Dear Bill,
This is my second month in Singapore. Can you believe it? I love the life here. I’m so happy I decided to go on staying here.
Life is very different here. I share an apartment with two other students. Each day, I get up at about 7:30 a.m. and walk to school alone. On the way, I eat breakfast in a coffee shop. At school, I have classes all morning. My classmates come from all over the world and there are lots of Chinese students. We all have lunch together in the dining hall—usually sandwiches. In the afternoon, I read books in the library. In the evening, I go to the cinema or go for a walk around the town with my friends, except on Fridays and Saturdays, when I have a part-time job in a restaurant.
Singapore is an excellent place to try new food. Whether you like Indian food or Japanese food, you’ll find it all in Singapore. But I always miss Mum’s cooking.

Yours,
Julie

Known as the birthplace of kites, Weifang in Shandong Province has a long history of making kites. According to local artists, the Weifang kite-making can date back to 2,000 years ago. At first, they were often used for measuring distances and communicating. During the Ming Dynasty (1368—1644) kites started to be popular among ordinary people as entertainment(娱乐). In 2006, the Weifang kite-making was included in the national-level intangible cultural heritage(非物质文化遗产)lists.
Yang Hongwei, 56, was born in a kite-making family in Weifang. When she was young, she often saw kites with bright colors and different shapes in her grandfather’s shop. “Every time I see these beautiful kites, my bad feelings go away,” said Yang. Yang learned to make kites from her grandfather at the age of 16. After practicing the skill for 10 years, she started her own shop in 1992.
“Many places around the world have a tradition of flying kites,” Yang said. “But I think the cultural idea behind our kites is special.” On Yang’s kites, people can see not only pictures like butterflies and birds, but also some prints telling Chinese stories and history. For example, she once made a kite with a phoenix(凤凰). On each side of the phoenix were 50 pictures of famous women from Chinese history. Each woman was different in look, clothes and makeup. To create these drawings, she spent much time checking historical records.
ln her free time, Yang travels to countries such as Germany, Australia, the United States and New Zealand. Do you like writing by hand or with a keyboard?
A new brain research, led by researchers at Norwegian University of Science and Technology shows that choosing handwriting instead of using a keyboard results in better learning and memory.
“When you write your shopping list or class notes by hand, you simply remember what you wrote better later,” said Audrey who did the study.
12 young grown-ups and 12 children took part in the study. This is the first time that children have taken part in such a study. Special machines were used to follow and record brain wave(电波)activity. Each person wore a special cap with over 250 electrodes(电极)on the head, and was asked to write by hand and use a keyboard. Each examination took 45 minutes for each person.
The results showed that the brain in both young grown-ups and children is much more active when writing by hand than when using a keyboard. According to Audrey, plenty of senses become active by holding a pen and pushing it down on paper, seeing the letters written and hearing the sound made while writing. These build the connection between different parts of the brain, opening the brain up for learning.
Audrey believes that the results call attention to the importance of children being asked to draw and write at an early age, especially at school. “Learning to write by hand is a bit slower course, but it’s important for children to write by hand. Students who write longer texts earlier are more motivated to write,” she said.
The hand movements which are used to form the shapes of letters are helpful in several ways. “If you use a keyboard, you use the same movement for each letter. Writing by hand requires control of your fine motor(精细动作)skills. It’s important to put the brain in a learning condition as often as possible,” Audrey added. For example, you might use a keyboard to write an article, but you should take notes by hand during a class.
56. How many people took part in the study?
A. 12. B. 24. C. 45. D. 250.
57. What is the result of the research?
A. You don’t need to take notes by hand.
B. Using a keyboard results in better learning.
C. The brain is more active when we write by hand.
D. It was the first time for children to take part in the study.
58. Which of the following has the similar meaning with “motivated to write”?
A. Careful to write. B. Interested in writing.
C. Afraid of writing. D. Responsible for writing.
59. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. Ways to take notes by hand. B. Examples of using a keyboard.
C. How to control your fine motor skills. D. Why hand movements in writing are helpful.
60. What is the best title for the text?
A. A time for modern machines. B. Writing by hand helps learn better.
C. An important age for keyboard. D. Putting your brain in a learning state.
