Bekele’s stry?
A.Thinking and actin mean ptential success.B.Success will get persnal desires satisfied.
C.Being famus is a great thirst f the yung.D.Geniuses tend t get things dne creatively.

A system that helps visually impaired(视觉受损的)peple t navigate their surrundings using cameras, earphnes and artificial intelligence(AI) culd ffer advantages ver cnventinal sticks fr peple living in large cities. Cameras have a higher range than a stick, which can typically detect bstacles(障碍物)that are arund ne metre in frnt f the persn.
The system features a pair f glasses equipped with a camera that captures live images f the wearer’s surrundings. A tiny cmputer prcesses these images t detect the presence f ther peple and bjects such as drs, walls and furniture. The device gives the user audi cues abut their surrundings every 250 millisecnds, prducing a sund in either the right r left earphne t guide them in the right directin. The researchers als created flexible “artificial skin” layers that users wear n their wrists and fingers, fr additinal navigatinal assistance. The bands are equipped with their wn camera system and the layers vibrate(震动)t warn the wearer when an bstacle is between 40 centimetres and 50 centimetres away.
The researchers first wrked with 12 participants with visual impairments t evaluate hw well the system culd help them t avid bstacles when walking thrugh rms. After training with the system, all participants were able t navigate indrs. In anther trial, the technlgy cntinued t perfrm well when eight participants tested the device in real-wrld situatins - including walking n a city street and thrugh a cnference rm with furniture.
The apprach is unique in cmbining audi and tuch feedback t keep users aware f what is arund them, says Eduard Fernández Jver, a medical dctr at Miguel Hernández University.
“It’s a prf f cncept. They still need t prve it in a higher number f subjects as well as peple f different ages. The authrs nw plan t adjust the design f the device t make it lighter and tinier. Then it’s mre invisible, s peple will feel cmfrtable t use it.” says study c-authr Leilei Gu, an AI researcher at Shanghai Jia Tng University in China.
Why might the new system be better fr the blind?
A.It replaces the need fr a walking stick.B.It can detect things farther than a stick.
C.It has been invisible and cmfrtable t use.D.It has mre cameras than ther smart devices.
What is paragraph 2 mainly abut?
A.Hw the system functins.B.Hw audi cues are used.
C.Hw the system detects bstacles.D.Hw artificial skin layers are created.
What makes this navigatin system special?
A.It uses bth hearing and tuch feedback.B.It needs n training t wrk well.
C.It can be applied t peple f different ages.D.It can be used in any real-wrld situatin.
Which f the fllwing is the best title fr the text?

Is text-messaging driving us apart? These days, we talk t each ther a lt with ur thumbs — sending six billin text messages a day, and likely a few billin mre n services like Whats App.
But sme wrry that s much messaging leads t less cmmunicatin. Fr instance, when hanging ut with friends, we’d be texting secretively at the same time, pretending t maintain eye cntact but mentally smewhere else.
New technlgies ften upset the way we relate t ne anther, f curse. But such divisin caused by texting have a strng ech in the arguments we had ver telephne a hundred years ag. The small device gave us a new way t cntact ne anther and quickly prmte new frms f scializing. Callers arranged regular “visiting” calls, dialing remte family t catch up n news.
Sn, thugh, scial critics thught it wuld be s easy t talk that we’d never leave each ther alne. Others wrried that the telephne sped up life, demanding instant reactins. The use f the telephne gave little rm fr reflectin. It prduced a craziness in the rdinary cncerns f life which didn’t make fr dmestic happiness. “We shall sn be nthing but transparent piles f jelly(果冻)t each ther,” a Lndn writer maned in 1897.
Hwever, nwadays the telephne call seems like a thrwback t a gentler era. When Jenna Birch, a cmmunicatin prfessr at the University f Iwa, started dating a man wh insisted n calling her n the phne, she fund it warm and delightful. S she desn’t think the shift t texting has degraded ur interactins. Accrding t her study, teenagers wh text the mst are als thse wh spend the mst time face t face with friends. Cmmunicatin, it seems, brings mre cmmunicatin, and — as she argues — just because talk happens in text desn’t mean it’s nt meaningful.
Michéle Martin f Carletn University, thinks we’re living thrugh a replay f the telephne, where the things that made it valuable — instant cmmunicatins — are the same that made it annying. “Peple believe they are liberated because they can bring the mbile phne everywhere,” Martin says. “But at the same time, they are slaves t it.”
What’s the functin f the first paragraph?
      A.T intrduce the tpic.B.T describe a scene.C.T ffer an argument.D.T issue a warning.
Accrding t paragraph 4, what des telephne use cause?
A.Peple experience very tight schedule.B.Peple tend t lack individuality.
C.Peple becme narrw and uninfrmed.D.Peple lse the ability t reflect.
What can we learn frm paragraph 5?
A.Telephne calls are particularly welcmed in dating.B.Teenagers are addicted t cmmunicating by texting.
C.The shift t texting is destructive t face-t-face time.D.The meaning f cmmunicatin ges beynd medium.
What’s the best title fr the text?
A.Oh My Gd! We’ve Been Here Befre!B.Gne with the Wind, Dear Texting!
      C.Life is T Shrt fr S Many TextingD.Oh, Telephne, a Tale f Tw Sides

The Daily Habits f Effective Leaders
Leadership is ften perceived as a gift with birth. 36 Life cach Allisn Task highlights that by adpting specific daily habits and mental shifts, anyne can learn t step int a rle f greater influence and respnsibility.
Everyne has access t the same infrmatin; the difference lies in hw it’s used. 37 Leaders identify pprtunities in situatins and help thers d the same. Crucially, yu dn’t need t be brn with this skill, instead it can be built by fcusing n pprtunities, especially in tugh times.
Allisn Task nce wrked at EarthWeb, where CEO Jack Hidary (a frmer NYC mayr candidate) ften said, “ 38 ” He wuld explain market ideas, then wait fr team members t rephrase the visin in their wn wrds — ensuring everyne felt invested in the gal. While this cmmunicatin takes time, it avids the bigger truble f leading alne while the team members wander ff in different directins.
Task nce greeted a therapist wh has an ffice in her building. He respnded, “Crazy, like usual,” and hurried ff. He’s talking abut being crazy. 39 If he can’t d that in his wn life, hw can he help peple live theirs? Leaders are cnstant rle mdels. Their behavir — frm hw they treat thers t their persnal habits regarding sleep, diet, and exercise — is cntinuusly bserved and subcnsciusly fllwed by their team.
In cnclusin, the jurney t becming an effective leader is accessible t all. It begins with cultivating a mindset that seeks pprtunity in adversity, ensures shared understanding thrugh deliberate cmmunicatin, and leads by example in bth prfessinal and persnal cnduct. 40
A.It isn’t said until everyne says it.
B.Isn’t a therapist’s gal t help peple be less crazy?
C.Real leaders dn’t get trapped in the wrmhle f scial media.
D.It is a cllectin f skills that can be intentinally develped, thugh.
E.On a rainy day, ne can cmplain r seize the chance t sell umbrellas.
F.By integrating these habits, individuals can step int rewarding leadership rles.
G.It’s easy t believe that leaders are brave and cnfident enugh t take bld risks.

That same year, -- 61 was later recrded as a miracle year in science, he published fur extrardinary physics papers. Fllwing this, he -- 62 (gradual) became famus thrughut the wrld as the new Isaac Newtn. After fur years, he was able t quit his jb at the patent ffice and enter research full-time at a university.
