The high-five hand gesture is generally used as a celebratin. Many see its rigins in baseball. Tw US teams lay claim t inventing the high five: the Ls Angeles Ddgers in 1977 and the Luisville Cardinals in 1978. It’s quite likely that it was neither, and the gesture might have a much earlier rigin. It’s very similar t a 1920s Jazz Age gesture knwn as the “lw five” r “giving skin”.
The ther gesture I’m ging t mentin tday is the handshake. It dates back as far as ancient Greece. Its riginal meaning is t cnvey trust, respect and equality. In the 17th-century Eurpean marriage paintings, we find many examples f handshakes between husband and wife. Nw, f curse, the handshake serves many purpses: meeting, greeting, expressing gratitude r cmpleting an agreement. Besides, it’s als used t ffer cngratulatins, which serves the same purpse as the high five.

Even mre interesting, it was nt enugh fr students t just head t bed early the night befre a test. Instead, it’s the sleep yu get during the days when learning is happening that matters mst.
The time students went t bed each night was similarly imprtant. Thse wh went t bed in early hurs f the mrning perfrmed prly, even if the ttal sleep time was the same as a higher-perfrming student. “When yu g t bed matters,” Grss says, “If yu g t bed at 10, r 12, r l at night, and sleep fr seven hurs, yur perfrmance is the same. But if yu g t bed after 2, yur perfrmance starts t g dwn even if yu get the same seven hurs. S, quantity isn’t everything.”
Perhaps the mst interesting was the huge impact that small differences in sleep patterns had n the students’ grades. The verall curse grades fr students averaging six and a half hurs f sleep each night were 25% lwer than students wh averaged just ne hur mre sleep. Similarly, students wh varied their bedtime by even ne hur each night had grades that drpped 45% belw thse with mre regular bedtimes.

A. T study the relatinship between sleep and grades.
B. T investigate the impact f sleep n students’ health.
C. T prve that smart watches can track physical activity.
D. T find ut the cnnectin between exercise and academic achievement.

Encuraged by his wrds, I agreed t give it a try. I chse Paul Revere’s hrse as my subject. Paul Revere was a silversmith in Bstn wh rde a hrse at night n April 18,1775, t Lexingtn t warn peple that British sldiers were cming. My stry wuld cme straight frm the hrse’s muth. Nt a brilliant idea, but funny, and unlikely t be anyne else’s chice. What did the hrse think, as he sped thrugh the night? Did he get tired? Have dubts? Did he want t quit? I sympathized immediately. I gt tired. I had dubts. I wanted t quit. But, like Revere’s hrse, I kept ging. I wrked hard. I checked my spelling. I asked my lder sister t crrect my grammar. I checked ut a half-dzen bks n Paul Revere frm the library. I even read a few f them. When I handed in the essay t my teacher, he read it, laughed ut lud, and said, “Great. Nw, write it again.” I wrte it again, and again and again. When I finally finished it, the thught f winning had given way t the enjyment f writing. If I didn’t win, I wuldn’t care.

【答案】
A few weeks later, when I almst frgt the cntest, there came the news. I wn first prize! At that instant, my mind went blank fr a mment, and then it was flded with a swirl f emtins. I clutched the certificate, my hands trembling slightly, scarcely believing that I, wh nce shied away frm writing, had achieved this. Lking ahead, I saw a path that had previusly been bscured by my insecurities nw stretching ut brightly befre me. I was determined t keep perfecting my skills, perhaps even sharing my experiences t inspire thers wh, like me, dubted their abilities. This win was nt just a milestne; it was the ignitin switch fr a future filled with the written wrd, and I culdn’t wait t see where it wuld take me.
