      Yin, a Ph. D. student in Beijing, has turned a basement int an “undergrund cat city” by vlunteering t care fr abut 150 hmeless cats.       There are small animals living in the seaflr mud (淤泥) that scientists believe play an imprtant rle in slwing dwn the influences f climate change.       Cllecting the 60 seaflr samples was very difficult because f the Saguenay Fjrd’s depth, waves and water mvement. The scientists needed t get the samples ff the Saguenay Fjrd’s grund, and cnsidering that the Saguenay is 200 metres deep, that’s quite a great achievement. Frm the bat, the scientists used a special tl t get samples.
      After they were pulled frm the fjrd’s bttm, the samples were transprted t a special place in Chicutimi, Que. fr study and experiment. They put a special sand n tp f the mud in rder t track the digging mvements f the animals, sme f which were t small t spt with the naked eye. What appeared frm the mud was a small wrld, being full f life.
      While the animals were small, the scientists fund that they can help keep the seaflr healthy and finally supprt the whle sea ecsystem. The way that the small animals mve the sediment (沉淀物) changes the entire structure f the ecsystem.

      A new study fund that vlunteer dg-handler teams — made up f everyday peple and their pets — can find and recgnize the hard-t-find eggs f the sptted lanternfly (斑衣蜡蝉), an insect (昆虫) that’s being bad fr farms and frests acrss the eastern and central US.
      The sptted lanternfly was first fund in Pennsylvania in 2014. Since then, it’s spread quickly t 18 states, laying its eggs n trees, stnes, and even cars, where it can get a ride t a new hme. “They ften lk like the uter cvering f mud, dry leaves, cracks, r ther things’ undersides,” said Mizuh Nita, a plant specialist. “Finding them is like searching fr a needle in the cean.”
      With a sense f smell that’s tens f thusands f times mre sensitive than humans, dgs can be trained t find sptted lanternfly eggs. Research shwed that prfessinal dgs can d this with accurate infrmatin. But prfessinal dgs are expensive, and there aren’t nearly enugh f them t cver the grwing danger. S the researchers advised the tens f thusands f dg wners already ding scent detectin (气味探测) as a hbby t find hidden scents fr fun in hmes, parks, and training classes. And ver 1,000 dg wners tk part in the study.
      The results? Dgs crrectly identified the sptted lanternfly eggs 82 percent f the time in the cntrlled tests. In the real-wrld fields, accuracy drpped t 61 percent — still better than many human searches. “Anytime yu can practise with yur dg, which is gd fr them,” said Wellbrn, ne f the researchers. “Dg wners bviusly enjy it. And it’s a way they can take dg skills and training t help their cmmunity.”
      Finding the sptted lanternfly eggs may be just the beginning. Anther study fund that trained pet dgs culd als detect pwdery mildew, a majr disease f grapes, with ver 90 percent accuracy. Tgether, these studies pint t a grwing rle fr dgs and their wners in safeguarding agriculture.
