The great elephant stands in the ht African sun. Slwly the beast lifts its head and its thick trunk delicately curls arund the leaves f a nearby tree, pulling ut the leaves and plitely slipping them int its muth.
The beast's great grey skin is partly brken and aged frm the African sun. Sme mud drps n ne side frm its last trip t a nearby river. Its rugh hair sticks ut frm all ver its skin and tw large, white tusks curve elegantly frm either side f its muth.
Smewhere a lin rars and smething else gives a lud high shut. A vulture (秃鹫) drifts ver far abve this wrld, barely a black dt in the sky. The buzzing f the cuntless bush insects seems t cllectively shift up in high tune, almst like the whle f the savanna (热带草原) was singing sme sng that nly they knew.
I peer thrugh the lens (镜头) at this scene. The zm lens shws almst every detail f the elephant: the three small cuts in its left ear frm playing as a baby arund thrn trees, the scar dwn its frnt leg where a lin caught it unaware as a yung adult, and weathering n its great, valuable tusks frm decades f living in this unfrgiving grassland n a dusty cntinent.
And then the elephant lks at me.
It lks at me with thse big, eyelashed eyes with a warmth cming utwards frm a vast, hidden depth there. I can suddenly feel its sul, and feel the line f elephants that came befre this ne, trailing back t the very beginnings f this great savanna. We will never understand what wnders this ancient being and its kind have seen and whispered t each ther acrss the ages n this ld, sacred grassland.
It lks at me, and it lks thrugh me and sees me.
The elephant knws I am there. It always did. It is nt running away, nr is it fighting. It accepts and frgives. It lves. But, mstly, it just feels sad. It feels srry fr me. I cannt d this anymre.
I take my eye ff the sights and hand the gun back t my partner.“Let's g hme,”I said in a quiet vice,“let's just g hme.”

Since the release f generative AI tls like ChatGPT, millins f peple have started using them t access knwledge. And it's easy t understand their appeal: Present a task, get a plished utput, and mve n — it feels like effrtless prductin. Hwever, new research suggests this ease may have a cst.
A series f studies revealed that peple wh used AI fr creative writing develped wrk with lwer riginality cmpared t thse using the“sl-creatin way”. In the experiments, participants were tasked with writing a shrt stry and were randmly assigned t d s by using either an AI tl r relying n their wn minds (the“sl-creatin way”). Once cmpleted, their stries were cllected fr evaluatin.
The data revealed a cnsistent pattern: Peple wh created a stry thrugh AI assistance versus sl creatin felt that they were less engaged, invested less effrt in the creative prcess, and ultimately prduced stries that were less riginal and less creative, and were ften superficially smther and quicker t wrap up. When these stries were assessed by independent readers wh didn't knw hw they were prduced, these readers fund the AI- assisted stries less engaging and were less likely t give them high ratings.
Why des this happen? A cre principle f creative wrk is that peple create best when they are actively engaged. Sl creatin invlves mre“frictin”: yu must evaluate ideas, struggle with structure, and synthesize infrmatin frm different surces. This active prcess strengthens creative capability. In cntrast, getting a ready- made, plished utput frm an AI requires less cgnitive struggle, which can lead t a less durable and mre superficial grasp f the creative prcess.
Hwever, t be clear, we d nt believe the slutin t these issues is t avid using AI tls, especially given the undeniable benefits they ffer in many cntexts. Rather, peple need t cnsider when t use AI fr speed and when t rely n their wn cgnitive effrt fr depth and creativity.
28. What can be learned abut generative AI tls frm paragraph 1?
A. Their perceived efficiency. B. Their cnstant technical updates.
C. Their guarantee f deeper understanding. D. Their access t a vast amunt f infrmatin.
29. Hw did the AI- grup stries differ frm thse f the sl- creatin grup?
A. They were plished mre. B. They were nt as well received.
C. They were shrter than expected. D. They were mre accessible and efficient.
30. What des the underlined wrd“synthesize” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Classify. B. Cmpare. C. Integrate. D. Summarize.
31. What is the authr's purpse in writing the text?
A. T argue against the use f AI tls.
B. T highlight sl creatin's superirity.
C. T encurage mindful engagement with AI tls.
D. T cmpare the efficiency f AI tls with sl creatin.

