It was my birthday, and I was celebrating it as I had fr years: by watching the meter shwer (流星雨). But this year was different. At 23, I was away frm my family fr the first time. I was wrking n my graduate degree in medicine as I had planned t d fr the past 15 years. But nw, watching the meter shwer, I began t questin that path.
In the weeks since starting my degree, I had met peple in areas I had never cnsidered — neurscience, archaelgy, and even astrphysics. Culd my lifelng lve fr astrnmy be mre than a hbby? Shuld I stick t my lng-standing plans r turn t the unknwn?
Then anther event helped me make a decisin: a slar eclipse (日食). I fund a quiet spt in a valley. The anticipatin built as the Mn gradually slid in frnt f the Sun. Finally, the wrld arund me became dark. The water was still, the birds became nisy, and the sunset surrunded me. I knew what I had t d. I gave up medicine t pursue previusly unimagined ptins.
Nw, n my final year f my Ph. D. prgram in astrnmy, I realize that my expsure t the night sky grwing up gave me a great gift. It ffered me a universal view: Facing ur vast universe, ur individual needs, desires, and insecurities becme insignificant, bringing humanity tgether. It liberated me frm allwing earthly wrries, shame, r self-dubt t stand in the way f pursuing new dreams.
I created a prject called Dark Energy Explrers, a prject that gets the public invlved in real cutting-edge astrnmical research. Nw, it’s a cmmunity f 17,000 vlunteers frm 140 cuntries. During this year’s meter shwer, I’ll be presenting my research at the Internatinal Astrnmical Unin cnference. The little girl inside me wh watched the meter shwer frm the backyard can’t wait t watch the same bits f rck and ice flash acrss the Suth African sky.

It is a cmmn view that “Necessity is the mther f inventin”. That is, inventins suppsedly arise when a sciety has an unfulfilled need. Quite a few inventins d fit in this categry. Fr example, in 1794 Eli Whitney invented cttn gins (轧棉机) t replace labrius hand cleaning f cttn grwn in the U. S. Suth.
Such familiar examples fl us int assuming that ther majr inventins were als respnses t perceived needs. In fact, mst inventins were develped by peple driven by curisity r by a lve f tinkering (捣鼓). Once a device had been invented, the inventr then had t find an applicatin fr it. Only after it had been in use fr a cnsiderable time did cnsumers cme t feel that they “needed” it. Thus, inventin is ften the mther f necessity, rather than vice versa.
A gd example is the histry f the mtr vehicle which was nt invented in respnse t any demand. When Niklaus Ott built his first gas engine in 1866, it was weak, heavy, and seven feet tall. Thirty years later, he built the first truck. But it was a time when hrse wagns and steam-pwered railrads dminated transprtatin. Public cntentment with these tw means remained high until Wrld War I when the armies cncluded that they really did need trucks, which eventually made thse vehicles a substitute fr hrse-drawn wagns in industrialized cuntries.
Inventrs ften have t insist n their tinkering fr a lng time in the absence f public demand, because early mdels perfrm t prly t be useful. Fr instance, the first cameras, typewriters, and televisin sets were as awful as Ott’s seven-ft-tall gas engine. That makes it difficult fr an inventr t fresee whether his r her awful prttype might eventually find a use and thus invest mre time and expense t develp it. Even inventins that meet the need fr which they were initially designed may later prve mre valuable at meeting unfreseen needs. While James Watt designed his steam engine t pump water frm mines, it sn was supplying pwer t cttn mills, then (with much greater prfit) driving trains and bats.
8. Why is Eli Whitney mentined by the writer in the first paragraph?
A. T intrduce the tpic.B. T deny a statement.
C. T clarify a dubt.D. T illustrate a view.
9. What led t the wide use f mtr vehicles accrding t the text?
A. The imprvement f engine perfrmance.B. The end f Wrld War I.
C. The need f the military during war time.D. The decline f hrse-drawn wagns.
10. What des the underlined wrd “That” refer t in the last paragraph?
A. Absence f public demand.B. Bad perfrmance f early mdels.
C. A lack f time and expense.D. Awful lks f previus inventins.
11. Which f the fllwing is the best title fr the text?
A. Scial Need: the Inner Drive fr Inventin
B. Great Inventin: the Frce f Sciety’s Prgress
C. Beynd Necessity: the Curius Pursuit f Inventin
D. General Applicatin: the Final Purpse f Inventin
D
The grwing interactin between humans and artificial intelligence (AI) is shaping a new way f thinking, knwn as System 0. This new cgnitive (认知的) framewrk exists utside the human mind and wrks as an external “thinking assistant”. System 0 wrks alngside the tw established mdels f human thught: System l, which is fast, intuitive (直觉的) , and autmatic, and System 2, which is slwer, mre analytical, and reflective.
