Yang Li, a native Mia wman passinate abut embridery, wns a flk culture prducts shp that sells Mia embridery, batik clth, and silver jewelry. At first, the small shp struggled as there were many similar prducts n the market. Yang realized the need fr a unique brand t stand ut frm the cmpetitin. During a hike in Fanjing Muntain in July 2011, Yang accidentally cut her hand n a thrny leaf. This gave her an idea; “There are leaf-vein bkmarks and leaf-vein paintings. Why has nbdy created leaf-vein embridery yet?”
Obviusly, the reasn behind this is that embridering n leaves requires delicate skills that few pssess. Yang Li cllected thusands f leaves frm Fanjing Muntain and prcessed them by steaming, biling, and tanning them t expse their veins. While the leaves becme sft, they are als extremely fragile. The biggest challenge was imprving the flexibility f the leaves. After cnsulting lcal expert Shen Min, she learned that saking them in acidic water culd make them tugh enugh fr embridery.
Thrugh cntinuus learning and practice, she succeeded in creating her first piece f leaf-vein embridery, which perfectly cmbines traditinal embridery patterns with the natural textures f the leaves. By adding traditinal designs frm the Mia, Tujia, and Dng ethnic grups, she prduced art that exhibits a unique aesthetic appeal f traditinal embridery with cntemprary craftsmanship. Yang ntes that typically, nly thse with decades f embridery experience can independently cmplete the entire leaf-embridery prcess, which is fewer than 20 peple in Tngren frm 2011 t nw.
Tw years later, Yang pened an embridery prcessing factry and ffered jbs t mre than 500 laid-ff female wrkers, rural wmen, and peple with disabilities. “Guizhu is a prvince with a large number f ethnic grups and has a lng histry f ethnic embridery skills,” she says. “I will keep ding the leaf-vein embridery fr the rest f my life because it is meaningful.”
      1. What inspired Yang Li t create leaf-vein embridery?
      A. Her lve fr Mia embridery.B. The discvery f a special leaf.
      C. An accidental injury t her hand.D. A decrease in her shp’s earnings.
      2. What is the biggest challenge fr Yang Li?

I recently had a parent say t me, “ChatGPT can prduce a gd essay (文章) n just abut any tpic in 3.4 secnds. Yu’re nt still teaching kids essay writing the ld way, are yu?” Gd questin. As a high schl teacher, I still ask my students t send me handwritten essays. Yes, it’s true: AI tls like ChatGPT and ther large language mdels (LLMs) are great resurces. But I still like the “ld way”.
If the “new way” creates mre time fr students’ ther activities and less stress fr students, as an educatr, I am interested in hw I might encurage my students t use AI in acceptable ways that supprt their academic (学术的) gals. A gd example f this is using Grammarly while writing an essay. But, if by “ld way” that parent meant that I’m still asking students t write withut ChatGPT, even with a pencil and piece f paper, my answer is als yes. Studies suggest that writing by hand prmtes mre cmplex (复杂的) brain cnnectins that are imprtant in understanding new infrmatin. In ther wrds, the actual act f writing by hand can deepen the understanding f whatever students are learning in their classes.
Smetimes, AI tls can “cheat”, leading t misinfrmatin that many students might ignre (忽视). It’s imprtant and necessary that students dn’t simply see these technlgies as “cl tls that knw everything” and instead — befre they use them — are taught by the educatrs abut their limitatins.
As teachers get better at helping students learn hw t use AI and students get better at using it, there will certainly be reasns fr them t d s fr the sake f efficiency (为了效率). Hwever, remember the saying that “childhd ges s fast”? It’s true. There will be plenty f time fr yung peple — after they’ve learned t think fr themselves — t adapt t AI’s rle in their futures. While they’re yung, let’s nt rush them.
      5. What is the authr’s requirement fr her students?
      A. Jining schl activities.
      B. Writing essays by hand.
      C. Knwing different LLMs.
      D. Learning a secnd language.
      6. What can we learn abut the authr frm the example given in paragraph 2?

      C. She wrries LLMs wuld replace teachers.
      D. She prmtes paperless teaching and learning.

      C. Prgress des nt happen vernight.
      D. LLMs can be great learning resurces.
      8. Which statement will the authr prbably agree with?