While new, highly-effective weight-lss drugs have hit the market, their price label and numerus side effects mean ther weight-lss interventins are still needed.
T that end, Yue Wu at Sichuan University in China and her clleagues develped micrbeads(微珠) that trap fat befre it is absrbed by the bdy. They created the beads frm vitamin E and cmpunds(化合物) fund in green tea, then cated them with alginate, a type f seaweed fibre. They are all fd-grade substances apprved by the US Fd and Drug Administratin (FDA).
Once int the stmach, the prtective alginate layer expands, allwing partially-digested fats t enter the inside f the beads, where they are attached t the cmpunds within. The beads alng with the trapped fat are then discharged.
The team tested the beads in eight rats fed a diet f 60 per cent fat. After 30 days, the rats lst abut17 per cent f their bdy weight n average. In cmparisn, a separate grup f eight rats fed the same high-fat diet withut the beads didn't lse weight, and neither did anther bead-free grup kept n a diet f 10 percent fat. The rats treated with the micrbeads als had less fat tissue and bdy damage than the thers.
The researchers als tested bdy waste frm rats fed the micrbeads. Their waste cntained rughly as much fat as that f a furth grup f rats treated with rlistat, a weight-lss drug that prevents fat absrptin. This indicates the micrbeads blcked fat uptake, like the drug des. Yet unlike rlistat, the beads didn't cause any side effects in the stmach.
A clinical trial invlving 26 peple is already under way.“Initial data may becme available within the next year,” said Wu in a press release.
The researchers fresee adding the flavurless beads, which can be shaped int balls, t desserts and teas.“We want t develp smething that wrks with hw peple nrmally eat and live,” said Wu.
32. What can we learn abut micrbeads frm the first tw paragraphs?

C. They speed up fat absrptin. D. They are develped t meet market demand.
33. What des paragraph 3 say abut micrbeads?
A. Their applicatin. B. Their cmpsitins.
C. Their wrking principle. D. Their physical prperties.
34. Why des the authr mentin the furth grup f rats in paragraph 5?
A. T prve they lst mre weight. B. T ensure a far-reaching experiment.
C. T shw rlistat can prevent fat absrptin. D. T stress micrbeads' advantage ver rlistat.
35. What can be a suitable title fr the text?
A. Micrbeads May Enjy Ppularity
B. A Prmising Weight-lss Alternative
C. The Future f Micrbeads in Desserts and Teas
D. Micrbeads Outperfrm Existing Weight-lss Drugs

Wang Yifan, a 16-year-ld frm Chengdu, had always pictured the United States as a land f skyscrapers, endless highways, and smiling faces. When his exchange prgram placed him at a high schl in a small twn in Oregn fr ten mnths, he tried hard t hide his disappintment —— n skyscrapers, nly endless pine trees and rain. Still, he tld himself that adventure culd blm anywhere.
Frm the first day, hwever, the gaps felt wider than the Pacific he had just crssed. His hst family, thugh friendly, chatted away in slang he culdn't catch. At schl, he culdn't get used t the lud slam f lckers, and the sur cheese smell in the cafeteria nly sharpened his lnging fr Sichuan peppercrns.
One Mnday mrning, when Mr. Brwn asked him t read a shrt paragraph alud in histry class,he came acrss the wrd“castle” and prnunced every letter, which sent a ripple f giggles thrugh the classrm and left his ears burning.
That afternn his literature teacher Ms. Carter annunced the annual Stry Slam: each cntestant wuld tell a five-minute true stry nstage the fllwing Friday, and the ne wh mved the crwd mst wuld skip the literature final exam. Yifan's first instinct was t withdraw—— the laughter in histry class still rang in his ears.
But that night, the thught f escaping the three-hur final exam stirred smething in him. A stry surfaced: the first time he and Grandpa leaned ver a tiny pt f crimsn il, fishing tfu ut f the steaming sup, laughing between ht bites. Then he typed, trimmed, and plished it until it was Slam-ready.
Hwever, the next mrning he hesitated at the sign-up sheet. Mary, his nly new friend, came ver, patted his shulder and whispered,“Tell the ht-pt stry and I' ll help yu practice after schl.” Yifan felt the warmth that chili nce sparked in his chest. He picked up the pen.
