Andrew Bastawrus was 12 when he fund ut he culd barely see. He was then scially awkward, failing at schl and terrible at ball games.
Glasses turned his life arund, yet even as a child he was aware f hw lucky he was. He c-develped an app-based visual test that gathers as much infrmatin as the classic ne, using similar principles. The critical difference is that almst anyne can carry it ut after just a few minutes f training. Bastawrus c-funded a charitable cmpany t develp and apply the technlgy mre widely. His team als develped technlgies that enabled a smartphne camera t take hspital-grade images f the back f the eye.

“We develped a new strategy fr 3D mtin psitining by electrnic skin, bi-inspired by ‘electric fish,’” says Dr. Xinge Yu, an assciate prfessr in the Department f Bimedical Eagineering at the City University f Hng Kng. The team described their e-skin sensr in a paper published n Nvember 14 in Nature.
The artificial sensr is multi-layered. One layer acts as a transmitter (发射器), which will generate an electric field nce activated, and anther layer acts as a receiver t detect bth the directin and the distance t an bject. A separate cntrller creates the driving signal t activate the transmitter. When an bject cmes within range, the electric field arund the sensr is disrupted, which in turn can be detected by the receiver. Farming and changes in land use, such as cutting dwn frests, are respnsible fr a third f all greenhuse gas emissins. That means reducing farming emissins and the land needed fr farming is required t limit further glbal warming.
Smith and his c-wrkers fund that emissins per unit f fd are n average, 20 per cent lwer fr rganic crps and 4 per cent lwer fr rganic animal prducts. Hwever, rganic harvests per hectare (公顷) are als lwer n average. Fr wheat and barley, fr instance, harvests are just half f thse f traditinal farms. This means 1.5 times as much land wuld be needed t grw the same amunt f these fds.
