Once, during my summer holidays, my father was sick, but he worked in the rice field just the same, because there was so much to do. As I looked at his thin figure, crawling (缓慢移动) ahead of me, I thought of my own depressing future. I was tied to the land by job after backbreaking job, unlike other boys who had freedom to pursue happiness. Why were there people in the world who would never know what it was like to toil (苦干), and others, like me, who had been toiling ever since they were small boys, season after season, year after year? Why were some people sitting before electric fans or in air-conditioned rooms, while I was out of breath and sweating under the blazing sun? Why was there mud and more mud in front of me?
Only we farmers were willing to crawl, to assume the lowliest of positions in order to have a better harvest. Even a horse, when working for man, stands tall. I was suddenly consumed with great pity and great respect for poor farmers, and the focus of my attention began to extend beyond myself and my family. This was an important turning point in my life.
While resting beside a field one day, my brothers and I resolved to pursue useful knowledge and technology to help ourselves and other farmers improve our circumstances, and lighten our burden of labour. This resolve gave me strength so that when I went to university, lighten our burden of labour. This resolve gave me strength so that when I went to university, and later to the US on a scholarship, my spirit rose above personal hardships. Crawling in the mud had taught me to lake bleeding and sweating as part of my life, and not to be afraid in the face of difficulties. But what was more important was that I had learned the meaning of “You reap what you sow”.
Mother used to say, “Judge a man not by his face, but by his fields.” I appreciate more and more the meaning of these words. The land is dependable, as long as you are willing to toil on it. When the wind blew and the green rice plants moved like waves in a sea, stunningly beautiful, a deep sense of satisfaction swelled up (充满) in me.
I laboured hard in the simple, isolated countryside of my home, and I am proud of this. Although later I went into academic research, I shall always remember what working in the rice fields taught me: plant your feet firmly on the ground, work hard and you will be rewarded.

Why were there people in the world who would never know what it was like to toil (苦干), and others, like me, who had been toiling ever since they were small boys, season after season, year after year? Why were some people sitting before electric fans or in air-conditioned rooms, while I was out of breath and sweating under the blazing sun? Why was there mud and more mud in front of me?(当我看着他瘦弱的身影在我前面爬行时,我想到了我自己令人沮丧的未来。

When the wind blew and the green rice plants moved like waves in a sea, stunningly beautiful, a deep sense of satisfaction swelled up (充满) in me.(我越来越明白这句话的意思。
根据最后一段“I laboured hard in the simple, isolated countryside of my home, and I am proud of this. Although later I went into academic research, I shall always remember what working in the rice fields taught me: plant your feet firmly on the ground, work hard and you will be rewarded.(我在家乡这个简单、偏僻的乡村辛苦劳作,我为此感到自豪。虽然后来我从事了学术研究,但我永远记得在稻田里工作教给我的:脚踏实地,努力工作就会有回报)”可推知,作者以前的经验使他受益匪浅。故选B。

