Spanish scientist Pilar Bsch has fund a way t use bacteria (细菌) t repair 18th-century paintings. Bsch, a micrbilgist, tells Reuters she gt the idea fr the methd while cnsidering pssibilities fr a paper tward her dctral degree. During this prcess, she discvered smene else’s paper that suggested bacteria can be used t restre (修复) artwrks.
At arund the same time, Bsch learned that her mther was struggling t find a gd methd fr repairing 18th-century paintings in the church. Bsch said her mther, Pilar Rig, nted hw difficult the restratin prcess was. One reasn was the glue (胶水) used t attach paintings t walls in the 1960s. It was nearly impssible t remve the glue cmpletely. “My mther had a very difficult prblem t slve and I fund a paper abut bacteria used t clean fresces (壁画) in Italy,” Bsch said.
Bsch added she decided t write her dctral paper n the same subject. That was mre than ten years ag. Tday, she gets t wrk with her mther n the church paintings’ restratin. They are using the bacteria methd t remve glue frm artwrks. The mney f the $4.46 millin prject is given by lcal rganizatins. The prcess invlves feeding small amunts f the glue — made frm animal cllagen (胶原) — t the bacteria. After a time, the bacteria begin t naturally prduce enzymes (酶) t break dwn the glue. The mther-daughter team then mixes the bacteria with a natural algae-based substance, called a gel (凝胶), and places it nt the paintings. After abut three hurs, the gel mixture is remved, leaving the paintings glue-free.
Bsch’s mther, nw 75, nted that in the past, restrers f artwrks had t use traditinal cleaning methds that tk hurs and damaged the paintings. Bsch has als used her bacteria methd prcess in ther restratin prjects in Italy and Spain.
4. What made Pilar Bsch cme up with the idea f restring artwrks with bacteria?
A. A paper she had read.B. The inspiratin frm her mther.

Plastic pllutin is hurting the planet. Even when plastics break dwn, tiny bits f them still end up plluting the air, the ceans, ur fd — and even ur bld. But a new material might help limit that.
“We’re basically running a giant experiment right nw, in terms f what micrplastics are ding t us,” says Michael Burkart, a chemical bilgist at the University f Califrnia, San Dieg (UCSD). Mst plastics have been made frm crude il, a fssil fuel. Fur years ag, Burkart’s team at UCSD develped a new type. They made it frm building blcks that can be prduced by algae (藻类). Nw, they’ve shwn that this plastic breaks dwn quickly when a particular species f bacteria dine n it.
The new plastic is a type f plyurethane (聚氨酯). It cntains many chemical building blcks. Thse building blcks are made frm ingredients prduced by plants and algae. Many types f micrbes (微生物) break dwn plants and algae and eat thse building blcks. The researchers suspected thse micrbes might d the same thing t the building blcks f the new plastic.
T test that, Burkart’s team brke their new plastic int tiny particles. They did the same with a different type f plastic made frm fssil fuels. It’s knwn as ethyl vinyl acetate, r EVA. Then researchers mixed these micrplastics with fresh cmpst (堆肥) — a mist mix f decmpsed (被分解的) plants, fd waste and micrbes. After 90 days, 68 percent f the new plastic had brken dwn. That number climbed t 97 percent after abut seven mnths. In cntrast, the researchers saw n EVA breakdwn thrughut that time.
The scientists als cated a piece f clth in the new plastic. After being mixed with the cmpst fr tw weeks, that clth easily brke apart. Anther piece f the cated clth was nt cmpsted. It was still undamaged after tw weeks.
“I’m s excited fr this in the textiles (纺织品) industry” says Lisa Erdle, an ectxiclgist (生态毒理学家) at 5 Gyres. “Plyurethane is smetimes used t cat natural fibers, like wl and cttn, fr clthing. Over time, that plastic cating falls ff, turning int smaller and smaller pieces and never ging away. Having smething that can easily be brken dwn by bacteria is better than having persistent plastics in the envirnment.”
8. What can we learn abut the building blcks in the new plastic?
A. They are sft and flexible.
B. They are made frm fssil fuels.
C. They can be btained frm algae.
D. They can be digested by animals.
9. What is the functin f the last paragraph but ne?
A. T further supprt the experiment’s result.
B. T explain the experiment’s result in detail.
C. T shw the wide applicatin f the plastic.
D. T stress the necessity f using the new plastic in clthing.
10. What is Lisa Erdle’s attitude t the new plastic?
A. Dubtful.B. Supprtive.
C. Indifferent.D. Cncerned.
11. What is the authr’s purpse in writing the text?
A. T call n peple t reduce plastic use.
B. T raise peple’s awareness f plastic pllutin.
C. T intrduce a new kind f envirnmentally-friendly plastic.
D. T shw the damaging impact f the plastic n the envirnment.

