Ants have the ability t smell ut cancerus cells (癌细胞) in humans, which has been discvered by a new study, suggesting that they culd be used t find cancer in the future. Researchers frm the French Natinal Center fr Scientific Research (CNRS) discvered that sme ants have a well develped sense f smell. “Hwever, mre tests must be carried ut befre they culd be used in hspitals,” The team said. Althugh mre tests are needed, this discvery culd lead t new ways f detecting cancer early.
The scientists did tests with 36 ants, smelling cells in the tan. first, they let the ants smell sme cancerus human cells. Every time the ants smelt cancerus cells, they were rewarded with sugar slutin (糖液). In the secnd step, the ants were put int tw different smells. One was a new smell f healthy cells and the secnd was still the smell f the cancerus cells. Once the ants fund the cancerus cells successfully, the researchers made them smell different cancerus cells. As such, the scientists fund that ants culd discriminate (辨别) between cancerus and healthy cells and between tw cancerus cells.
Hw accurate are ants in discriminating cancer cells? Studies have shwn that trained ants can discriminate cancer cells with an accuracy rate (准确率) f abut 95% t 99%. Other studies have shwn that Frmica Fusca ants (丝光褐林蚁) can learn t discriminate cancer samples in just 30 minutes.
This isn’t the first time that scientists have used the animals’ sense f smell t find cancerus cells. “Dgs have lng been praised fr their pwerful nses,” the researchers nted. “But training dgs t discriminate cancer cells usually takes mnths r even a full year—a time-cnsuming prcess. Insects, hwever, have clear advantages: they are inexpensive, they can be easily raised, and can master such tasks with far fewer training times. Hundreds f them can learn t pick ut certain smells quickly and currency, making them a mre practical chice fr this kind f wrk,” the researchers pinted ut.
“The study shws that ants can learn new things really fast,” the researchers added. “Besides finding cancer cells, this training methd can be used fr many ther jbs. Fr example, it might help ants find dangerus things in places like disaster areas r detect early signs f ther illnesses. Because ants learn quickly, they culd be useful fr tasks that need a sharp sense f smell--whether it’s sptting danger r helping dctrs check fr diseases in the future.”
This study shws hw nature inspires science. Tiny creatures like ants, which we ften ignre might hld secrets t slving big human prblems. Imagine a wrld where hspitals use ants t check fr cancer in minutes instead f waiting fr lab results! Of curse, there’s still a lt t learn. Scientists need t make sure this methd wrks perfectly befre it can be used in real life. But ne thing is clear: never underestimate the pwer f small things!