When yu picture a z, what d yu see? A lne bear in a cncrete cage, pacing aimlessly in frnt f turists? Or a grup f vlunteers, trying desperately t clean the bdy f the giant panda? The rle f zs is unclear at first thught. On the ne hand, funding frm zs cmes frm visitrs and dnrs, s t attract the public, zs must put n a gd shw. On the ther hand, there is a grwing cry t prtect the animal kingdm frm cnservatin-cncerned individuals. That puts zs in a dilemma.
Lndn Z, which pened t members in 1828 as the first scientific z, pened its drs t the public 19 years later as it was nt receiving sufficient funding. Hwever, when the envirnmental mvement was brn in the late 20th Century, Lndn Z began t change its fcus. In the same year when the IUCN Red List was first published, Lndn Z wrked with Phenix Z n a cperative prgramme t bst Arabian ryx (大羚羊) numbers. Lndn Z sn became the mdel n hw t run a z that can satisfy bth its visitrs and its inhabitants.
Sme zs did nt fllw suit. The reputatin f SeaWrld declined, fllwing the dcumentary Blackfish, an expsure n SeaWrld’s pr treatment f their killer whales. It is clear frm their website that sea creatures’ wellbeing and cnservatin are nt SeaWrld’s pririty. They are happy t advertise their sea lin shws and penguin petting experiences, but their cnservatin “missin” is tucked neatly int a dusty crner f the website. Knwing that places such as SeaWrld may nt prvide the best care fr their animals, we cntinue t give them ur mney.
Hwever, we shuld nt stp visiting zs. Zs are essential t ur educatin. Zs are utdrs, sul-lifting, and in need f ftfall t remain pen and serving the animal kingdm. S research zs befre yu visit them. Only pay fr tickets t zs that cmmit t cnservatin, aim t educate rather than entertain and have high animal welfare standards. D nt tlerate any less. Celebrate zs which d it right.
      9. What leads t the dilemma in paragraph 1?
      A. The prtest frm vlunteers.
      B. The cmpetitin amng zs.
      C. The pressure frm funding and cnservatin.
      D. The cnflict between visitrs and z keepers.
      10. Why is Lndn Z mentined?
      A. T give an example.B. T intrduce an pinin.
      C. T make a predictin.D. T recmmend a destinatin.
      11. What des the underlined wrd “tucked” in paragraph 3 prbably mean?
      A. Written.B. Divided.C. Hidden.D. Cmbined.
      12. What des the authr suggest visitrs d in the last paragraph?
      A. Celebrate the animal shws.B. Fund the prly-managed zs.
      C. Recgnize zs devted t prtectin.D. Increase their visits t different zs.

Maybe 8 mnths int my wrk, we had a new student named Jack, wh was nearly 3 years ld but hardly knew any wrds. In fact when he arrived, the nly wrds he wuld say were “hi” and “n”. Based n ur wrking experience, we suspected his parents just never interacted with him at hme.

The mment they arrived, Jack wuld start crying, hlding nt the hand r leg f his mther, wh wuld just struggle t get the by ff her, saying “Let me g, Jack.” and then walk away withut a lk back. When she picked him up in the afternn, Jack wuld run up t shw her smething but she wuld simply stare blankly at him and say “Let’s g, Jack.” If the teachers reprted anything t her, she’d say “I see.” “Mhmm.”, giving us the same absent lk.
Jack’s dad rarely came and he was just as bad. He bviusly had an anger prblem. Anytime he heard smething negative had happened, he wuld turn red, stare angrily at his sn and just say “HUH. Well. We will deal with it.” in such a cld vice.
As a result, the by, wh lnged desperately fr attentin and lve, was always bad-tempered (坏脾气). He wuld run, kick, hit, and even smetimes bite ther kids. And when he did it he wuld laugh and turn t us t lk fr a reactin. We criticized and punished him again and again, but it didn’t wrk at all. After his secnd week, the lead teacher decided t talk t his mm abut it. His mm just shrugged (耸肩), it ff, gave that blank lk and said, “Oh yeah, Jack is a handful (难管的人).
