Being left paralyzed(瘫痪的) has not kept one French hip hop artist from making music. For many years Guilhem Gallart was a successful record producer and recording artist. Better known as“Pone”, he helped make the sound of hip hop in France in the 1990s and early 2000s and enjoyed a number of hits with his group Fonky Family.
In 2015, Pone was diagnosed with ALS. ALS is a disease that results in the loss of muscle control, affecting the ability to move, speak, eat and breathe without help. There's no cure for ALS. It has left Pone dependent on a machine to breathe, and unable to move anything but his eyes.
But technology has reopened possibilities for Gallart, who is in his 40s. With the help of the certain software, his eye movements are tracked and actions of a mouse are imitated, and as a consequence, he is able to compose and write, as well as speak with a computer-generated voice.
“I have rediscovered the Pone that I knew before,” said his wife Wahiba. “And even stronger than he was before.”
The effort has resulted in a mini album of dreamlike electro beats, Listen and Donate, released in June 2021 which hopes to raise funds for an organization,Trakadom. The charity was set up together with two doctors. Its aim is to train more care-takers and help chronic(慢性的) patients to receive care at home. “Talking about this with doctors, nurses and care takers, I saw there was a serious lack of training, and that many of them wanted that chance," he said.
“If there's a message, it's that anything is possible,”said Pone.

When a disaster hits a place, it is important that assistance can be provided right away. The first responders(反应人员)may not be firemen or doctors but those who live in the area.
The Community Emergency Response Team(CERT,社区紧急反应小组)is a volunteer programme in the USA. It trains people to respond to emergencies in their communities. Volunteers learn basic skills such as fire safety and prevention, search and rescue(营救),and simple medical treatment. After training, these volunteers are able to help their neighbours in the disaster.
The CERT can make a huge difference to a community. During the early period of a disaster, people face serious challenges. They may be trapped and get badly hurt. Blocked(阻塞的)roads prevent emergency services from reaching the neighbourhood in time. But the CERT can take action and provide help right away.
In 1985,untrained volunteers saved over 800 lives in the Mexico earthquake. Sadly, many volunteers died in the process. This was a high price to pay, but it could have been avoided through training. Then Los Angeles started the first CERT programme in 1986,and many cities followed the lead.
Now CERT programmes are popular in the USA, and over 600,000 people have received the training. Every year, local CERT trainers give a series of lessons. Then throughout the year, they help volunteers practise skills. People of all ages can take part in the CERT programme. There are even special programmes for teenagers, college students and people in workplaces. Many countries have similar programmes. Lots of people take part in the programme because they believe that everyone in a community has a role in disaster preparedness(做好准备).By working properly as a team,CERT volunteers protect not only themselves but also people around them when disasters happen.
( )32. What does the underlined word“assistance”mean?
