Grwing up, I disliked writing. It was the last thing I wanted t d and it’s ne reasn why I pursued science in the first place. In high schl, I hated writing essays. Fr hurs, I stared at blank pages, trying t turn my disrdered thughts int fluent sentences and I ften received papers marked with lts f crrectins. I began t wnder if I was simply nt cut ut fr writing. And that was OK. I didn’t have t be gd at everything.
I fcused instead n my lve fr math and science. I tk cmfrt there, knwing bjective truth culd be fund if I searched methdically. In cllege, I studied engineering and jined a research lab t gain hands-n experience. My first prject was t imprve the efficiency f a magnetic cmpnent. Despite initial disappinting results, I cntinued thrugh many designs. Eventually, we develped a design that halved energy lsses. I was delighted — until my prfessr tld me t write that research paper.
I knew that if I wanted t becme a researcher, I wuld need t spend time penning papers. But I was scared f failing. In a panic, I asked a graduate student in my lab fr help. We set a gal fr the paper, and I carefully wrte an utline. But when I asked him fr feedback (反馈), I sn fund the paper cvered in red marks. He explained that red didn’t mean I was a bad writer. Writing isn’t a ne-and-dne thing. It requires revising yur wrk, ften several times. Suddenly it ccurred t me, “Hadn’t I dne the same thing when I was searching fr an efficient design?”
I plished my paper’s utline int sentences and paragraphs, guided by feedback. Thugh my first draft wasn’t perfect, with help, I enjyed the prcess f imprving it. Writing has since becme ne f my favrite parts f research, helping me rganize my thughts. I’ve even started writing ppular science articles, which I never culd have imagined during my early struggles with essays.

In the Mnarch Butterfly Bisphere Reserve, millins f mnarch butterflies find shelter in the yamel fir frests after a difficult migratin frm Canada and the United States dwn t Mexic fr the winter. Nw, as rising temperatures, drughts, and disease threaten the frests f the mnarch reserve, scientists are hping t help these trees migrate.
“We’re ding smething different,” says Sáenz-Rmer, a researcher f the reserve. “If we dn’t d this, the trees in the mnarch reserve are ging t die.” By 2090, the reserve’s frest habitats are expected t deterirate, as temperatures warm. Using a technique called assisted migratin, researchers might be able t mve these trees t the nearby vlcan.
Frests mve naturally; they mve in many directins and altitudes as climate changes. Assisted migratin helps the frest mve mre quickly than it wuld d s naturally. Yu cllect seeds frm a place with a specific climate, like the mnarch reserve, and mve them t an area that will have a similar climate in the future, explains Sáenz-Rmer.
The experiment began in 2017, when Sáenz-Rmer and his team gathered seeds frm yamel fir trees in the Mnarch Butterfly Bisphere Reserve at varius altitudes. Fr tw years, the plants grew in a shade huse and then fr anther year in a nursery at arund 9,800 feet t help them adapt t the altitude. Then, in 2021, they planted the yung trees under “nurse plants”, which prtected them frm difficult cnditins. In 2023, six years after planting the seeds, they fund that at tw f thse heights, 11,800 and 12,400 feet, nearly 70 percent f the yung trees had survived even at the higher altitude.
“These types f experiments are tremendusly imprtant,” said Sally Aitken, wh wasn’t invlved in the study. “Hwever, assisted migratin utside f a tree’s nrmal range cmes with cncerns. Oyamel firs dn’t nrmally grw at this height n Nevad de Tluca’s slpes. Mving a species culd have unintended eclgical cnsequences fr ther species present in that ecsystem.” Aitken added.
Fr nw, in Mexic, Sáenz-Rmer hpes this new study cnvinces cnservatinists and gvernment fficials that assisted migratin can establish new ptential wintering sites fr the mnarch butterflies.
      28. What des the underlined wrd “deterirate” in paragraph 2 mean?
      A. Get wrse. B. Grw larger.C. Maintain. D. Imprve.
      29. Which f the fllwing best describes the experiment?
      A. Cstly.B. Successful.C. Cntrversial.D. Risky.
      30. What did Aitken think f assisted migratin?
      A. It culd benefit all species. B. It culd change the lcal weather.
      C. It culd have eclgical risks.D. It culd definitely save Mnarch Butterflies.
      31. What is the text mainly abut?
      A. The migratin f the yamel fir frests.
      B. A way t save mnarch butterflies’ habitats.
      C. The threats Mnarch butterflies’ survival is facing.
      D. The imprtance f the Mnarch Butterfly Bisphere Reserve.

