The Alaskan gvernment has a new fur-legged friend keeping migratry birds and ther animals away frm the runways at Fairbanks Internatinal Airprt: a dg-like rbt, “Aurra.” The Alaska Department f Transprtatin and Public Facilities psted its “new hire” n Instagram last mnth, saying that the rbt will be trialed t “augment airprt safety” by trying t prevent encunters between planes and wildlife.
In 2023,92 animal cllisins (相撞) were reprted at airprts near Alaska. And that’s just Alaska. Trying t ease this prblem withut harming wildlife requires sme creative thinking. And that is where Aurra cmes in. Aurra is a headless rbt, abut the size f a hunting dg. Aurra can climb rcks and stairs, and even d a little dance.
It is these mvements that its creatrs, Bstn Dynamics, hpe will be part f a strategy t keep runways clear f wildlife, especially migratry birds in the autumn. Silly as it may seem, Aurra can d these mvements f predatrs such as fxes and wlves, which hpefully will create a fear respnse in the birds and ther wildlife.
Aurra is just the latest in a lng line f rejected ptential slutins t the bird and wildlife prblem at airprts. One suggestin that was put frward in Alaska was flying drnes (无人机) t thrw repellents (驱虫剂) int the air, but it was believed t risky.
And yet, despite the fact that Aurra csts abut $70,000, accrding t Ryan Marlw, Aurra’s rbt handler, the rbt is still preferable t a dg. “A brder dg requires fd, training, warmth, but desn’t cllect data fr us,” he said.
There is smething abut Aurra that has great fun. Maybe it is the dancing, r just the very cncept f a rbt chasing birds arund. Whatever the case, cmparing t ther slutins it seems that Aurra can make airprts just a bit mre safe fr peple and animals alike.
8. What des the underlined wrd “augment” mean in paragraph 1?
A. Enhance.B. Inspect.C. Prve.D. Check.
9. Hw des Aurra intend t keep runways clear f wildlife?
A. By prducing chemical substances.
B. By mdelling after predatrs’ behavirs.
C. By using sund waves t drive animals away.
D. By directly remving animals frm the area.
10. Why des Ryan Marlw cnsider Aurra preferable t a real dg?
A. It is cheaper in the lng run.B. It requires fd and training.
C. It can climb rcks and stairs.D. It can gather data fr analysis.
11. What des the authr imply abut the Aurra rbt in the last paragraph?
A. It is nt as effective as expected.
B. It has brught entertainment t the airprt.
C. It has made airprts the safest places fr all.
D. It is a mre practical slutin than ther ptins.
【答案】8. A 9. B 10. D 11. D

Researchers mnitring the lightless landscape f the Pacific Ocean flr think they’ve bserved “dark xygen” being created there, ptentially challenging cmmnly held beliefs abut hw xygen is prduced n Earth.
Until nw, it was thught that xygen was created nly thrugh phtsynthesis (光合作用), a prcess that requires sunlight. But the discvery casts dubt n that thery and raises new questins abut the rigins f life itself.
The research team led by Sweetman, a prfessr with the Scttish Assciatin fr Marine Science in Oban, Sctland, published its findings Mnday in an article in the jurnal Nature Gescience.
The scientists aren’t certain hw xygen is created at such dark depths, but they believe it’s being prduced by electrically charged minerals called plymetallic ndules (多金属结核). These ndules — “effectively batteries in a rck,” Sweetman said — may use their electric charge t split seawater int hydrgen and xygen.
These ndules cntain metals such as manganese, nickel and cbalt, which can be used t make the batteries used in cnsumer electrnics, appliances and electric vehicles. Franz Geiger, a Nrthwestern University chemistry prfessr wh wrked n the study, said in a separate news release that there may be enugh ndules in an area f the Pacific Ocean called the Clarin-Clippertn Zne t meet glbal energy demands fr decades after.
But Geiger als said that mining wuld have t be cnducted in a way that did nt remve xygen fr life frms in that part f the cean. Cmpanies cnducted explratry missins fr deep-sea mining in the 1970s and 80s, he said, and recent research suggests that thse missins may have had influences n marine life in the area fr decades. “A few years ag, a team f marine bilgists went back t thse areas and fund essentially n life,” Geiger said. “And then a few hundred meters ver t the left and right, where the ndules were undamaged, plenty f life.”
12. What d we knw abut the new research?
A. It highlights the rle f sunlight in seawater.
B. It believes the level f xygen is higher in the deep sea.
C. It argues xygen is created nly thrugh phtsynthesis.
D. It dubts the cnventinal view f hw xygen is prduced.
13. What generates the xygen under the sea accrding t the scientists?
A. Hydrgen and seawater.B. Special minerals n the seabed.
C. A kind f effective batteries.D. Marine plants and sunlight.
14. Why did Geiger mentin the deep-sea mining in the 1970s and 80s?
A. T emphasize the value f marine bilgists’ wrk.
B. T praise previus explratry achievements.
C. T remind peple t prtect marine life.
D. T encurage further marine explitatin.
15. What wuld be the mst suitable title fr the text?
A. Scientists Discver “Dark Oxygen” n the Sea Flr
B. Mineral Resurces Are Detected in the Pacific Ocean
C. Ndules Have Changed the Undersea Landscape
D. “Dark Oxygen” in the Deep Sea — the Origin f Life
【答案】12. D 13. B 14. C 15. A

The Pwer f Determinatin
When I was a child, my twn held an annual kite flying cmpetitin. It was a much-anticipated event, attracting participants f all ages. I remember being particularly fascinated by the way thse clrful kites danced in the sky, seemingly free frm the cntrl f the earth. This year, smething abut the cmpetitin called ut t me in a way it never had befre. Perhaps it was the stries I had heard f perseverance, r maybe it was the dream f seeing my wn kite flying higher than all else. Regardless f the reasn, I decided that this wuld be the year I tk part.
The rad t the cmpetitin was nt easy. My first difficulty was cnvincing my parents t let me participate. They were cncerned abut my studies and hw I wuld manage my time. After much discussin, they agreed, but with the cnditin that I wuld nt let it influence my academics. With their permissin came a newfund determinatin within me.
Next, I needed t build my kite. I had n idea where t start, but luckily, my grandfather was an expert kite maker. He shwed me the rpes, teaching me everything frm selecting the right materials t balancing the kite fr the best flight. We spent hurs in his wrkshp, cutting, pasting, and discussing strategies. His belief in me strengthened my reslve.
Hwever, the flying practices were far frm successful at first. My kite barely left the grund, let alne flew. Each failed attempt weighed heavily n me, making me questin if all this effrt was wrth it. The taunts (挑衅) f ther children wh saw my struggles did nt help either. But then I remembered why I started this jurney — the thrill f seeing my kite fly high and the sense f accmplishment it wuld bring.
I returned t my practice with renewed curage, analyzing what went wrng each time and making adjustments. Gradually, my kite began t rise higher and stay up lnger. This prgress filled me with pride and hpe.
