As a scientist, I have studied elephants in the 4 fr 30 years. I have seen that playing is a great way t spend time tgether, yet there is much mre t play than just fun and games. That’s als true fr us.
When humans and ther animals play, they are building trust with brthers, sisters, and friends. They learn hw far they can push their peers befre anyne becmes angry r physically hurt. That’s called “testing 5 .”
When playing with smene yunger, lder playmates smetimes pretend t be 6 r less skilled than they really are. This is called hlding back. It helps yunger players learn skills and 7 hw strng they are beynd what they can d with thers f their age.
Play ffers a safe space, where everyne knws the rules and can try new ways t mve, think, and respnd t thers. Rules matter. Thse wh break them 8 trust. Even crws remember cheaters and d nt trust them later.
