Mindful eating desn’t cme naturally t me. I’d develped the habit f ding several things at nce, like eating and reading. It felt like dead time nt t use the pprtunity t kill tw birds with ne stne. I’ve been guilty f eating a really healthy diet — while barely nticing it.
It tk an 11-year-ld t truly shw me what eating mindfully lks like. Many years ag, when my daughter came hme after her first day at secndary schl, I fired a flw f questins at her: “Did yu make new friends?”, “Were the teachers nice?” Entirely fcusing n a cheese sandwich, she lked at me pintedly, “Mummy, I’ll tell yu all abut it in a bit. I just want t enjy eating this sandwich quietly.” S I bit my lip and watched her clse her eyes, smile and “Mmmm” as she chewed. It was a sharp cntrast t hw I ate my lunch.
We’re s used t reducing time that we’ve dwngraded eating t smething t be squeezed(挤压) in while we’re ding smething else. Our grab-and-g culture encurages eating in a rush — the quicker the better. All t ften, we end up wlfing dwn a few biscuits between calls as smething t keep us ging. But there’s a huge dwnside t ur discnnected eating. When yu dn’t fully experience yur fd, yu dn’t pay attentin t whether yu’re hungry r nt — r full r nt.
Our scial media feeds are flded with healthy recipes and there’s n end f fcus n the quality f ur fd. But there’s cmparatively little fcus n hw we eat it — and actually that makes all the difference. S, let’s turn ur attentin t eating slwly, mindfully and with enjyment. Here’s a challenge fr yu: Can yu practice eating at least ne meal a day withut any distractins(分心)? N smartphne, n TV, n radi, n newspaper, n magazines? Yu might well feel a lt f resistance t it at first …… but keep trying!

Scientists have lng debated whether the planet Venus (金星) culd ever have supprted life. Nw, a study f its atmsphere suggests it prbably culdn’t.
Venus is smetimes referred t as “Earth’s evil (邪恶的) twin”. The tw planets are similar in size and are made f the same materials but up clse, Venus’s “evil” side is revealed. The planet is cvered with thick cluds f acid and has an average surface temperature f nearly 500℃.
Plenty f spacecraft have been sent t study the planet, including Venus Express, but it is still a mystery. Sme scientists thught it might have had ceans n its surface. This is imprtant because liquid water is generally accepted as essential t the develpment f life, r, at least, the kind f life we knw abut.
T wrk ut if Venus nce had ceans, the team wanted t see if there was any water inside the planet. They started the search by examining its atmsphere. On ht Venus, water gets int the atmsphere as steam thrwn ut during vlcanic eruptins. By studying the planet’s atmsphere, the team fund that very little water was needed t keep it stable. Frm that, they calculated that gases frm Venus’s vlcanes are nly 6% steam at mst, far less than here n watery Earth.
These “dry” eruptins n Venus suggest that the inside f the planet where the rck and gas in vlcanic eruptins cme frm cntains little water. The team said this lack f water suggests ceans have never existed n the planet. The study’s lead authr, Tereza Cnstantinu, said, “Given that it likely never had ceans, it is hard t imagine Venus ever having supprted Earth-like life, which requires liquid water.”
What was the early evlutin (进化) f Venus and hw did its initial cnditins g different frm Earth? Explring the ptential fr extreme micrrganisms and studying ancient vlcanic activity may prvide further insights int the planet’s past and its ptential fr hsting alternative frms f life.
      8. Why is Venus referred t as “Earth’s evil twin”?
      A. Fr its supprt fr life in a different frm.
      B. Fr a similar surface temperature t Earth.
      C. Fr the same atmspheric cmpsitin as Earth.
      D. Fr its similarity t Earth but wrse envirnment.
      9. What can we learn frm the findings abut Venus’s vlcan steam?
      A. Venus had ceans replaced by vlcanes.
      B. Venus has been t ht t supprt life.
      C. Venus has never had large amunts f water.
      D. Venus was rich in rcks withut water.
      10. What future research is suggested t better understand Venus?
      A. The extreme climate n Venus-like planets.
      B. The pssibility fr extreme micrrganisms.
      C. Sending mre spacecraft t map the surface f it.
      D. Cmparing the cmpsitin f Venus with ther planets.
      11. Which f the fllwing serves as the best title fr the text?
      A. Venus’s hidden secrets B. Early evlutin f Venus
      C. N life n “Earth’s evil twin” D. Mre hpe fr “life in the heaven”
      D
Think f micrplastics, and yu might think f the nes gathering in the wrld’s ceans. Hwever, they are als filling the air we breathe. Nw, it has been discvered that frests might be acting as a sink fr these airbrne micrplastics, ffering humanity yet anther crucial service.
The study has recently been published in Envirnmental Chemistry Letters, by a multi-institutinal research grup led by Prfessr Akane Miyazaki f Japan Wmen’s University. “We investigated airbrne micrplastics n knara ak tree leaves in a small frest in Tky,” says lead authr f the study, Natsu Sunaga. “We wanted t determine a dependable methd fr analyzing levels f these micrplastics n leaf surfaces, and hw exactly airbrne micrplastics becme trapped by leaves.”
The leaves were treated using three prcesses: Washing with ultrapure water, blending treatment with ultrasnic waves(超声波) and washing with ultrapure water, and treatment with an alkaline (碱性的) slutin f 10% ptassium hydrxide. “We fund that airbrne micrplastics strngly stick t the epicuticular wax (表皮蜡质) n the leaf surface,” explains Akane Miyazaki, senir authr. “In ther wrds, these particles gather when they stick t the waxy surface cating f leaves.”
The team discvered that the first tw treatments — washing with ultrapure water alne r in cmbinatin with ultrasnic waves — were nt enugh fr accurately determining the levels f airbrne micrplastics n frest leaves. Treatment with alkaline ptassium hydrxide, hwever, remved bth the epicuticular wax and the substances stuck t it, prving t be an effective methd. Crucially, previus studies that used nly the first tw methds may have underestimated the number f plastics stuck t leaf surfaces. “Based n ur findings, we estimate that the Quercus serrata frests f Japan trap abut 420 trillin airbrne micrplastics per year in their canpies,” states Sunaga.
Hw the gradual increase f these micrplastics will affect frest ecsystems, including ecsystem functins and sil health, is unknwn, and this will undubtedly be an area f further research. Fr nw, we knw that frests and even radside trees might reduce the amunt f plastic entering ur lungs, and fr that we have yet anther reasn t thank trees.
      12. Why did the researchers emply three prcesses t treat the leaves?
      A. T arrange tasks reasnably. B. T decide a reliable methd.
      C. T achieve the maximum effect. D. T celebrate a nvel technlgy.
      13. What des the underlined wrd “blending” in paragraph 3 mean?
      A. Ignring. B. Balancing.
      C. Cmbining. D. Prmting.
      14. What is a key advantage f using alkaline ptassium hydrxide?
      A. It cmpletes the prcess mre quickly.
      B. It preserves natural leaf clr effectively.
      C. It des nt require specialized equipment.
      D. It remves wax and stuck substances well.
      15. What will the fllwing research prbably fcus n?
      A. The benefits f frests fr human health.
      B. The applicatin f the new research results.
      C. The impact f micrplastics n frest ecsystems.
      D. The imprvement f micrplastic-remving ways.
