After studying in her hmeland the United States and then Australia, she mved t Mzambique, where she has becme a leading vice in the prtectin f ur ceans.
Early n, Andrea’s research fcused n mantas (蝠鲼科类鱼). Mantas have the largest brain f any fish, relative t bdy size, and thse bdies can be mre than 25 feet acrss. They are harmless t humans and ften invite divers t play with them. Her wrk has included identifying new manta species and creating genetic (基因) libraries f these giant animals.
Overfishing, habitat destructin, and climate change have caused the ppulatins f mantas and cuntless ther marine species t fall quickly. But mantas are als specifically targeted fr use in medicine. In 2019, Andrea led the scientific assessment that updated the giant manta’ s status t be endangered n the IUCN Red List. The wrk reflected bth her prfessinal knwledge n these giants and her rising status in the field f marine prtectin.
Andrea and like-minded shark expert Simn Pierce c-funded the Marine Megafauna Fundatin (MMF) in Mzambique. The rganizatin has grwn int an internatinal charity and research netwrk t prtect cean habitats wrldwide. Laughter, in respnse t funny events, actually takes a lt f wrk, because it activates many areas f the brain: areas that cntrl mtr, emtinal, cgnitive and scial prcessing. Researchers nw appreciate laughter’s pwer t imprve physical and mental well-being (健康).
Peple begin laughing when they are babies, which helps develp muscles and upper bdy strength. Laughter is nt just breathing. It relies n cmplex cmbinatins f facial muscles, ften invlving mvement f the eyes, head and shulders. By activating the neural (神经的) pathways f emtins like jy, laughter can imprve yur md and make yur physical respnse t stress less intense.
A gd sense f humr and the laughter that fllws depend n an abundant measure f scial intelligence and wrking memry resurces. Laughter, like humr, typically cmes frm recgnizing the ddness f a situatin. Yu need t mentally reslve the surprising behavir r event—therwise yu wn’t laugh; yu might just be cnfused instead. Inferring the intentins f thers and taking their perspective can increase the intensity f the laughter and amusement yu feel. T “get” a jke r humrus situatin, yu need t be able t see the lighter side f things. Yu must believe that ther pssibilities besides the literal meaning exist.
Laughter creates bnds with thers. Linguist Dn Nilsen pints ut that laughs seldm happen when alne, supprting their strng scial rle. Fr example, public speakers and cmedians try t get a laugh t make audiences feel psychlgically clser t them. By practicing a little laughter each day, yu can imprve scial skills that may nt cme naturally t yu. When yu laugh in respnse t humr, yu share yur feelings with thers and learn frm the risks that yur respnse will be accepted by thers and nt be rejected.
Laughter als prduces psitive emtins. These feelings—like amusement, happiness and jy—build resiliency (复原力) and increase creative thinking. They increase subjective well-being and life satisfactin. Researchers find that these psitive emtins experienced with humr and laughter are related t appreciating the meaning f life.
8. Hw des laughter help imprve ur well-being?
A. It helps with breathing.B. It activates varius brain areas.
C. It affects facial muscles.D. It imprves physical strength.
9. What is necessary fr experiencing laughter accrding t Paragraph 3?
A. Having a high level f intelligence.B. Maintaining a general utlk n life.
C. Discvering the strangeness f a situatin.D. Understanding the literal meaning f a jke.

A. T shw their wisdm f life.B. T demnstrate their presentatin style.
C T make the presentatin mre challenging.D. T create psychlgical clseness with listeners.
11. What is the authr’s main purpse in writing the text?
A. T stress the psitive effects f laughter.B. T prvide a general definitin f laughter.
C. T highlight the scial imprtance f laughter.D. T instruct readers n hw t practice laughter.

Researchers have set a new recrd fr data transmissin. Using ne small cmputer chip, they culd mve 1. 84 petabits f data per secnd. That equals 122 millin Netflix mvies streaming at the same time.
The Danish team reprted this new achievement in Nature Phtnics n Octber 20th,2022. These researchers tk advantage f a special phenmenn f light called ptical frequency cmb (光学频率梳). T make ne, yu take a laser and shine it thrugh a special passage. Out pps a carefully-crafted rainbw, with all f its clrs spaced ut evenly.
When a laser (激光) shines thrugh a device called a mdulatr (调制器), the mdulatr transfrms packets f data frm their digital frm int patterns f light. Then it cntrls the laser’s light t create these patterns. One pattern might invlve turning n and ff rapidly. The patterns then zip alng fiber ptic cables (光纤电缆) at the speed f light. At the ther end, a receiver changes them back int digital data.
Mst fiber ptic cables have just ne cre-a single pipe thrugh which that light can travel. T send much data at nce, yu have t fit multiple rays f light int that ne pipe. T travel tgether withut messing up each ther’s data, the light rays must have unique wavelengths. Nw, a single laser shining int a special type f chip wuld split int many different wavelengths. This happens because the light travels arund a tiny ring made f a special material. The ring the Danish team used created 223 different wavelengths-r a rainbw f 223 clrs!
The Danish grup als used a new type f fiber ptic cable that cntains 37 separate pipes. Each can carry the same wavelengths as the thers withut interference (干扰). S the team started with 223 different clrs, and then split each clr 37 ways. The grand ttal was 8,251 different rays f light. Each ray gt sent thrugh a mdulatr that cntrlled the light t carry data.
Such a high rate may be useful in data centers even sner because f the “energy and cst savings” it prmises, says Bill Crcran, a physicist at Mnash University in Melburne, Australia. The new technlgy uses fewer lasers than current methds, which makes it mre energy-efficient. And that culd help lessen the Internet’s climate impact.
12. What can we learn abut ptical frequency cmb in Paragraph 2?
A. It is the principle f digital cmmunicatin.B. It is the base f the data-mving technlgy.
C. It gave the researchers inspiratin fr the chip.D. It reminded the researchers f the use f lasers.
13. What des Paragraph 3 mainly talk abut?
A. Hw digital data is carried.B. Hw a mdulatr is created.
C. Hw fiber ptic cables wrk.D. Hw a laser cntrls light.
14. What is a must fr data t travel alng a light cable withut interference?
A. A lng enugh fiber ptic cable.B. Different lasers shining in cables.
C. Light rays with different wavelengths.D. Sufficient tiny rings made f a special material.
15 Why can the new technlgy be used befre lng?
A. It uses fewer mdulatrs.B. It is cheaper t maintain.
C. It prmises larger future prfits.D. It is mre envirnmental-friendly.
