A research paper is a lng essay in which writers present their perspective n a tpic using independent surces. It is a prven fact that finding reliable and valid surces fr research papers is yur first and primary task. 36 Here’s hw t gather the infrmatin frm surces befre yu start writing.
Is the authr a respected authrity in the field?
The credibility f an authr is very imprtant in determining the quality f surces. 37 But such claims must be cnfirmed. Lk fr the authr’s academic backgrund, and prfessinal assciatins. Yu can search the web fr the authr r search DISCOVERY t see what als the authr has written.

University and academic presses publish high-quality material that has been peer-reviewed. Experts assess the merits f the paper befre it is published, which ensures its quality. 38 Gvernment r educatinal sites—nes that have names with gv r edu—are usually reliable.
Des the surce cntain any bias?
Bias is nt necessarily disqualifying, but yu need t determine whether the surce favrs a certain side f an issue. Fr example, if an article says that petrl cmpanies d nt represent a danger t the envirnment, check what ther surces are cited. If mst f the surces are frm il cmpanies, there is prbably bias.
      39
In general, surces shuld be within the past 10 years fr subjects in which infrmatin changes quickly (science, technlgy, medicine). Cnsider whether the age f a surce adversely affects its usefulness t yur research. N matter what the date f publicatin is, it is yur respnsibility t be sure that all f yur surces cntain infrmatin that is relevant and accurate.
Nw that yu have yur ntes frm yur surces, it is time t write yur first draft, and yu must include specific infrmatin frm yur surce t supprt yur ideas. 40 —but if yu can cllect the right resurces frm the start, yu’re halfway there!
      A. Hw current is the infrmatin?
      B. Des the authr agree r disagree with my ideas?
      C. If yu are using a website, make sure it is reputable.
      D. Putting tgether a tp-grade essay is a demanding task.
      E. Many peple n the Internet describe themselves as experts.
      F. Althugh it is nt a simple r quick prcess, it is pssible t d it n yur wn.
      G. When using a cmputer fr searching surces, make sure t respect the library’s plicies.
