As fr the nvelist Yiyun Li, it was War and Peace that helped her get thrugh the tughest times; when she launched a virtual reading grup f Le Tlsty’s masterpiece in lckdwn, 3,000 peple signed up.
In recent years, a grwing bdy f research has backed up the idea that bks nt nly entertain, but als help us recver and grw. They ffer cmpaninship t the lnely, insight t the anxius, and release t thse wh feel trapped.
This feature has mtivated Ann Cleeves t turn her attentin t the ld lng-lasting biblitherapy. She then c-spnsred such a prgram in nrtheast England, wrking with public health teams. Biblitherapy is an apprach using bks and ther frms f literature t imprve a patient’s mental health. A review f several studies fund such prgrams have a lng-term effect n peple’s well-being.
But Cleeves has a brader idea in mind. Writing fr The Guardian, she described hw reading and writing fictin helped her understand her wn respnse and allwed her t escape int a different wrld. The reading caches will match their patients with apprpriate petry and nvels as well as nn-fictin based n patients’ cnditin, and will intrduce them t librarians and ther readers. After all, what’s uplifting t ne reader will seem twee (花哨) t anther and what ne finds unpleasant may be reassuring t the next.
Fr Cleeves, it is happy t see peple seek self-discvery in the wrld f bks. Sme may respnd t children’s classic The Secret Garden; thers will recgnize themselves in Tni Mrrisn’s nvels. An ancient idea has fund fresh resnance (共鸣).

Mst f Flrida is a flat peninsula (半岛) with water n three sides and huses built as clse t the shreline as pssible. Fr ne thing we are mre frequently the target f hurricanes than any ther state; fr anther, ur gegraphy makes us mre easily t be hurt by rising seas.
A news stry abut climate change in Flrida ppped up. Histrically, scientists believed mangrves (红树林) didn’t live farther nrth than Cedar Key, in the middle f Flrida’s Big Bend. But that’s nt the case anymre. Samantha Chapman, a bilgy prfessr wh’s been studying hw Flrida’s mangrves have been migrating (迁移), fund them up near the St Mary’s River, which frms the brder between Flrida and Gergia. It seems that they sn be marching thrugh Gergia and becming a thriving new cmpnent f castal habitats.
But a castal bilgist named Blair Witheringtn tk issue n the matter. The mangrves weren’t spreading int a new territry, he pinted ut. They were entering areas that had been classified as saltmarsh (盐沼), where the landscape was dminated by crdgrass. Saltmarsh and mangrve create very different habitats that attract a very different set f animals. “When ne cmmunity replaces the ther, this diversity is lst,” Witheringtn remarked. Changing the animals’ habitat has the ptential t influence the whle fd chain, making a widespread difference.
What was driving this? “Mangrves can survive a shrt freeze, but nt a prlnged, hard freeze. By cmbing thrugh the weather recrds kept by the state’s range juice industry, bilgists have been able t dcument that Flrida is having fewer prlnged hard freezes than it used t. Then the mangrves have adapted by expanding their range.” Samantha explained.
“They’ve adapted in anther way, t. Nt nly are the mangrves spreading int areas that nce were unfriendly t them, but they have als changed their life cycle t speed things up. Nrmally it takes them abut 15 years f grwth befre they start making seeds. Nw, as they get int these marshes, they’re prducing seeds when they’ re nly a cuple f years ld,” Samantha said.
The prblem with having t many mangrves by the sea is that climate change may verwhelm them. A study by the US Gelgical Survey said sea level rise culd wipe ut mangrves all alng the Flrida cast. S, here’s the questin we humans have t cnsider: Nature is finding ways t adapt t hw we’ve changed the climate. What are we ding t adapt t it? Or at least slw it dwn?
      46. What can we learn abut the state f Flrida?
      A. It culd be affected by high tides easily.
      B. Its gegraphy fuels shipbuilding industry.
      C. Its huses are built in a high-lying but flat area.
      D. It is ften hit by trnades and suffers huge lsses.
47 What is the news stry abut Flrida’s mangrves?
      A. They migrate t warmer regins.
      B. They are marching int a new habitat.
      C. They frm the brder between Flrida and Gergia.
      D. They are intrduced int Flrida t prevent flding.
      48. Which f the fllwing wuld Blair Witheringtn agree with?
      A. Saltmarsh is fragile and requires urgent prtectin.
      B. Flrida includes a rich diversity f natural habitats.
      C. The benefits f the mangrves utweigh their trubles.
      D. Everything in the ecsystem is cnnected cmplicatedly.
      49. What are the 4th and 5th paragraphs mainly abut?
      A. What mangrves had t face in their habitats.
      B. Whether mangrves had influence n ther plants.
      C. Hw mangrves adapted t the changing envirnment.
      D. Why mangrves had a different life cycle in marshes.
      50. What can we infer frm the last paragraph?
      A. Human beings are suppsed t wrship nature.
      B. It is urgent t grw mre mangrves alng castlines.
      C. Measures against mangrves’ migratin are far frm enugh.
      D. What we shuld d t stp the climate change is still up in the air.
Hw can we pssibly cpe with the large amunt f infrmatin abut virus spread, canceled plans and uncertainty abut the future? Sme peple are buried in the fear, anxiety and sadness, checking news sites and scial media cnstantly. Others try t be prevented frm knwing it all and ignre the utside wrld.
