      T that end, Andersn and ther Indigenus leaders have frmed the First Natins Renewable Energy Alliance(FREA) t push fr renewable energy in Indigenus cmmunities. They partner with private enterprises t supprt Indigenus cmmunities lking t switch t renewable energy.
      “We can build a pwer statin where the cmmunity exists,” Andersn says, “s peple are able t successfully live in the envirnment the way they want t live and have access t pwer which enables them t better determine their ecnmic future.”
      Only a handful f Indigenus cmmunities have set up renewable energy prjects in Australia. The Indigenus­wned and ­perated cmpany AllGrid Energy, fr instance, has installed slar panels and battery strage systems t replace diesel(柴油) generatrs in the cmmunities f Ngurrara and Kurnturlpara in the Nrthern Territry's Barkly Tableland. Within tw mnths f the system being installed in May 2016, peple were mving back t their hmelands, the cmmunities grwing frm just tw permanent residents t abut 40.
      But FREA will g ne step further, wrking with cmmunity leaders and acting as a cnduit(纽带) between the cmmunities and the businesses they are dealing with.       The eight­legged creatures are specially created t calm and cmfrt early newbrns. “In instances where the babies can't be held fr weeks, r even mnths, the familiarity f the parents' scent(气味) n the ctpuses can help with the bnding prcess because babies already knw it as a safe scent when parents can finally hld them,” Bianca says.
      The vlunteer prject began after a nurse reached ut t Bianca t create a prttype f ctpus she culd take int hspital fr a trial.
      “It tk me a gd fur t five mnths t teach myself hw t write a pattern and get it apprved,” explains Bianca, wh creates the handmade helpful ctpuses fr n cst t families in need.
      “I started making them as fast as I culd, but I wasn't able t make the amunt they needed.” Sn Bianca met the grup's ther c­funder Andrea Carey and the pair started creating the creatures tgether in their spare time.

      The nt­fr­prfit rganizatin Material Fcus, which cnducted the research, said the scale f the issue was huge and they wanted t encurage mre recycling.
      Mre than half a billin cheaply priced electrnic gds were bught in the UK in the past year alne—16 per secnd. Material Fcus findings shwed that f these items, 471m were thrwn away. This included 260m dispsable vapes, 26m cables, 29m LED, slar and decrative lights, 9.8m USB sticks, 4.8m miniature fans, etc.
      Sctt Butler, executive directr at Material Fcus, described it as “fast tech”. He said, “Peple shuld think carefully abut buying sme f the mre frivlus items in the first place.” He said the items peple bught were ften “cheap and small”, and that cnsumers may nt realize they cntain valuable materials that culd be salvaged if recycled.
      Small electricals can cntain precius materials including cpper, lithium and stainless steel. These cmpnents can be recycled and used in wind turbines, medical devices and electric vehicles. Material Fcus said that while peple were used t the idea f recycling larger electrical items such as fridges, lts f smaller devices were left unused in huses.
      Butler said, “We want t get the message acrss that anything with a plug, battery r cable can be recycled and there's smewhere near yu t d it. The scale f the issue is huge, but there's an easy slutin—just as the trend fr recycling and repurpsing fashin has grwn and grwn, we want t encurage the natin t recycle fast tech, guilt­free and fuss­free.”
      Material Fcus said that when cnsumers bught a cheap item, they saw it as dispsable. They estimate that UK citizens spent mre than £2.8bn n these cheap prducts in the past year. The nn­prfit grup described it as “the tip f the iceberg” when it cmes t the grwing issue f wasted electricals in the UK. Mre than 100,000 tnnes f waste electricals are thrwn away every year, and there are 880m electrical items f all kinds lying unused in the UK hmes.
