Did yu ever have t say “n” t smebdy? Such as a classmate wh asks t g t lunch with yu? New research suggests that, at least scially, a rejectin (拒绝) shuld nt include an aplgy. In ther wrds, saying yu are srry des nt make the persn being rejected feel any better. In fact, it might make the rejected persn feel wrse. That is surprising. Many peple cnsider it t be gd manners t say they are srry when they turn dwn a request.
Gili Freedman is ding sme related research at Dartmuth Cllege. Fr her research, she asked ver 1,000 peple t respnd t different examples f scial rejectin. In ne example, the researchers asked peple fr their reactin after a persn named Taylr asked t jin a cwrker wh went ut t lunch every Friday. And Taylr was tld “n”. But in sme cases, the persn rejecting Taylr ffered an aplgy. In ther cases, the peple ding the rejectin did nt say they were srry. Peple were asked hw they wuld feel if they were being turned dwn, just as Taylr was. Mst said they wuld be mre hurt by a rejectin with an aplgy than a rejectin withut an aplgy.
Freedman said the reasn is that aplgies make peple feel like they need t say that the rejectin was kay—even when they felt like it was nt kay. Rejectin withut an aplgy lets them express their feelings f disappintment, hurt r anger mre easily. Freedman als said that an aplgy ften makes the persn ding the rejectin feel better—even as it makes the persn being rejected feel wrse.
Her research deals nly with scial cmmunicatin. A business situatin might be very different. “If a manager rejects a jb interviewee r a bss must tell an emplyee that he r she is being fired frm a jb,” Freedman said, “reactins t aplgies may be different.”

      长难句分析
1.In ther wrds, saying yu are srry des nt make the persn being rejected feel any better.
分析:句中saying yu are srry 是动名词短语作主语, 后半句中being rejected是现在分词作后置定语,修饰 the persn。
2.Freedman said the reasn is that aplgies make peple feel like they need t say that the rejectin was kay—even when they felt like it was nt kay.
      分析:本句是复合句, said后面是宾语从句,句中make peple feel like是make sb.d sth.结构,后面that the rejectin was kay是作say的宾语。