TikTok is setting a 60-minute daily screen time limit for users who are aged under 18. The video app, which is owned by Chinese firm ByteDance, said it is introducing the feature to encourage teens to manage their screen time. TikTok added that the new limit comes after it brought in a prompt (提示符) last year, which helped increase the use of their screen time tools by 234%.
Hitting the limit, users affected will receive a new passcode on the screen in their app to unlock extra time. Anyone who rejects the new 60-minute restriction and goes on to use the app for 100 minutes a day will receive a warning from TikTok to set their own screen time controls. Parents of children using the Family Pairing option on the app will also be able to set screen time limits, as well as access a dashboard (控制面板) which would give a breakdown of app usage.
Cormac Keenan, head of trust and safety at TikTok, said the company had worked with researchers in developing the new limits. “Since there’s no agreement on the ‘right’ amount of screen time, we consulted the current academic research and experts from the Digital Wellness Lab at Boston Children’s Hospital in choosing this limit,” he said.
Critics of the video app welcomed the screen time limit, but described it as the “tip of the iceberg” when it comes to TikTok’s response to young users’ exposure to the platform. “TikTok has won the race for the hearts and minds of 14 to 24-year-olds in the United States and the United Kingdom,” said Imran Ahmed, chief executive of the Center for Countering Digital Hate. “It is the one that needs to be dealt with most urgently.” Mr Ahmed said his centre’s research at the end of last year found that within minutes of opening a TikTok account, a 13-year-old girl user was receiving eating disorder and self-harm content in her feed. He called on the platform to focus its efforts not just on limiting screen time, but also to “clean up” feeds of harmful content to make it a “safe environment for children”.
46. In the first paragraph, TikTok is introducing the new screen time limit to________.
A. encourage in-person interactions B. increase the use of the platform
C. help teens stay in control of their use D. avoid criticism from concerned parents
47. What will happen when users under 18 reach their screen time limit?
A. Their parents will send them a warning message.
B. They will be locked out of their account for the day.
C. They must enter a passcode to continue using the app.
D. Their parents must access a dashboard to activate the app.
48. How did TikTok develop the new limits?
A. By seeking expert advice. B. By consulting the government.
C. By launching a survey among its users. D. By copying other social media platforms.
49. Which of the following best explains the underlined part in the last paragraph?
A. An insufficient action to keep teens safe on TikTok.
B. An noticeable part of network security problems.
C. An urgent issue waiting for TikTok to deal with.
D. An over reliance on TikTok among teens.
50. It can be inferred from the last paragraph that________.
A. TikTok exposes young users to mental disorder B. TikTok is dangerously addictive to teens
C. TikTok appeals to young users worldwide D. TikTok is popular but not safe enough for teens
46. C 47. C 48. A 49. A 50. D

根据第一段“TikTok is setting a 60-minute daily screen time limit for users who are aged under 18. The video app, which is owned by Chinese firm ByteDance, said it is introducing the feature to encourage teens to manage their screen time. TikTok added that the new limit comes after it brought in a prompt (提示符) last year, which helped increase the use of their screen time tools by 234%.(TikTok为18岁以下的用户设置了每天60分钟的屏幕时间限制。这款视频应用由中国字节跳动公司所有,该公司表示,推出这一功能是为了鼓励青少年管理他们的屏幕时间。TikTok补充说,新的限制是在去年引入提示符之后出台的,这使得他们的屏幕时间工具的使用率增加了234%)”可知,在第一段中,TikTok引入了新的屏幕时间限制,以帮助青少年控制自己的使用。故选C。
【47题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“Hitting the limit, users affected will receive a new passcode on the screen in their app to unlock extra time.(达到限制后,受影响的用户将在其应用程序的屏幕上收到一个新密码,以解锁额外的时间)”可知,当18岁以下的用户达到屏幕使用时间限制时,他们必须输入密码才能继续使用应用程序。

根据划线词上文“Critics of the video app welcomed the screen time limit”以及后文“when it comes to TikTok’s response to young users’ exposure to the platform”可知,这款视频应用的批评者对屏幕时间限制表示欢迎,但在TikTok对年轻用户接触该平台的反应方面,他们称这只是“保护青少年在TikTok上安全的行动不足”的其中一个问题。 故选A。

