We were slving simple tasks like hw t push a rbt ff a platfrm. Learning frm my partners as well as nline articles abut hw t prgram and build was really interesting t me,” said Herbst.
Later that year, she received a letter frm her pen pal, Ruth, wh lived in Ethipia, and learned that she was living in energy pverty with minimal access t electricity and medical supplies. “I knew that I wanted t d smething t help, s I created BEACON.” she said.
The device is made frm 90% recycled materials easily fund thrughut the wrld, including 2-liter bttles and recycled spns. It csts $12 t make and can prduce enugh electricity t pwer an LED light. Researchers have bserved Flrida carpenter ants biting ff the injured legs f their cmpanins.
These surgeries are the first knwn example f nn-human animals perfrming amputatins(截肢) t imprve a fellw animal’s chances f recvering, the researchers say. “Nt nly can they d this, but they are even able t check the wunds and, depending n the lcatin, adapt the treatment accrdingly,” says Erik Frank, an ant researcher. The ants are territrial (有领土意识的) and might sustain injuries while defending their hmes. S, the researchers wndered if the species had methds fr dealing with infected wunds.
They discvered that when a wrker ant injured its leg’s upper part, cmpanins wuld perfrm amputatins. These ther ants wuld then spend abut six minutes n average biting at the upper part until it came ff. “I find it striking t what extent they take cncerted (同心协力的) actin in this amputatin event,” Frank says. “Yu can see it presenting the injured leg, and the ther ant, fr many minutes at a time, is biting it vilently and the injured ant desn’t seem t cmplain.”
The researchers wndered if the amputatins culd serve t prevent infectins. T test this, they wunded sme ants’ legs. They islated(隔离) sme, ensuring they wuld receive n care, perfrmed their wn amputatins n thers and returned a third grup t the clny. The experiments shwed ants with upper-leg injuries that were islated died abut 60% f the time, while ants that received surgeries, either frm the researchers r frm fellw ants, almst always lived. The experiments als cnfirmed the ants didn’t perfrm amputatins fr thse with lwer-leg injuries. But the thers wuld lick (舔舐) the wunds. They had an apprximately 75% survival rate, cmpared t a 15% survival rate fr islated ants with lwer-leg injuries.
Flrida carpenter ants have muscles respnsible fr bld circulatin in their upper legs, s upper-leg injuries culd reduce circulatin. Lwer circulatin wuld, in turn, reduce the spread f infectin, buying the ants time t perfrm amputatins. The researchers fund amputatins fr lwer-leg wunds nly imprved survival chances if they were perfrmed immediately. The ants dn’t perfrm blanket amputatin n any injury-they nly d s when it’d make sense.

A. Different rles ants play in it.B. Actins each ant makes fr it.
C. The varius death rates it causes.D. The experiments abut its functin.

Shppers in the UK are spending less mney n tilet paper t save mney, the research has shwn.
Penny-pinching UK cnsumers chse cheaper prducts frm discunters such as Aldi and Lidl rather than luxury alternatives.
This has wiped 6% ff the value f the sft tissue paper market in the UK. It has shrunk frm £1.19 billin in 2021 t £1.12 billin in 2023, accrding t a new reprt frm the market research cmpany Mintel. Overall, almst three in five peple say they try t limit their usage f paper — including facial tissue and kitchen rll — t save mney. “Strength, sftness and thickness remain the leading indicatrs f tilet paper quality” said Mintel analyst Jack Duckett. “Extra features like flwers and perfume smells are deemed unnecessary by the majrity f shppers, which prbably reflects hw these types f prducts are typically mre expensive than regular tilet paper, even when n special ffer.”
While cnsumers are spending less n tilet paper, they remain fastidius — in thery at least — when it cmes t paper quality. Tp f Britns’ tilet paper wish list is sftness (57%) fllwed by strength (45%) and thickness (36%).
One in ten buyers rank tilet rlls made frm recycled paper amng their tp cnsideratins, highlighting that the envirnment is much less f a cnsideratin fr shppers than prduct quality. In a challenge fr manufacturers, 81% f paper prduct users said they wuld cnsider buying recycled tilet tissue if it were cmparable in quality t standard paper.
32. What will the develpment trend f the tissue paper market lk like in the future?
A. It will remain depressing.B. It will expand in time.
C. It will be unpredictable.D. It will recver as ppulatin grws.
33. What des Jack Duckett think abut tilet paper?
A. Cnsumers are lyal t certain brands.
B. Special ffers wuld prmte its sales.
C. Luxurius features add much t the price.
D. Cnsumers are mre likely t chse tilet paper f better quality.
34. Which f the wrds belw can best explain the underlined wrd in the sixth paragraph?
A. casualB. pickyC. uncertainD. mean
