Large language mdels (LLMs) wrk well because they’re s large. But this pwer cmes at a cst. Training a mdel with hundreds f billins f parameters (参数) takes huge cmputatinal resurces. A single query (查询) t ChatGPT cnsumes abut 10 times as much energy as a single Ggle search.
In respnse, sme researchers are nw shifting t small language mdels (SLMs) . IBM, Ggle, Micrsft and OpenAI have all recently released small language mdels (SLMs) that use nly a few billin parameters.
Small mdels are nt used as general-purpse tls like their larger cusins. But they can d well in specific, narrwly defined tasks, such as summarizing cnversatins, answering patient questins as a health care chatbt and gathering data in smart devices. “Fr many tasks, an 8 billin parameter mdel is actually pretty gd, ” said Zic Klter, a cmputer scientist at Carnegie Melln University. They can als run n a laptp r cellphne, instead f a huge data center.
Large mdels ften extract raw training data frm the Internet, and this data can be disrganized, messy and hard t prcess. But these large mdels can then generate a high-quality data set that can be used t train a small mdel. The apprach adpted by the researchers gets the larger mdel t effectively pass n its training, like a teacher giving lessns t a student. “The reasn why SLMs achieve excellent perfrmance is that they use thse data instead f the messy stuff, ” Klter said.
Researchers have als explred ways t create small mdels by starting with large nes and trimming them dwn. One methd, knwn as pruning, was inspired by a real-life neural (神经的) netwrk — the human brain, which gains efficiency. Pruning can help researchers fine-tune a small language mdel fr a particular task r envirnment.
Smaller mdels ffer an inexpensive way t test nvel ideas. Fewer parameters may increase their transparent reasning. “Small mdels allw researchers t experiment with lwer risks. ” said Leshem Chshen, an MIT-IBM Watsn AI Lab scientist.
32. What advantage des SLMs have ver LLMs accrding t the first tw paragraphs?

【34题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“Large mdels ften extract raw training data frm the Internet, and this data can be disrganized, messy and hard t prcess. But these large mdels can then generate a high-quality data set that can be used t train a small mdel. The apprach adpted by the researchers gets the larger mdel t effectively pass n its training, like a teacher giving lessns t a student. “The reasn why SLMs achieve excellent perfrmance is that they use thse data instead f the messy stuff, ” Klter said.(大模型通常从互联网上提取原始训练数据,而这些数据可能是杂乱无章、难以处理的。但这些大模型随后可以生成一个高质量的数据集,可用于训练小模型。研究人员采用的方法让大模型有效地传递其训练成果,就像老师给学生上课一样。科尔特说:“小语言模型取得优异性能的原因是它们使用的是那些数据,而不是那些杂乱的数据”)”可知,小语言模型表现好是因为使用了大模型生成的高质量数据。故选B。
【35题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Smaller mdels ffer an inexpensive way t test nvel ideas. Fewer parameters may increase their transparent reasning. “Small mdels allw researchers t experiment with lwer risks. ” said Leshem Chshen, an MIT-IBM Watsn AI Lab scientist.(更小的模型提供了一种低成本的方式来测试新想法。更少的参数可能会增加它们推理的透明度。麻省理工学院 - IBM 沃森人工智能实验室的科学家莱舍姆・乔申说:“小模型让研究人员能够以更低的风险进行实验”)”可知,莱舍姆・乔申认为小模型具有成本低、推理透明度高、实验风险低等优点,所以他对小语言模型持支持的态度。故选C。
