      One f my earliest memries is f my father sitting me dwn at ur kitchen table with canvases, paints, and brushes. He taught me hw t blend clrs and use different materials. Whenever we felt inspired, we set ut all ur materials and painted what ur hearts desired.
      My father grew up in a small village in the Dminican Republic. Despite nt having many materials available, he created art with whatever he had. My father saved his mney t buy paints and clred pencils t draw n the walls arund his hme. When he was 15, he arrived in America alne and stayed with his aunt in Flrida fr a while befre finishing high schl in New Yrk with anther aunt. He studied very hard. Eventually, my father was able t btain his citizenship.
      As I gt lder, he cntinued t give me lessns, teaching me different brush strkes and hw t take care f my art supplies. He taught me t find beauty in everything and everyne arund me. I grew t lve drawing peple, as I culd highlight the physical features that make everyne unique and beautiful.
      It wasn’t until I began lking carefully int my father’s paintings and the wrk f ppular artists n Instagram that I started t be mre critical f my wrk. I started t wrry that I culd never live up t my father’s talent. My simple, tw-dimensinal (2D) drawings fell flat cmpared t his realistic landscapes. Ging thrugh my sketchbks and prtflis, I fund fault in all my drawings. Art was my favrite thing in the wrld but I started t believe I wasn’t gd at it. Instead f wrking tward imprving, I decided t give up drawing.
      My father nticed that I had been drawing and painting less and tld me, “Mia, yu shuld auditin fr the schl. I wish I’d had an pprtunity t study art like this when I was a kid.” My father’s bravery and strength are things that I desire t have. S ver the next few mnths, I wrked n my prtfli. Lking back at my pictures, I can see hw much I have imprved since then. The schl must have seen ptential in my drawings because I gt in!
