      Scientists in Switzerland have used lasers (激光) t change the path (路线) f a lightning (闪电) strike (攻击). The experiment suggests that in the future, lasers might be useful fr prtecting large buildings frm lightning.
      Lightning can be very pwerful and cause serius prblems n the grund. Lightning strike can cause fires, destry buildings, and even kill peple. The damage (损害) frm lightning csts billins f dllars every year. In the US, lightning strikes killed clse t 450 peple between 2006 and 2021.
      Scientists have been trying t find a way t prtect buildings frm lightning fr a lng time. Nw the best way is by putting metal rds (竿) n the buildings. These rds are cnnected t the grund. The lightning is attracted (吸引) t the rds, which safely guide the electricity int the grund. But lightning rds can nly prtect a small area. Sme buildings—such as airprts are s large that it’s difficult t prtect the whle building using lightning rds.
      Anther idea is t use lasers t guide lightning. Scientists had been wrking n the idea fr ver 20 years. Using a pwerful laser that can fire abut 1,000 times a secnd, scientists in Switzerland were able t guide lightning strikes fr 164 feet. The heat frm the laser creates a path f air that is less thick than the air arund it. The path als has a special charge (电荷). The lightning can fllw this path almst as if it were a lightning rd. Scientist Matte Clerici said, “The fact that we managed t d it in an utdr envirnment is a very big step.”

Yu will take actin because yu expect t get smething in return r avid smething unpleasant. Intrinsic mtivatin is when yu decide t d smething because yu find it satisfying. Yu are perfrming an activity fr what it is nt because yu are after sme external (外部的) reward. The behavir itself is its wn reward.
      Studies have shwn that ffering t many external rewards fr an already internally (在内部) rewarding behavir can reduce intrinsic mtivatin——which is knwn as the ver justificatin (奖励过当) effect. Fr example, in a 2008 study, children wh were rewarded fr playing with a ty they had already expressed interest in playing with became less interested in the ty after being externally rewarded.
      This is nt t suggest that extrinsic mtivatin is a bad thing—it can be beneficial (有益的) in sme situatins. Fr example, extrinsic mtivatin can be especially helpful when a persn needs t cmplete a task that they find unpleasant.
