Grwing up, I disliked writing. It was the last thing I wanted t d and it’s ne reasn why I pursued science in the first place. In high schl, I hated writing essays. Fr hurs, I stared at blank pages, trying t turn my scattered thughts int fluent sentences and I ften received papers marked with numerus crrectins. I began t wnder if I was simply nt cut ut fr writing. And that was OK. I didn’t have t be gd at everything.
I fcused instead n my lve fr math and science. I tk cmfrt there, knwing bjective truth culd be fund if I searched methdically. In cllege, I studied engineering and jined a research lab t gain hands-n experience. My first prject was t imprve the efficiency f a magnetic cmpnent. Despite initial disappinting results, I cntinued thrugh numerus designs. Eventually, we develped a design that halved energy lsses. I was delighted — until my prfessr tld me t write that research paper.
I knew that if I wanted t becme a researcher, I wuld need t spend time penning papers. But I was scared f failing. In a panic, I asked a graduate student in my lab fr help. We defined a gal fr the paper, and I carefully wrte an utline. But when I asked him fr feedback, I sn fund the paper cvered in red marks. He explained that red didn’t mean I was a bad writer. Writing isn’t a ne-and-dne thing. It requires revising yur wrk, ften several times. Suddenly it ccurred t me, “Hadn’t I dne the same thing when I was searching fr an efficient design?”
I plished my paper’s utline int sentences and paragraphs, guided by feedback. Thugh my first draft wasn’t perfect, with help, I enjyed the prcess f imprving it. Writing has since becme ne f my favrite parts f research, helping me rganize my thughts. I’ve even started writing ppular science articles, which I never culd have imagined during my early struggles with essays.

What acts f kindness will make us the happiest, and wh tends t benefit the mst? A newly-published review f decades f kindness research prvides sme answers.
In this paper, researchers analyzed the results frm 126 research articles lking at almst 200, 000 participants frm arund the wrld. The studies they chse measured well-being in varius ways, including bth mental and physical health. Sme were experiments, where peple did a kindness practice t bserve its effects, while thers just surveyed peple abut hw kind and happy they were.
As expected, peple wh were kind tended t have higher well-being. Lead researcher Bryant Hui was astunded that the relatinship wasn't strnger than it was, but he was still encuraged by the results.
One thing Hui and his clleagues fund was that peple wh perfrmed randm, infrmal acts f kindness, like bringing a meal t a sad friend, tended t be happier than peple wh perfrmed mre frmal acts f kindness, like vlunteering in a sup kitchen.
The researchers als fund that peple wh were kind tended t be higher in "eudaimnic happiness"(a sense f meaning and purpse in life) mre than "hednic happiness"(a sense f pleasure and cmfrt). Perhaps this makes sense, given that being kind takes effrt, which reduces cmfrt but culd make peple feel better abut themselves and their abilities, which wuld prvide a sense f meaning.
Being kind came with greater eudaimnic happiness fr wmen than fr men, t. Accrding t Hui, this culd be because, in many cultures, wmen are expected t be kinder than men; s, they may have mre t gain frm it. And yunger participants experienced mre happiness when they were kind than lder participants, perhaps fr develpmental reasns, he says.
Hui isn't sure why acting kind might have these different effects n different grups, but he pints t theries put frth by researcher Elizabeth Midlarsky: Being kind may make us feel better abut urselves as a persn r abut the meaning f ur lives, help us frget ur wn trubles and stresses, r help us be mre scially-cnnected with thers.
28.What des the data in the secnd paragraph intend t shw?
A.The recent paper is wrthy f being read.B.The recent paper gives cnvincing results.
      C.Kindness is always a ht tpic f research.D.Kindness is clsely linked t ne's well-being.
29.What des the underlined wrd "astunded" in paragraph 3 mean?
      A.Afraid.B.Certain.C.Excited.D.Surprised.
30.Which f the fllwing acts f kindness can make ne feel happier accrding t paragraph 4?
      A.Vlunteering in a hspital.B.Cleaning a cmmunity.
C.Returning a lst item t its wner.D.Cllecting dnatins fr the pr.
31.What d the researchers find frm the paper?
A.Being kind has different effects n different grups.
B.Eudaimnic happiness makes peple feel cmfrt.
C.The yunger experienced mre happiness than the lder.
D.Female participants are kinder than male nes.
      D
An verall transfrmatin is needed fr the planet t adapt peple’s pursuit f well-being. A new study by an internatinal team f researchers explres a Thery f Planetary Scial Pedaggy as a driver f a transfrmative prcess based n a learning sciety.
The Thery f Planetary Scial Pedaggy is a way f learning applicable t all scietal sectrs. Accrding t it, peple, scieties and the wrld are an interlinked, systemic bdy. Such a wrldview can make life meaningful, increase peple’s experiences f belnging and inclusin, expand the scpe f care, and help peple identify their pprtunities t influence.
In a time marked by crises, learning t be ne with the wrld is increasingly essential. In many ways, ur everyday lives are linked with all ther life n Earth. Accrding t Prfessr Art O. Salnen f the University f Eastern Finland, the study’s lead authr, the mst imprtant reasn behind the upgrading (升级) planetary crises is peple’s being separated frm their surrunding reality.
He says, “As we try fr a cmprehensive sustainability transitin (转变), we need increasingly pwerful and mre systemic interpretatins f reality. ” The current strategy fr a sustainable future emphasizes ecnmic and technlgical prgress, but that is nt enugh. Learning is needed, t. A learning sciety relies n changes in its citizens’ values, beliefs and wrldviews.
“Hw we becme aware f ur everyday cnnectin t ther peple and nature at the level f ur emtins, bdy and mind stands at the cre f the sustainability transitin,” says Erkka Laininen, a c-authr f the study.
