In the summer f 1969, six-year-ld Mike Massimin watched wide-eyed n the televisin as Neil Armstrng tk the first step n the mn. He immediately made his mm turn his elephant schl play cstume int that f an astrnaut fr Hallween.
As a child attracted by the universe, he dreamt f becming an astrnaut. But his wish caught up with him when he realized he didn’t have the ideal skillset t make it as an astrnaut: He was afraid f heights, had pr eyesight and culdn’t swim.

Mammth Cave Natinal Park, in the state f Kentucky, is a unique and histrical natural wnder. It has the wrld’s lngest cave system. There may be anther 600 miles f cave passageways that have yet t be explred. In additin, mre than 200 caves that are discnnected frm the larger system can be fund in the park.
The undergrund caves were created naturally by the prcess f limestne (石灰岩) ersin. Rain and rivers slwly disslve (溶解) and shape sft limestne. The system is still being shaped tday. Nt nly are they an amazing destinatin t visit, but the system als prvides drinking water fr abut 40% f the US ppulatin.
The caves’ first explrers were Native Americans, wh mined (采矿) the upper levels f Mammth Cave. Later, the sites were left in great shape and began t draw public interest.

“Nesting penguins tk ver 600 ‘micrsleeps’ an hur, each lasting nly fur secnds,” researchers wrte in the paper, published in the jurnal Science. The findings suggest “micrsleeps can perfrm at least sme f the functins f sleep”.
Sleep seems t be cmmn amng animals, but it makes them vulnerable because they lse the ability t respnd quickly t the utside envirnment.
The researchers studied chinstrap penguins in the wild using electrnicephalgram (EEG) mnitring. Micrsleeps were shwn by sleep-related brain activity and eye-clsure. They nticed a slight increase in the depth f sleep at arund nn, when risk f predatin culd be at its lwest.
Studies have shwn sme species rutinely sleep very little, seemingly withut negative csts t their perfrmance while awake. African bush elephants sleep n average fr tw hurs a day, and mstly while standing up, ne study fund. Smetimes they went 48 hurs withut sleeping.
