and curisity.
I decided t g tward the mst difficult students with additinal kindness, rather than backing away in
frustratin when my frmer attempts t change them failed. The changes in my educatin were faint yet definite. I
had always taken students aside when they made pr decisins. But my new plan asked questins that were free f
sclding r shame, and mre gentle and sincere. Are yu feeling all right? Is smething bthering yu? What
happened last night? These questins rarely led t any big “ah ha” mments, but I treated each repeated
cnversatin with patience.
Althugh my lve plan was designed t imprve my students’ schl experience, it cmpletely imprved mine
as well. It wrked magic n my relatinships with students and energised me fr the schl day. My difficult
students represented puzzles t slve and relatinships t imprve, nt frightening truble that wuld exhaust my
jy. Letting g f the assumptin that their behavirs must be purpsive chices, I was able t avid feelings f
resentment (怨恨) when my students made mistakes. I felt mre peaceful and less angry.

The gvernment f the Marshall Islands has prtected a huge area f cean arund tw remte atlls (偏远环

In 2023, scientists frm Natinal Gegraphic’ s Pristine Seas prject wrked with experts in the Marshall

The underwater life near the atlls includes different kinds f fish and many deepsea sharks. The researchers

France has banned smartphne use in primary and secndary schls since 2018, arguing that it helps children
fcus, limits scial-media use, and reduces cyberbullying. The Netherlands fllwed in January 2024, and Hungary
sn after. Britain is nw cnsidering a similar ban. But will such measures imprve students’ mental health?
The prblem is evident. A 2021 reprt frm America’s surgen general fund that between 2009 and 2019,
第 6页/共 12页
persistent hpelessness amng high-schl students increased by 40%, while the number cnsidering suicide rse
by 36%. Nearly half f mental-health disrders that emerge in adlescence persist int adulthd. Smartphnes,
ften seen as the cause, prvide easy access t scial media, where cmparisn, cyberbullying, and addictin are
almst everywhere. Yet prving a direct link between smartphne use and declining mental health is tricky.
The challenge lies in nuance (微妙之处). A smartphne is a tl, used fr everything frm educatinal games
t dmscrlling (刷负面新闻) n scial media. Its effects n well-being depend nt nly n cntent but als n
the age and develpmental stage f the user. Research by Amy Orben at Cambridge suggests that scial-media use
is particularly harmful during puberty’s (青春期) critical develpmental windws — ages 11-13 fr girls, and
14-15 fr bys.
Banning smartphnes in schls, hwever, may nt be the slutin sme expect. A recent Lancet study by
Victria Gdyear fund n significant difference in mental well-being between students in schls with strict
phne bans and thse with relaxed plicies. The real issue, researchers argue, is verall screen time, nt just schl
use.
T make matters wrse, scial-media firms refuse t share detailed user data, frcing researchers t rely n
simple measures like screen time. Until a clearer picture emerges, plicymakers risk presenting slutins withut
fully identifying the prblem.
12. Why is it difficult t prve a link between smartphnes and mental health?
A. The effects f smartphnes vary amng users.
B Mst students refuse t participate in studies.
C. The use f smartphnes is nt cntent-based.
D. Schls d nt track phne usage accurately.
13. Why might banning phnes in schls fail t imprve mental health?
A. Parents wuld ppse the new regulatins.
B. Students wuld switch t using tablets instead.
C. Scial media use extends beynd schl hurs.
D. Cyberbullying ccurs nly utside f schl.
14. What is the authr’s attitude twards the plicymakers?
A. Critical. B. Indifferent. C. Supprtive. D. Annyed.
15. What is the best title f the passage?
第 7页/共 12页
A. Shuld Schls Ban Smartphnes t Imprve Fcus and Learning?
B. Will Banning Smartphnes in Schls Imprve Students’ Mental Health?
C. Des T Much Screen Time Harm Students’ Emtinal Well-being?
D. Are Scial Media Platfrms the Main Cause f Student Anxiety?
