As I walked int the Gerge Eastman Museum’s Dryden Theater, I felt as thugh I had stepped int a time
machine. On the way t the traditinal, ld-timey bx ffice, tns f vintage mvie psters and the theater entrance
made me feel like I was n Bradway. As everyne tk their seats, an lder gentleman wh lked like he walked
straight ut f the 1920s gave the attendees a histrical backgrund f the film we were seeing — The Barker.
The film itself, which was released in 1928, is cnsidered a “part-talkie”. Befre films included synchrnized
(同步的) sund, films were played with live accmpaniment and cntained subtitles t add cntext. With the
inventin f synchrnized sund, films slwly added talking dialgue in scenes thrughut the film; these films
were cnsidered “part-talkies”.
The Barker, which explres the lives f carnival wrkers, is the talking debut (首次登场) f all f the main
cast. The film was revlutinary nt nly fr the technlgy but als fr the actrs. My film experience cnsists f
mstly talkies, s when I finished The Barker, I felt like I witnessed smething brand new fr the first time.
The experience I had at Dryden Theater was unlike any mvie-ging experience I had ever had. The music,
the film, and the atmsphere itself were cmpletely unique! Since viewing films has gradually been switched t
streaming services, especially since the pandemic, this has bth increased the accessibility f films and rbbed us f
reliance n a scial experience t watch a mvie — ne that attending The Barker reminded me f.
“Barbenheimer”, a phenmenn that cntrasts the bvius differences in the recently released mvies Barbie
and Oppenheimer, allwed us t return t the mvie-ging adventure. Finally, everyne wanted big screens and
surrund sund rather than the tiny screens in bedrms. Mre imprtantly, we were all able t interact with a piece
f cntent alngside ther peple. “Barbenheimer” brught back the pastime f ging t the cinema — ne that I
think we shuld cntinue t engage in. I say we take a page ut f the 1920s playbk and return t the cinema.
4. Wh made the audience f The Barker knw better abut its backgrund?
第 4页/共 12页
A. A star wh was cast in the mvie. B. A man wh had a lk f the past.
C. An elderly gentleman frm the 1920s. D. A staff member wrking at the bx ffice.
5. Which f the fllwing is true f “part-talkies”?
A. The Barker is a “part-talkie”. B. “Part-talkies” are ttally silent.
C. “Part-talkies” invlve live accmpaniment. D. The films befre The Barker are “part-talkies”.
6. What is the authr’s attitude twards the streaming film services?
A. Ambiguus. B. Apprving. C. Critical. D. Objective.
7. What des the authr imply abut the “1920s playbk” in the final paragraph?
A. Mdern cinemas shuld mimic Bradway-style theaters.
B. Filmmakers shuld fcus n histrical themes.
C. Audiences shuld value shared viewing traditins.
D. Theaters need larger screens t cmpete with streaming.

Sme talk f building settlements n the mn r mars t help make sure humanity survives lng int the
future. Others have their sights set clser t hme: n future cities under the cean.
“Technlgically speaking, it is abslutely pssible t clnize the bttm f the sea,” says Fabien Custeau, a
well-knwn cean explrer wh nce spent 31 days living in what is nw the wrld’s nly functining undersea
habitat, Aquarius. It’s abut the size f a schl bus and lcated 62 feet belw the cean surface ff the Flrida
Keys.
Just as astrnauts test what it wuld be like t live in space, aquanauts try ut undersea living with an eye n
the future. Escaping frm disasters such as climate change, wars, r pandemics is ne reasn t live under the sea.
Others include studying, explring, r appreciating the cean. It’s cstly and expensive t cnstantly keep up an
cean habitat which must pump in r make its wn air, electricity, and fresh water. Inhabitants have t deal with
high pressure. And infectins can develp rapidly due t high humidity.
Despite the challenges, several new cean habitats and cities are under cnstructin. A series f space
statin-like undersea living quarters fr aquanauts called Prteus are scheduled t be cmpleted by 2025 ff
Curaca, an island nrth f Venezuela in Suth America. An undersea clny called Ven Base Alpha will be built
near a hydrthermal vent, which wuld supply it with energy. Meanwhile, an undersea city called Ocean Spiral in
Japan wuld link its surface t the deep sea, using the difference in pressure t generate energy and prduce fresh
water. This sunds amazing, but it wuld be extremely expensive and remains just a design.
第 5页/共 12页
Nt everyne agrees that building hmes in the cean is a gd idea. This type f develpment culd place
even mre strain n ecsystems that are already struggling with pllutin and climate change. It’s imprtant t
make sure that any cnstructin is dne carefully, says Susanne Menden-Deuer, an ceangrapher at the University
f Rhde Island. Wild undersea habitats shuld be treated as “the precius, irreplaceable resurce that they are,”
she says.