Have you ever come out of a steamy hot shower and tried to look at your reflection in the mirror when it’s completely steamed and fogged up? I often think that is how we tend to view our beauty—through fogged up mirrors. We are seeing ourselves but the picture isn’t exactly clear! The mirrors have been fogged up through different life experiences and memories as we have grown up, and now blend together to form our own definition of our beauty.
The first mirror is formed as a young child and is often based on what was said about us from our parents and those around us. I remember being told that I was a cute child, so that when I got a little older and was around six or seven and another child tried to tell me I was ugly- everything within me rose up against the statement because my self-belief in what my parents had said stood strong.
The second mirror is the mirror of adolescence, those formative years when we are pushed into the big wild world and out of the protection of home. As a teenager I went to a boarding school, and I was one of the only two black people in the entire school. Children being naturally curious, I felt like I was asked a million and one different questions about both my hair and skin tone- -and I don’t think there has ever been a time when I have been more acutely aware of my appearance, which in turn opened up the door for me to question how I looked and to thankfully embrace my differences.
The final mirror comes from socially constructed ideas of beauty. We are often faced with numerous images in the media, popular culture, society, peers and social media, which can create a false ideal of beauty in our eyes. We tend to compare ourselves to those ideals and use it as some sort of margin (差值) of measurement.
However, real beauty comes from within. It is acceptance of yourself, perceived flaws and all. You are a masterpiece, a unique blend of genes and life experiences. It’s essential to appreciate yourself like any other work of art or natural wonder, without judgement. Maybe it’s time to create a fourth mirror, a new mirror that is wiped clean and is minus the fog of comparisons, accusations, judgments and expectations.
51. What do the fogged-up mirrors represent according to the first paragraph?
A. The difficulties of seeing oneself in the mirror.
B. The various sources of beauty standards.
C. The unclear perceptions of one’s beauty.
D. The life experiences and memories.
52. How did the author react when someone called her ugly?
A. She felt embarrassed.
B. She completely denied it.
C. She sought comfort from her parents.
D. She questioned what her parents had said.
53. What can we learn about social constructed ideas of beauty?
A. They push teens out of home protection.
B. They arouse acute awareness of one’s appearance.
C. They may mislead people’s idea of beauty.
D. They are the exact measurement of beauty.
54. What does the author suggest as a possible fourth mirror?
A. A mirror not affected by external factors.
B. A mirror going against society’s expectations.
C. A mirror reflecting one’s childhood experiences.
D. A mirror showing the beauty ideals from social media.
55. The passage is mainly written to tell us that we should________.
A. bring happiness to those around us
B. keep our resolve despite obstacles
C. change ourselves to achieve an ideal
D. embrace our real inner beauty
C 52. B 53. C 54. A 55. D

Ren Sainan chanced upon the funeral industry in 2019. With a degree in e-commerce, she joined an online retailer that deals in funeral supplies after several failures in attempting to get a “normal” job upon graduation.
Encouraged by her family, colleagues and friends, Ren realized that what matters most is living for the moment and working for what she loves. Putting aside the opinions of others, she began to model for new shrouds (寿衣) for live-broadcasting as part of her daily job. Gradually, she found that working in the funeral industry is meaningful and that everyone has a story.
One night during the Spring Festival, Ren received a call. A girl sobbed, asking whether she had a green burial suit, as she was preparing for the funeral of her father who used to be a soldier at Jiayu Pass, safeguarding China’s northwestern frontier. He had a deep affection for the color green.
Searching through piles of clothes at the warehouse, Ren failed to find the color. Moved by the daughter and the father, she decided to make a green-colored suit along with a tailor at the company.
In the beginning, Ren was afraid of telling her mother about working as a model and designer for burial clothes. “After I accepted myself in this job, I talked about it with my mother. Her first reaction was ‘you should resign,’” Ren said. She made a trip home in Pingdingshan, a two-hour drive from Zhengzhou where she works, in hope to impress her mother with various products. “She softened her tone as these designs upended her perception of saying goodbye to the world,” she said.
In traditional Chinese culture, the discussion of death is taboo (禁忌的), and the shrouds, along with other funeral supplies, are things people avoided talking about in daily life. And even with good employment opportunities, people were reluctant to work as funeral directors.
As a shroud model, Ren’s presentation has changed people’s fixed images of the funeral supplies. While amazed at the diverse and personalized development of the funeral industry, Chinese netizens have also expressed their admiration for Ren’s job.
Aging, sickness, and death are common states of life. It might be, in a sense, lucky to have an opportunity to experience the range of human emotions from joy to grief, from despair to hope.
