The chicks f puffins hatch in nests n high sea cliffs. Abut six weeks after hatching they will fly frm their
nests and spend several years at sea until they return t land t breed. Puffins have histrically fund the cean by

But because f lights frm twns near where the puffins nest, they can get lst. Instead f heading ut t sea t
fish and grw strng, the birds end up heading inland. They wander n the streets, where cars, cats, and buildings
pse dangerus bstacles. S, many residents spend a few weeks in August and September cllecting baby puffins
that have crashed int twn and then gently thrwing them int the cean.
Accrding t Erpur Hansen, a lcal eclgist, the average puffin ppulatin in Iceland has decreased by 70
percent ver the last 30 years. “While light pllutin may be the mst visible and easily blamed issue, what’s
restricting puffin numbers mst dramatically are rising sea surface temperatures,” he explains. T further wrsen
