I never imagined that a Chinese figure wuld becme my guiding star and the inspiratin behind a glbal mvement.
In 2018, I first came t China t study at Jiangxi University f Finance and Ecnmics (JUFE) and actively participated in the university’s public welfare activities. Lcal peple ften called me “Yang Lei Feng”, which I later learned means “freign Lei Feng”.
Curius, I checked him nline and discvered a yung sldier knwn fr his dedicatin t helping thers. The mre I read, the mre I saw hw his values matched the principles I desired t fllw. Grwing up in Bangladesh, I was fully aware f the challenges facing my cmmunity and my cuntry—pverty, inequality, and limited access t educatin and healthcare were unpleasant realities that I witnessed firsthand. These experiences fired up my determinatin t cntribute t psitive change and ease the suffering f thers.
Greatly inspired, I established the Lei Feng Internatinal Vlunteer Assciatin n March 5, 2021 —Lei Feng Day—alngside yung peple frm different cuntries at JUFE. Our missin is t supprt children with special needs, assist the elderly, prmte envirnmental awareness, and enhance crss-cultural understanding. Thrugh these effrts, we cntinue t keep Lei Feng’s spirit alive in a mdern, glbal cntext.
T knw mre abut this yung man, I traveled in 2023 t Lianing prvince. I visited the Lei Feng Memrial Hall in Fushun, the city where he spent much f his life. The exhibits—his phtgraphs, persnal belngings, and diary entries—ffered a glimpse int his selflessness.
Returning frm the trip, n Lei Feng Day in 2023, I tk a bld step t spread his legacy beynd China by launching the glbal “Learn frm Lei Feng” initiative. What began as a visin t prmte his values internatinally has since grwn int a glbal mvement, nw spanning 15 cuntries.
In a wrld ften fcused n individual success, Lei Feng’s philsphy f selflessness and cmmunity service felt mre relevant than ever. His life was nt abut grand gestures but rather a series f small acts f kindness that, when multiplied, can create a better wrld fr all.

When I talk abut punishments here, I d nt mean what we’ve cme t think f punishments: smething an angry parent yells while red in the face, taking away their kid’s scial life fr a mnth. Actually, a punishment is a negative cnsequence that reduces the chance an undesirable behavir (行为) will happen again. What I’m supprting is negative cnsequences.
Sme mmmy blgs have been telling parents t drp cnsequences cmpletely. The reasn fr this suggestin is that giving kids cnsequences breaks the parent - child cnnectin. But decades f research n behaviral parenting say it’s cmpletely wrng.
Here’s what the research shws abut negative cnsequences: When kids misbehave (不守规矩) and dn’t respnd t an rder t stp r a warning abut a cnsequence, and parents give a brief, clear and negative cnsequence, kids tend t respnd well. This is because a few imprtant things happen in this situatin:
Parents mdel emtinal cntrl. They dn’t lse it. They knw what t d, s they can stay in cntrl. They dn’t try smething that isn’t wrking many times and then get upset when it desn’t wrk. They stay calm and in cntrl. Kids respnd t what they see. When parents are in cntrl, kids are ften able t get int cntrl mre quickly themselves.
Parents teach kids the rules. Kids tend t d well when they knw the rules. Mst kids want t fllw the rules (at least mst f the time).
It’s kids’ jb t test the rules. That is part f develping independence, which happens thrughut healthy develpment. If parents respnd t these tests by letting kids knw the limits, kids feel safe and secure. They feel secure because they can expect what will happen in respnse t their behavir. Feeling secure and safe makes kids feel cnnected t their parents.
There yu g, yu can have cnsequences and cnnectin tgether.
4. What des the authr advise parents t d when kids misbehave?
A. Leave them alne.B. Stp them angrily.
C. Tell them the bad result.D. Cut ff their netwrk.
5. What may happen when parents give kids negative cnsequences?
A. Kids will break the rules.B. Kids will lse emtinal cntrl.
C. Kids will test their parents’ patience.D. Kids will reduce their misbehavir.
6. What will be discussed next abut giving a cnsequence?
A. Its imprtance.B. Its purpse.
C. Its methds.D. Its disadvantages.

Anxius abut returning t wrk after a career break? Yu pst abut yur trubles nline and tw strangers reply. Stranger 1: “I understand yur anxiety; yur curage matters.” Stranger 2: “I’ve struggled with the same prblem. Just jump in!” Studies shw mst find Stranger 1 mre empathetic —but it’s ften a chatbt. Surprised?
Research reveals chatbts frequently utperfrm humans in empathy (同理心). A 2023 study fund 80% f patients preferred chatbts’ respnse t dctrs’ advice. Similarly, a 2024 experiment shwed even when humans were paid t create thughtful replies, they still fell shrt f ChatGPT’s sympathy.
The secret t the chatbts’ success lies in mistakes humans make. When humans see smene in pain, we ften share persnal stries (“I’ve struggled t”) r rush t give advice (“D this!”). While well-meaning, rushing t share pinins can minimize smene’s pain, and shifting the fcus t urselves weakens hpe t be heard. Chatbts, hwever, avid these errrs. Withut persnal experiences r urgency t slve prblems, they fcus entirely n the speaker. In a 2024 study, Micrsft’s Bing Chat scred higher than humans by using a three-step methd: explaining peple’s struggles, acknwledging and justifying hw they might feel, and asking fllw-up questins.
Humans can als adpt similar strategies like “lping fr understanding”—repeating thers’ wrds in their wn terms and checking crrectness (“D I have that right?”). Chatbts are natural lpers, and when humans learn it, they better understand thers’ emtins and make them feel heard. These skills extend beynd strengthening family and friend bnds: dzens f studies shw managers and emplyers using such methds tend t have mre lyal, effective, and prductive emplyees.
Despite AI’s impressive listening skills, it has limits. Chatbts repeat frmulaic (公式化的) respnses (“I hear yu”) that feel rbtic ver time. They can’t feel r truly care fr us, and studies shw mst human beings still want t engage with ther humans. Sme f the bugs f human cnnectin are als, in fact, features. Chatbts can’t rll their eyes r leave ur texts unanswered. But the fact that we ften must earn human empathy, and that it cmes frm limited beings wh sacrifice (牺牲) t be there fr us, is part f its beauty.
7. What is the authr’s purpse in quting the tw strangers’ replies?
A. T cmpare tw ways f giving advice.
B. T intrduce a psychlgical phenmenn.
C. T suggest hw t vercme anxiety.
D. T criticize human’s cmmunicatin.
8. What des the underlined phrase “fell shrt f” mean in paragraph 2?
A. Differed frm.B. Failed t match.
C. Did better than.D. Were in need f.
9. What can humans learn frm chatbts’ empathy strategies?
A. T prvide direct slutins.
B. T stress shared stries.
C. T crrect speakers’ mistakes.
D. T avid self-centered respnses.
10. What des the authr want t say in the last paragraph?
A. AI is an impressive listener.B. Human empathy is valuable.
C. AI respnds t human’s pain calmly.D. There are prblems with human interactin.

Fire has been a crucial tl fr humans fr ver a millin years. It allwed ur ancestrs t ck fd, stay warm, and see in the dark. Despite its imprtance, there is a puzzling gap in evidence regarding its use during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). 11 which was marked by extremely cld temperatures, making fire essential fr survival.

Such high temperatures suggest a cmplicated understanding f fire - making techniques. 13 which suggests that fire was used less frequently during the LGM.