Obviusly, the use f artificial intelligence (AI) is expanding quickly. But industry experts are wrried because AI machines are energy-intensive. Therefre, many big cmpanies are even cnsidering using alternative energy t meet their AI needs.
“The average electricity cnsumptin f ChatGPT service in early 2023 was 564 MWh per day, equal t the ttal daily electricity usage f 18,000 families in the United States,” the researchers mentined in a study. They have prpsed a new algrithm (算法) that has the ptential t reduce the amunt f energy an AI machine requires t carry ut cmputatin (计算). “Reducing the amunt f cmputatin needed by neural netwrks is the key t reduce bth energy cnsumptin and inference speed fr large-scale AI mdels,” stated the BitEnergy AI researchers.
The new methd, knwn as Linear-Cmplexity Multiplicatin (线性复杂度乘法) (L-Mul), ptimizes the mathematical peratins that run AI. Fr cntext, AI mdels rely heavily n cmplex calculatins, particularly flating-pint multiplicatins (浮点数乘法), which are essential fr handling the vast amunts f data they prcess. These calculatins, while precise, are very energy-intensive. Accrding t the researchers, applying L-Mul t tensr (张量) prcessing hardware can significantly reduce energy csts assciated with element-wise flating pint tensr multiplicatins and dt prducts. L-Mul replaces the energy-intensive multiplicatins with simpler integer additins (整数加法). By breaking dwn the cmplex multiplicatins int mre manageable steps, it significantly reduces the energy required fr cmputatins.
“Since multiplying flating pint numbers requires substantially higher energy cmpared t integer additin peratins, applying the L-Mul peratin in tensr prcessing hardware can ptentially reduce 95% energy cst by element-wise flating pint tensr multiplicatins and 80% energy cst f dt prducts,” highlighted the study.
L-Mul ffers perfrmance advantages. Integer additins are faster than flating-pint multiplicatins, leading t quicker cmputatins. Furthermre, the researchers suggest that L-Mul maintains the accuracy f AI mdels. L-Mul is highly in harmny with transfrmer-based mdels, the architecture behind ppular AI systems like ChatGPT. These mdels rely n an “attentin mechanism” t prcess and understand relatinships within data.
Hwever, the widespread adptin f L-Mul faces sme barriers. Currently, the technique requires specialized hardware that is nt yet readily available. BitEnergy AI is actively develping this hardware and creating prgramming interfaces t facilitate its integratin int existing AI systems.
“T unlck the full ptential f ur prpsed methd, we will carry ut the L-Mul and L-Matmul kernel algrithms n hardware level and develp prgramming APIs fr high-level mdel design,” the study cncluded.
12. Why des the authr mentin sme numbers in paragraph 2?
A. T prve AI machines are energy-intensive.
B. T clarify the necessity f creating a new algrithm.
C. T shw the ppularity f artificial intelligence.
D. T explain why the United States faces electricity shrtage.
13. Hw des Linear-Cmplexity Multiplicatin lessen energy cnsumptin?
A. By enhancing the accuracy f AI mdels.
B. By speeding up cmputatins.
C. By prcessing the vast amunts f data.
D. By changing the way f calculatins.
14. What des the underlined wrd “ptimizes” mean in paragraph 3?
A. Slws dwn.B. Keeps a recrd f.
C. Makes full use f.D. Breaks dwn.
15. What wuld be the best title fr the text?
A. Dilemma Faced by Large-Scale AI Mdels
B. The Rise f AI: Challenges and Opprtunities
C. Will L-Mul Replace the Energy-intensive Multiplicatins?
D. L-Mul: A New Breakthrugh in Reducing AI Energy Cnsumptin

There were mments when I was annyed with humans as a whle, simply because I culdn’t seem t please anyne. Nevertheless, I kept at it.
On a rainy day, I spent my afternn handing custmers’ rders and waiting as they slwly cunted their pennies. I tried t smile as the custmers cmplained abut the rain, but it was difficult t smile as they sat in their temperature-cntrlled cars with the windws rlled up while I dealt with huge drps f water hanging frm my visr (帽舌). On tp f that, n ne was tipping. Every time I lked int my nearly empty tip jar, I grew mre frustrated.
Arund fur ’clck, ne f my regular custmers named Lucas came in lking depressed and defeated. My c-wrker and I asked what the prblem was and if we culd help, but he wuldn’t tell any details.
