Thugh Mther’s Day fllws Earth Day, fr me, they have always been related t each ther. My mm has
been “green” since she became cncerned abut the envirnment. Part f this habit was brn f thrift (节俭). Like
her mther and her grandmther befre her, mm saves glass jars, empty cheese cntainers and reuses her plastic
bags.
Mm creates a kind f harmnius relatinship with wildlife in her yard. She knws t pick the apples n her
trees a little early t avid the bears and that if she leaves the bird feeders ut at night, it is likely that they will be
kncked dwn by a family f raccns (浣熊). Spiders that make their way int the huse and are caught in juice
glasses will be set lse in the garden.
I try t teach my children that lking ut fr the envirnment starts with being aware f the envirnment. On
busy streets, we lk fr dandelins(蒲公英) t fly in the wind; we say hell t neighbrhd cats and pick up
plastic cups and paper bags. This teaching cmes easily, I realize, because I was taught s well by example. Mm
didn’t need t lecture; she didn’t need t beat a drum t change the wrld. She simply slwed dwn enugh t
enjy living in it and with that jy came mercy and an instinct(直觉) fr prtectin.
I am slwing dwn and it isn’t because f the weight f my nearly frty years n the planet it is ut f my
cncern fr the planet itself. I’ve begun t save glass jars and reuse packing envelpes. I pause in my daily tasks t
watch the squirrels race each ther in the trees abve my huse.
Last summer, in the cmpany f my sn and daughter, I planted tmates in my yard. With the heat f August

A recent study cnducted by Gavin Sandercck at the University f Essex in the UK and his clleagues shws
just ne in 20 peple aged 18 t 64 in England are meeting England’s strictest weekly strength training guidelines.
Strength training is defined as any activities that strengthens muscles r bne, says Sandercck. This can include
lifting weights, bdy weight exercises and fitness plans.
The teams lked at survey data frm ver 275,000 adults in this age grup. Between 2015 and 2017, these
peple were asked t estimate hw much time they spend ding physical activity each week. They wanted t find
ut what prprtin f these adults in England met the UK’s weekly health guidelines, which recmmend 150
minutes f mderate activity a week.
The researchers fund that n average just 5 percent f these adults in England met the full recmmendatin,
including strength training. They als fund that men were mre likely t meet all the guidelines as well as yunger
age grups. “But the strngest effect that we fund when we lked at the variables was educatin,” Sandercck
says.
“There are tw main reasns why this culd be the case,” Sandercck says. “ Peple wh are mre educated
may be mre likely t knw what the UK’s recmmended health advice is. On the ther hand, it culd be that
strength training——especially lifting weights——ften requires access t a gym which csts mney. Higher
levels f educatin have been linked t greater wealth,” he says.
“T encurage greater participatin in strength training, I believe we need t raise awareness abut its multiple

became mre settled and fewer in number. In recent centuries, trade, industrializatin, the develpment f the
natin-state and the spread f universal cmpulsry educatin, especially glbalisatin and better cmmunicatins
in the past few decades, all have caused many languages t disappear, and dminant languages such as English,
Spanish and Chinese are increasingly taking ver.
At present, the wrld has abut 6,800 languages. The distributin f these languages is hugely uneven. The
general rule is that mild znes have relatively few languages. Often spken by many peple while ht, wet znes
have lts, ften spken by small numbers. Eurpe has nly arund 200 Languages: the Americas abut 1,000,
Africa 2,400; and Asia and the Pacific perhaps 3,200, f which Papua New Guinea alne accunts fr well ver
800. The median number(中位数) f speakers is a mere 6,000, which means that half the wrlds languages are
spken by fewer peple than that.
