With the back-t-schl seasn nearing, my thughts return t my educatinal jurney at Greenville Senir High Academy (GSHA).
In 2008, I was called “gifted (有天赋的)” after a few runds f tests and received an acceptance letter frm GSHA. This new situatin gave me the heebie-jeebies — leaving behind familiar faces t g int a wrld where strangers came frm every crner f the Greenville area was a lt t deal with. As I stepped int the new hallways, I had n idea f the great impact (影响) this change wuld have n my life.
My time at GSHA marked an imprtant perid that remains a highlight f my yung life. Dance became an unexpected great lve fr me. Ballet and mdern dance classes every ther day helped me create sme f the best memries I have f that time. Our dance teacher Ms. Smith reminded us f Debbie Allen and when I was in the dancing rm I felt like we were dancing stars. Our dance perfrmances were unfrgettable — frm the stage (舞台), it was fun t see the hall cmpletely filled.
Beynd (除……之外) artistic parts, what hangs arund mst in my memry are the relatinships that were created. I had classmates frm different backgrunds, each ne f them increasing my knwledge in ways that bks culd nt. Lking back, it’s clear that educatin is nt nly abut textbks. It includes the peple wh guide us, the friendships that shape us, and the experiences that frm us int different individuals (个人).

Frmer British Prime Minister Winstn Churchill nce said that the British are the nly peple wh like t be tld hw bad things are. This is true f British cmedy. Mst peple think humr is abut happy things, but fr the British, the ppsite is true. We lve t use ur sense f humr t cmplain and be negative.
British cmedy, fr example, draws a fine line between cmedy and tragedy. The Office is a TV shw, famus fr its dry humr. The main character, David Brent, is a flish man, and the shw’s cmedy cmes frm his delusins. Fr example, he ften tells himself that he is lved by everyne but the viewers can see that everyne hates him.
Stupid characters fr the audience t laugh at are an ld traditin in Britain. In Shakespeare’s play Twelfth Night, the character Malvli is an ld man whm peple play tricks n. The audience will laugh away, althugh the reality is that this man is a truly tragic individual (个人).
This side f British humr is reflected in friendships as well. At university, my friends and I wuld always laugh at ne anther. I had an American friend wh actually fund this sarcasm (挖苦) quite upsetting. She didn’t realize that in Britain, the better friends yu are with smene, the mre yu laugh at him r her. This way — laughing at everything — may sund rather depressing, but ur strange humr played a big part in British histry. In the Secnd Wrld War, alng with a stiff upper lip, the British gt thrugh it by laughing. What else was there t d?
There is a saying in English: “Laugh, and the wrld laughs with yu; weep, and yu weep alne.” If yu are ever n the receiving end f British sarcasm, yu may feel like crying, but it’s best t just laugh it ff!
      8. Hw is British humr different frm thers?
      A. It ften cncerns human nature.
      B. It is ften surprising and negative.
      C. It is ften abut the bad things in life.
      D. It ften makes peple feel at a lss.
      9. What des the underlined wrd “delusins” in paragraph 2 mean?
      A. Strng abilities.B. Kind gestures.C. Deep dubts.D. False ideas.
      10. Why is Shakespeare’s play Twelfth Night mentined?
      A. T shw ne f the best examples f British cmedy.
      B. T praise Shakespeare fr his representative wrks.
      C. T prve Britain’s traditin f laughing at stupid characters.
      D. T stress the difficulty f getting peple t accept British cmedy.
      11. Hw shuld peple react t British sarcasm accrding t the authr?
      A. Learn frm it.
      B. Dn’t take it seriusly.
      C. Frget abut the upsetting things.
      D. Be careful nt t make stupid mistakes.
      D
Britain's gt talent——but we're still wasting it. That's the main finding f a new reprt by researchers frm Oxfrd University. Children f similar cgnitive (认知) ability have very different chances f educatinal success; it still depends n their parents' ecnmic, sci-cultural and educatinal resurces. This cntradicts a cmmnly held view that ur educatin system has develped enugh t give everyne a fighting chance. Individuals with high levels f cgnitive ability but with disadvantages in their scial rigins are unable t translate their ability int educatinal achievement t the same extent as their mre advantaged cunterparts (对照组). The research, funded by the Nuffield Fundatin, fund that nly abut half f the difference in educatinal achievement between children frm advantaged and disadvantaged parental backgrunds is due t differences in their cgnitive ability. The ther half is due t ther factrs (因素)assciated with their backgrunds.
“If we cmpare the educatinal achievement f children brn in the 1990s t thse in the late 1950s and early 1970s, we see that parents' ecnmic resurces have becme a less imprtant factr, but their sci-cultural and educatinal resurces have grwn in significance," says Dr. Bukdi. “That means that yur parents' place in sciety and their wn level f educatin still play a big part in hw well yu may d."
These experts are nw calling fr plicy-makers t acknwledge that frmal qualificatins is nly ne channel fr upward mbility (流动性)fr high-ability individuals f disadvantaged backgrunds. Dr. Bukdi says, “These findings shw that there are limits t hw far inequalities f pprtunity can be reduced thrugh educatinal plicy alne. Changes in educatinal plicy aren't having the pwerful effect we want."
      12. What is the main finding f the research?
      A. We're wasting talent due t educatin system.
      B. Children f similar cgnitive ability have different chances f educatinal success.
      C. Children's cgnitive ability depends n different educatinal resurces.
      D. Educatin system has develped enugh t give children a fighting chance.
      13. Hw des the authr mainly develp the text?
      A. By making a cmparisn.
      B. By discussing a result.
      C. By giving examples.
      D. By presenting reasns.
      14. Accrding t Dr. Bukdi, what affects children's educatinal achievement greatly?
      A. Children's cgnitive ability.
      B. Parents' ecnmic resurces.
      C. Educatinal plicy.
      D. Parents' sci-cultural and educatinal backgrunds.
      15. What is the authr's attitude twards the finding f the new reprt?
      A. Favrable.B. Objective.
      C. Dubtful.D. Negative.