8. What d we knw abut Aquarius?
A. It is still under cnstructin. B. It functins as an undersea schl bus.
C. It is the nly cean habitat in peratin. D. It nly allws a persn t live there fr 31 days.
9. What is paragraph 3 mainly abut?
A. The present and future f living under the sea.
B. The reasns and challenges f living under the sea.
C. The purpse and cst f building undersea settlements.
D. The prblems and findings f building undersea settlements.
10. What wuld be the result f building hmes in the cean accrding t the text?
A. Rapid develpment f undersea habitats. B. Prtectin f irreplaceable cean resurce.
C. Negative impacts n undersea ecsystems. D. Struggles with pllutin and climate change.
11 Where is the text mst prbably taken frm?
A. An nline pst. B. A science fictin. C. An-academic article. D. A science magazine.

Can merely making a pledge (誓言) t be hnest withut any punishment invlved lead peple t behave
mre hnestly, even when there’s reasn t lie?
A recent study published in Nature Human Behavir reveals that hnesty pledges can effectively reduce
dishnest behavir — but nly when carefully wrded. Psychlgist Janis Zickfeld and his team cnducted
experiments with ver 21,000 participants frm the U.S. and the U.K., simulating a tax-reprting scenari where
subjects culd lie abut their earnings withut penalty. Participants perfrmed a srting task in which they earned
mney based n hw quickly they finished. They then reprted hw much they had made, which was taxed at 35
percent. Participants culd lie withut cnsequence but were als tld the cllected tax wuld g t the Red Crss.
The researchers generated 21 types f hnesty pledges. The tax cmpliance figure averaged 82.3 percent fr
participants in the cntrl grup wh declared their incme withut taking pledges, cmpared with 86.2 percent
第 6页/共 12页
averaged acrss all the grups that made pledges. The research fund that the pledges were far frm equal in
preserving hnest behavir. Specific pledges like “Misreprting is frbidden” reduced cheating by nearly 50%
cmpared t vague statements such as “I am an hnest persn.” The next mst effective spelled ut the meaning f
dishnesty r the rules t be fllwed (“I understand that misreprting is frbidden in this study”). Casting hnesty
as all-r-nthing (“either the reprting is hnest r it is nt”) and appealing t scial nrms were als bth mdestly
effective. Pledges highlighting scial bnds r self-image did nt have a significant effect.
Timing als mattered: pledges presented after cmpleting a task but befre reprting results were mre
effective than thse shwn earlier. Additinally, participants wh typed their pledges rather than just checking a
bx shwed higher cmpliance rates, suggesting active engagement strengthens cmmitment. Interestingly, the
study uncvered demgraphic (人口统计的) differences. Yunger males with lw scres in “hnesty-humility”
persnality traits were mst likely t cheat, while cultural factrs als played a rle — Americans lied mre
frequently than British participants in the pund-denminated experiment, where the British pund is used, s
freign currencies perhaps seemed mre abstract t the American participants.
These findings have practical implicatins. As researcher Shaul Shalvi ntes, “Precisin in wrding isn’t just
abut grammar; it’s what separates symblic gestures frm real behaviral change.” The team is nw applying
these insights in real-wrld settings, including hspitals tracking medical equipment returns.
“The beauty f these interventins is: they’re very cheap,” Shalvi says. But this study is nly a first step.
“Once we knw what effects are vigrus and steady, we can g t plicymakers and suggest randmized
cntrlled trials in target ppulatins. Then, if that wrks, we can lk at changing tax frms r whatever.”
12 What is the primary fcus f the research discussed in the passage?
A. The ecnmic benefits f tax cmpliance.
B. The psychlgical mechanisms behind effective integrity pledges.
C. A cmparisn f ethical standards acrss cultures and natins.
D. Technlgical slutins fr reducing financial fraud.
13. What des the underlined wrd “cmpliance” mean in paragraph 3?
A. Understanding B. Agreement C. Obedience D. Remembering.
14. Which pledge wuld likely wrk best in a schl exam setting?
A. “Gd students dn’t cheat.” B. “Cheating vilates academic rules.”
C. “I value hnesty in educatin.” D. “Mst students prefer fair tests.”
第 7页/共 12页
15. Which real-wrld applicatin f the study’s findings is mentined in the passage?
A. Designing tax frms with stricter penalties. B. Tracking medical equipment returns in hspitals.
C. Prmting hnesty pledges in internatinal trade. D. Training teachers t use vague mral statements.