Just as an external drive allws us t stre data that are nt present n the cmputer, and we can wrk by cnnecting ur drive t a PC wherever we are. AI, with its pwerful prcessing and data-handling capabilities, can represent an external circuit t the human brain capable f enhancing it. Hence the idea f System 0, which is essentially a frm f “external” thinking that relies n the capabilities f AI.
By managing enrmus amunts f data, AI can prcess infrmatin and prvide suggestins based n cmplex algrithms (算法). Hwever, unlike intuitive r analytical thinking, System 0 can perfrm calculatins, make predictins, and generate respnses withut truly “understanding” the cntent f the data it wrks with.
The integratin f system 0 int human cgnitin raises sme cncerns. One f the mst pressing nes is the ptential damage t ur critical thinking and reasning abilities. If we blindly trust the utput f system 0 withut questining it, we risk lsing ur ability t think independently, leading t a weaker capacity fr innvatin and creativity. At the same time, it is imprtant t acknwledge the ptential benefits f system 0 in increasing ur cgnitive capabilities and addressing cmplex challenges that may be beynd the capacity f human intelligence alne.
Despite the plarized visins n the tpic f the evlutin f AI, we recmmend that this revlutinary system be the bject f a deep, shared reflectin n hw we plan t integrate it int the future f human thught. T ensure that AI remains a tl t enhance — rather than decrease — ur cgnitive autnmy, clear bundaries must be established.
12. What is the purpse f paragraph 1?
A. T state AI’s influence n daily life.B. T intrduce a new cgnitive mdel.
C. T cmpare three thinking systems.D. T discuss AI’s rle in decisin-making.
13. Which can best describe the essence f System 0?
A. A deep meaning seeker.B. An analytical thinking pineer.
C. A smart decisin-maker.D. An external cgnitive enhancer.
14. What is the authr’s tne carried in paragraph 4?
A. Pushy.B. Indifferent.C. Objective.D. Dismissive.
15. What will the fllw-up paragraph mst prbably talk abut?
A. Mral dilemmas in human-AI integratin.
B. Pssibly prmising prspects f System 0.
C. Technical challenges in sharpening System 0.
D. Specific guidelines n using System 0 critically.

Nise-Cancelling Headphnes: A Duble-Edged Swrd fr Hearing?
They are prized fr making the daily trip mre bearable and creating a barrier against the nise f daily life. But sme specialists suspect that verusing the nise-cancelling headphnes which cnstantly blcking ut backgrund nise may have unintended cnsequences.
Renee Almeida, an adult audilgy clinical lead at Imperial Cllege healthcare NHS trust, has seen an increase in adults cming t her clinic with hearing issues nly fr tests t suggest their hearing is fine. The prblem is with their brain, nt their ears. They might fail t lcate where a sund is cming frm, r struggle t fllw a cnversatin n the train, in a bar r at a restaurant. The cnditin, knwn as auditry prcessing disrder, is ften diagnsed in children, s the rise in adults with similar issues struck Almeida as dd. Almeida suspects prlnged headphne use, which limits the brain’s expsure t multiple sunds, might be respnsible.
“Nrmally, ur brains srt thusands f sunds and priritize imprtant nes,” Almeida explains.” But nise-cancelling headphnes deliver nly ne sund surce — music r pdcasts — depriving the brain f practice in distinguishing speech frm backgrund nise.”
Hwever, fr Harvey Dilln, a prfessr f auditry science at the University f Manchester, Almeida’s idea is an assumptin yet t be tested.” There is n research investigating the link between the use f nise-cancelling headphnes and reduced auditry prcessing ability,” he says. He cautins that lud music can damage neurns (神经元) in the auditry system. “It may be that listening t lud music is the cause f the auditry prcessing prblem, nt the nise-cancelling feature,” he says.” If s, nise cancelling culd be a gd feature, as it allws ne t listen t music withut interference frm backgrund nise.”
While theries abut headphne-related harm remain unprven, experts agree n ne pint: understanding hw mdern listening habits reshape auditry prcessing requires urgent scientific attentin.
