“I think especially grwing up in the limelight (引人注目) as a teenager, yu’re very judgemental f yurself when yu d see cmments f ther peple judging yu. It can add t the stress f the things yu re already ging thrugh. I think peple d think I’m cnfident because I cver my nerves with a big smile and that’s what I’ve been ding in my whle life.”
Susanna asked Maisie if she had a technique fr dealing with her nerves. “It depends n what it is,” said Maisie. “A lt f the time — and it’s ging t sund really stupid — but I write a script. In ancient Egypt, the rich sils alng the Nile River supprted rughly 3 millin peple. Nw there are 30 times that number f peple living in Egypt, with the Egyptian ppulatin saring frm 45 millin in the 1980s t ver 100 millin nw.
Just 4% f Egypt’s land is suitable fr agriculture, and that number is reducing quickly due t the urban and suburban develpment. “It’s nt an verstatement t say that this is a crisis,” said Nasem Badreldin, an expert at the University f Manitba. “Satellite data shws that Egypt is lsing abut 2% f its farmland per decade due t urbanizatin, and the prcess is speeding. If this cntinues, Egypt will face serius fd security prblems.” Accrding t ne analysis, the amunt f farmland near Alexandria drpped by 11% between 1987 and 2019, while urban areas increased by 11%. In recent years, the Egyptian gvernment has prmised t end unlicensed building n farmland, which remains a difficult task t fulfill.
Urbanizatin isn’t the nly factr t reduce Egypt’s farmland. Sea level rise f 1.6 millimeters per year has cntributed t the salinizatin (盐碱化) f farmland in Egypt. Abut 15% f Egypt’s richest farmland has already been damaged by sea level rise and saltwater intrusin (侵入). One respnse t the lss f farmland has included effrts t green parts f the desert. Fr instance, Faruk El-Baz, Bstn University scientist, has planned t build highways, railways, water pipelines, and pwer lines t prmte the establishment f new farmland in deserts west f the delta.
While that prject hasn’t been finished, much f desert has turned int farmland in recent decades. The satellite phts shw new farmland alng the Cair Highway. A mixture f center-pivt irrigatin (灌溉) and drip irrigatin makes farming in this area pssible. “It is certainly pssible t establish new farmland frm the desert by tapping grundwater resurces, thugh it’s a little expensive prcess,” said Badreldin.

Imagine an iPad that’s mre than just an iPad — with a surface that can change shapes, ptentially allwing yu t draw 3D designs and even hld yur partner’s hand frm an cean away. That’s the visin f a team f engineers frm the University f Clrad Bulder. In a new study, they’ve created a ne-f-a-kind shape-shifting display that fits n a card table. The device is made frm a 10-by-10 grid (网格) f sft rbtic “muscles” that can sense utside pressure and pp up t create patterns. It may als deliver smething even rarer: the sense f tuch in a digital age.
The grup’s innvatin builds ff a class f sft rbts pineered by a team led by Christph Keplinger, frmerly an assistant prfessr f mechanical engineering at CU Bulder. The riginal mdel isn’t ready fr the market yet, but the researchers envisin that, ne day, similar technlgies culd lead t sensry glves fr virtual gaming r a smart cnveyr belt that can srt different items like selecting apples frm bananas.
The prject has its rigins in the search fr a different kind f technlgy: artificial rgans. In 2017, researchers led by Mark Rentschler, prfessr f mechanical engineering and bimedical engineering, were develping what they called sTISSUE — sft rgans that behave and feel like real human bdy parts but are made entirely ut f silicne-like materials. “Yu culd use these artificial rgans t help develp medical devices r surgical rbtic tls fr much less cst than using real animal tissue,” said Rentschler, a c-authr f the new study.
In develping that technlgy, hwever, the team landed n the idea f a tabletp display. If yu pass an electric current thrugh the actuatrs (执行器), the surface will change shape and jump up. The actuatrs als include sft, magnetic sensrs that can detect the pressure when yu push them, which allws fr sme fun activities.
Other research teams have develped similar smart tablets, but the CU Bulder display is sfter, takes up a lt less rm and is much shifter: each f its rbtic muscles can activate as much as 50 times per secnd. The grup is als wrking t design a glve that allws yu t “feel” bjects in virtual reality.
      32. What is a big feature f the new display?
      A. The flexibility f its shape.B. Its quick respnse t instructins.
      C. Its gd sense f the envirnment.D. The great strength f its rbtic muscles.
      33. What is a pssible applicatin f similar technlgies?
      A. The system t pick high-quality fruits.B. Rbtic peratin in medical surgeries.
      C. Tuch sensry functin in virtual reality.D. Real-time mnitring f envirnmental cnditins.
      34. Why is the develpment f artificial rgans mentined?
      A. T intrduce sTISSUE t the public.B. T stress the advantage f sft materials.
      C. T highlight their impact n medical research.D. T explain the inspiratin fr the new display.
      35. What des the underlined wrd “shifter” in the last paragraph prbably mean?
