The winner f this year’s Pritzker Architecture Prize, annunced n Tuesday, is Liu Jiakun. The prize, established in 1979, is cmmnly regarded as “the Nbel Prize f architecture.”
Liu Jiakun was brn in 1956. His architectural adventure started, playing in the crridrs f the large brick hspital where his mther wrked as a dctr. “Frm the rftp, I culd see the whle city,” Liu recalled in an interview, describing hw these early experiences shaped his perspective n urban spaces and cmmunity life. After graduating in 1982, Liu’s career tk a special path. While wrking fr a state-wned architecture firm in Tibet, he als develped a strng passin fr writing. “I had tw identities then,” he explained. “By day I was an architect, by night a writer.” This creative life wuld later prfundly influence his architectural philsphy.
Liu’s designs skillfully cmbine traditinal Chinese elements with mdern functinality. His West Village cmmercial cmplex in Chengdu(2015)is a typical example f this apprach, transfrming an entire city blck int a lively public space with buildings, bike paths and pedestrian walkways that reexplain traditinal Chinese urban planning fr mdern needs.

NASA’s Perseverance rver(火星车)cntinues its pineering explratin f Mars’Jezer Crater, cllecting rck samples that may fundamentally change ur understanding f the Red Planet and the ptential fr life utside the earth. Since landing in 2021, the car-sized rver has been carefully dcumenting Mars’gelgy while gathering sealed samples fr eventual return t Earth.
Scientists believe Mars was nce a mild wrld with flwing water and a prtective magnetic field(磁场), which was suitable fr the survival f living things. “Arund three billin years ag, smething disastrus happened,” explains Ken Farley, Perseverance’s prject scientist. “The planet’s magnetic field disappeared, slar wind tk away the atmsphere frcefully, and Mars became the uninhabitable wrld we see tday.”
Perseverance’s primary missin is t search fr signs f ancient tiny living rganisms. The rver is equipped with precise instruments t analyze rcks and sil, but its mst imprtant task is cllecting pure and undamaged samples fr detailed study n Earth. “Each sample tube we fill culd hld answers t questins abut Martian histry and whether life ever existed there,”says Meenakshi Wadhwa, lead scientist fr the Mars Sample Return prgram.
In June 2024, NASA’s Curisity rver discvered yellw sulfur crystals—an exciting find. Hwever, nly Perseverance can cllect samples fr return t Earth, making its missin uniquely valuable.
The ambitius Mars Sample Return prgram, a cperatin between NASA and ESA, aims t retrieve these samples by the early 2030s. The prcess invlves multiple spacecraft wrking in sequence t launch the samples frm Mars’ surface and safely deliver them t Earth. Once here, scientists wrldwide will study them using advanced labratry techniques unavailable n the rver itself.
“These samples may hld clues nt just abut Mars, but abut hw planets evlve and hw life begins,” Wadhwa emphasizes. As Perseverance cntinues its jurney acrss the Martian landscape, each new discvery brings humanity clser t answering ne f ur mst prfund questins: Are we alne in the universe?

A remarkable develpment in electrnic skin(e-skin)technlgy may change hw humans interact with digital devices. Researchers at Helmhltz-Zentrum Dresden-Rssendrf have created a super thin, transparent e-skin which can precisely detect and track magnetic fields, pening pssibilities ranging frm underwater smartphne peratin t enhanced virtual reality experiences.
Traditinal e-skins, while innvative, have been limited by their dependence n multiple sensrs and large pwer surces. “Previus designs were like smartphne tuchscreens with cuntless individual sensrs,” explained Dr. Denys Makarv, lead researcher at the Institute f In Beam Physics. “Our majr breakthrugh was develping a whle system that imitates hw human skin actually wrks. This is mainly what sets it apart frm previus e-skins.”
The new e-skin cnsists f a remarkably thin membrane(膜), which is bth flexible and breathable. Unlike earlier versins that culd cause discmfrt t real skin, this design allws air and misture t pass thrugh, making it cmfrtable t wear. The key innvatin is a magnetsensitive functinal layer that serves as a single, cntinuus sensr surface.
Pavl Makushk, the study’s first authr, cmpares the technlgy t human bilgy,“Just as ur skin sends all tuch signals thrugh nerves t the brain, ur e-skin uses ne central prcessr t interpret magnetic signals acrss its entire surface.” This efficient design significantly reduces energy cnsumptin cmpared t cnventinal e-skins.
The research team adapted principles frm medical tmgraphy(影像)t achieve unheard-f precisin in lcating magnetic signals. This apprach vercame previus limitatins in sensitivity that had prevented similar develpments.
Lking ahead, the researchers imagine this technlgy bridging the gap between human and machine interactin. “It creates a cmpletely new cmmunicatin channel,” Makarv nted, emphasizing hw the e-skin’s magnetic sensing avids disturbance frm ther electrnics. As develpment cntinues, we may sn see this innvative e-skin integrated int everything frm wearable tech t advanced rbtics.