There's a third ptin, thugh. Rather than fully getting invlved in the negative r ignring it, we can d ur best t experience jy alngside everything else that is sad in the wrld. In fact, research that and thers have cnducted suggests that allwing the tw different emtins t cexist may actually benefit us in the lng run.
Dr. Jeff Larsen and his clleagues invented an expressin knwn as the “cactivatin mdel f mixed emtins”, and the basic idea is that we may be able t deal with, and learn frm negative emtins like sadness if we experience them cncurrently with psitive emtins like jy at the same time. Here, psitive emtins prvide a psychlgical buffer (缓冲),making it easier fr peple t deal with the things they dn't want t face.
The cmedian Mitch Hedberg prpsed ananalgythat captures this essence quite well, nting that it wuld be cl if yu culd eat a carrt with an nin ring and they wuld travel dwn t yur stmach. Then they wuld get there, and the carrt wuld say, “It's cl, he's with me.” Applied t ur emtinal lives, we culd d a better jb in digesting, prcessing gaining insight int the negative events in ur lives if we culd d s alngside the psitive.
Several years ag, my partner Jn Adler and I set ut t test this exact idea. Specifically, we lked at sample f adult vlunteers wh signed up fr weekly mental , health therapy sessins. Between each week, they reprted the feelings they were having and als tk a few questinnaires that were meant t assess their verall health. This design allwed us t examine hw different emtinal experiences wuld impact mental health in a lngitudinal fashin, ver the curse f 12 weeks.
It's wrth nting first that everyne seemed t imprve a bit as the weeks marched n:therapy helps and s des time. Mre t the pint, thugh, mixed emtins at ne time pint were psitively assciated with imprvements in psychlgical well-being at the next time pint. The mre f a mixture f, say, happiness and sadness smene experienced tday, the better feeling they'd experience next week.
Hwever, when we lked at mixed emtins that were experienced in a given week, they weren't assciated with imprved mental health in that same week.
The true benefit frm mixed emtins may nt happen immediately, but rather, likely happen smetime in the future.
      51. What des the authr recmmend peple d with a fld f bad news?
      A. Take n ntice f it at all.
      B. Make better plans t fight against it.
      C. Take in all f the negative emtins.
      D. Get invlved in the negative and enjy happiness as well.
      52. Which f the fllwing may Jeff Larsen agree with?
      A. Mixed emtins remain t be prved.
      B. The negative emtin is easy t deal with.
      C. The psitive emtin makes it easier fr peple t succeed.
      D. Mixed emtins allw peple t handle the negative better.
53 What des the underlined wrd “analgy” in paragraph 4 mean?
      A. Exhibitin.B. Prmtin.C. Similarity.D. Requirement.
      54. Why were lts f questins asked during the research?
      A. T measure the vlunteers health n the whle.
      B. T recrd what the vlunteers are experiencing.
      C. T treat the mental diseases f the adults.
      D. T ver turn the thery c activatin mdel f mixed emtins.
      55. What is the main idea f the passage?
      A. Ignre bad news cmpletely t make yu cutff frm utside and feel happy.
      B. Make yur negative emtins less severe by fcusing n psitive nes.
      C. Negative emtins will eventually benefit peple in the lng run.

“Cleverness is a gift while kindness is a chice. Gifts are easy---they're given after all. Chices can be hard.”
I gt the idea t start Amazn 16 years ag. I came acrss the fact that the Internet usage was grwing at 2300 percent per year. I'd never seen r heard f anything that grew that fast, and the idea f building an nline bkstre with millins f titles was very exciting t me. I had just turned 30, and I’d been married fr a year. I tld my wife that I wanted t quit my jb and g t d this crazy thing that prbably wuldn't wrk since mst start-ups dn’t and I wasn't sure what t expect. She tld me I shuld g fr it. As a yung by, I had been a garage inventr. I had always wanted t be an inventr, and she wanted me t fllw my passin.
I was wrking at a financial firm in New Yrk City with a bunch f very smart peple and a brilliant bss that I much admired. I went t my bss and tld him that I wanted t start a cmpany selling bks n the Internet. He tk me n a lng walk in Central Park, listened carefully t me and finally said,“That sunds like a really gd idea, but it wuld be an even better idea fr smene wh didn't already have a gd jb.”That lgic made sme sense t me,and he cnvinced me t think abut it fr 48 hurs befre making a final decisin. Seen in that light, it really was a difficult chice, but ultimately, I decided I had t give it a sht. I didn't think I wuld regret trying and failing. And I suspected that I wuld always be haunted by a decisin t nt try at all.
After much cnsideratin, I tk the less secure path t fllw my passin, and I'm prud f that chice. Fr all f us, in the end, we are ur chices.
