D 5. A 6. A 7. C
I was ging thrugh the shelf f bks n writing and it caught my eye. I picked it up,
read a few pages, and bught it.(我正在浏览写作书籍的书架,它引起了我的注意。
Free writing, timed writing, writing tpics: anyne wh has taken a creative
writing class may have encuntered these things.(自由写作,定时写作,写作主题:任何上过创意写作课的人都
There was nthing particularly new r unusual abut the bk s
I can’t say why it attracted me s much.
故选 A。
But it changed everything. I went frm being smene wh enjyed writing t being a
故选 A。
This writing practice led me t a writing grup in Bstn. It led me t my current
career. It led me, in s many ways, t myself. Becming a writer allwed me t becme s many ther things: an
activist, a business wner, a farmer, a baker... Writing is where I fund my cnfidence. It was where becming
curius abut the wrld. Frm that, everything else has fllwed.(这种写作练习让我结识了一个位于波士顿的

In a new study, the researchers examined trends in subjective well-being (幸福) ver the curse f a lifespan
based n 443 samples frm a ttal f 460,902 participants. “We fcused n changes in three central cmpnents f

health ften wrsens, and scial cntacts reduce; nt least because their peers pass away,” calculates the researcher.
The study highlights the need t cnsider and prmte subjective well-being with its varius cmpnents

develpment f interventin prgrammes, especially thse aimed at maintaining r imprving subjective
      well-being late in life.
      8. What is exactly the subject f the study?

      C. Life satisfactin rebunds after adlescence, while psitive emtins shw a lng-term decline thrughut mst

      D. The fundamental reasn fr the decline in well-being in very late adulthd is the significant increase in
      negative emtins.
      10. What is the psitive significance f this study?
      A. Teaching t imprve physical perfrmance.
      B. Giving suggestins n the lifetime increase.
      C. Prviding a theretical basis fr healthy grwth.

The rainfrests are alive with the sund f animals. Besides the pleasure f the din, it is als useful t
eclgists. If yu want t measure the bidiversity f a piece f land, listening ut fr animal calls is much easier
than digging abut in the undergrwth lking fr tracks. But such “bi-acustic analysis” is still time-cnsuming,
and it requires an expert pair f ears.
In a paper published n Octber 17th in Nature Cmmunicatins, a grup f researchers led by Jörg Müller,
an eclgist at the University f Würzburg, describe a better way: have a cmputer d the jb. Smartphne apps
already exist that will identify birds, bats r mammals simply by listening t the sunds they make. Their idea was
t apply the principle t cnservatin wrk.
The researchers tk recrdings frm acrss 43 sites in the Ecuadrean rainfrest. Sund recrdings were
taken fur times every hur, ver tw weeks. The varius calls were identified manually by an expert, and then
used t cnstruct a list f the species present. As expected, the lnger the land had been free frm agricultural
activity, the greater the bidiversity it hsted.
Then it was the cmputer’s turn. The researchers fed their recrdings t artificial-intelligence mdels that had
been trained, using sund samples frm elsewhere in Ecuadr, t identify 75 bird species frm their calls. “We
fund that the AI tls culd identify the sunds as well as the experts,” says Dr Müller.
Of curse, nt everything in a rainfrest makes a nise. Dr Müller and his clleagues used light-traps t
capture night-flying insects, and DNA analysis t identify them. Reassuringly, they fund that the diversity f
nisy animals was a reliable prxy (指标) fr the diversity f the quieter nes, t.
The results may have relevance utside eclgy departments, t. Under pressure frm their custmers, firms
such as L’Oreal, a make-up cmpany, and Shell, an il firm, have been spending mney n frest restratin
prjects arund the wrld. Dr Müller hpes that an autmated apprach t checking n the results culd help
mnitr such effrts, and give a standardized way t measure whether they are wrking as well as their spnsrs
      say.
