The analysis revealed an astnishing diversity in life expectancy, ranging frm an average f tw years fr the fig parrt up t an average f 30 years fr the scarlet macaw.
Next, the team tried t determine whether r nt parrts’ renwned cgnitive abilities had any influence n their lngevity. Their results supprt the thery that increased brain size has enabled lnger lifespans. Because brain size relative t bdy size can be an indicatr f intelligence, the findings suggested that the parrts with larger brains were able t survive fr lnger in the wild.
The scientists were surprised that factrs such as diet, r the greater develpmental time required t develp larger brains, did nt lead t lnger average lifespans. “We wuld have expected the develpmental path t play a mre imprtant rle because in primates it is this develpmental cst that explains the link between brain size and lngevity,” said Smeele.
