The first half f the bk explres hw researchers in the 1950s-70s uncvered messenger RNA (mRNA) — the mlecule that carries DNA instructins t build prteins. A majr surprise came in 1977: genes in plants and animals cntain “junk” sectins called intrns, which cells cut ut befre making prteins. This discvery shcked the field, as n ne had predicted that gene sequence wuld nt crrespnd precisely t prtein sequence.
The secnd half f the bk deals with hw gene-editing tls and therapeutics have been develped, thanks t basic research int RNA’s varius functins. Fr instance, the mRNA vaccines (疫苗) that beat back COVID-19 were develped in less than a year. But they were built n the back f decades f wrk n ways t change RNAs t deliver them int cells. Similar vaccines are nw being develped t cmbat the deadly respiratry syncytial virus, the cmmn cld and even cancer.
Cech cncludes by singing the praises f the imprtance f curisity-driven research, s beautifully illustrated in The catalyst. As he argues, RNA's nging stry teaches a vital lessn: tday’s “useless” research ften seeds tmrrw's revlutins. Cech asks, might these mysterius RNAs hld the key t understanding what makes us human? Finding the answer, he predicts, will prbably fill “future chapters in the bk f RNA”. Cech asks readers t lk beynd the textbks, t future discveries.