A new study frm Nttingham Trent University (NTU) indicates that peple wh are mre facially expressive are generally mre likable and scially successful. The research, which analyzed ver 1,500 natural cnversatins, suggests that cmplex facial muscle mvements can strengthen scial bnds and imprve scial interactins.
In the initial phase, researchers engaged with 52 participants in vide calls designed t get a range f everyday situatins, such as humr, embarrassment and cnflict. The participants were further challenged t maintain a still face while their partners attempted t stimulate mvement, testing their ability t cntrl facial expressins.
Fllwing these interactins, the participants recrded shrt vides, where they aimed t achieve specific scial gals, like disagreeing with smene but withut being disliked. These clips f vides were then rated by ver 170 independent bservers, assessing the readability f the emtins and expressins displayed.
The researchers applied the Facial Actin Cding System (FACS), a methd fr measuring facial muscle activity, t evaluate each participant’s expressivity (表现能力). Afterwards, the study extended t analyze an existing database f natural vide cnversatins between 1,456 strangers, where the participants rated their cnversatinal partners’ likability. The study revealed that individuals wh were mre expressive were mre likable by bth independent bservers and their cnversatin partners. Additinally, these expressive individuals were easier t read and mre skillful at using facial behavirs t achieve their scial gals.
“This is a study t examine facial expressin in real-wrld interactins,” said the study’s lead authr, Eithne Kavanagh. “Our evidence shws that facial expressivity is related t psitive scial utcmes. It suggests that mre expressive peple are mre successful at attracting scial partners and building relatinships. It als culd be imprtant in cnflict reslutin.” The research highlights the significant rle which facial expressins play in successful scial interactins.
      32. Hw did the researchers examine the participants’ ability t cntrl facial expressins?
      A. By asking them t make cmplex facial muscle mvements.
      B. By asking them t watch humrus vides and keep a still face.
      C. By having them use facial behavirs t achieve their scial gals.
      D. By having their partners try t make them prduce facial mvements.
      33. What were the participants asked t d after the first stage?
      A. Rate the vides f ther participants.
      B. Engage in further scial interactins.
      C. Assess the readability f their wn emtins.
      D. Recrd shrt vides under specific cnditins.
      34. What can we learn abut the FACS?
      A. It is a tl t assess facial muscle activity.
      B. It decides the scial success f individuals.
      C. It imprves the likability f facial expressins.
      D. It is a methd fr prmting participants’ likability.
      35. What can be the best title fr the text?
      A. FACS: A New Methd fr Scial Science
      B. Facial Expressins: Imprtant fr Scial Success
      C. The Develpment f Facial Muscle Mvements
      D. The Way t Be Likable and Scially Successful

At the tp, the hern slept peacefully, its white feathers glwing in the mnlight. Instead f shcking it, Emma whispered sftly, “Yu’re safe with me.” She gently carried it dwn, and placed it in a small cage she had prepared earlier.
Befre dawn, Emma returned t the farm huse quietly, hlding the cage cvered with her jacket. She hid the bird in the barn, making sure it had fd and water. After the man left fr several days, Emma released the hern deep in the wds, watching as it sared int the sky. Thugh she culd have used the mney, her heart felt lighter knwing the bird was free. Her grandma, learning what had happened, hugged her tightly and said, “Sme things are mre precius than mney.”
