“The Analects f Cnfucius, cmmnly knwn as Lunyu, stands as a distinguished example f wrld literature.
The publicatin f its Maltese translatin will further enrich cultural exchanges between China and Malta,” says
Salvatre Giuffrè, a Maltese sinlgist and the translatr f the bk.
Giuffrè has been studying Chinese since his teenage years. During his time as a Chinese majr student in Italy,
he came int cntact with classical Chinese. “I needed t learn classical Chinese t grasp the central meaning f
Chinese literary culture and philsphy,” he explains. Cnsequently, he translated the bk directly frm the
      riginal versin.
“Lunyu was cmpsed in a dense (紧 凑 的 ) and brief manner, which makes understanding it rather
challenging,” he states. Giuffrè usually referenced versins f the bk written in mdern Chinese t explain
certain terms that he fund unclear, bscure r hard t understand. He als added cmments and explanatins t
make the text easier fr Maltese readers t understand.
Giuffrè dedicated apprximately tw years t making the bk accessible t Maltese readers, particularly
yung students, thrugh translatin. Currently, the Maltese versin is available fr lcal readers. It includes an
intrductin t Cnfucius’s life, the era he lived, his teachings, and the key cncepts, terms, names and figures
      mentined in the bk.
“I aimed t make it accessible t a brader readership,” Giuffrè states. “I hpe my translatin will aid in the
spread f Chinese culture and philsphy in Malta.” He expresses the hpe that cperatin between China and
Malta in the publishing sectr will fster pprtunities fr additinal translatin prjects f literary wrks.

Years f research n exercise have lng supprted the idea that cnsistent wrkuts ver time lead t bth
physical and mental benefits. But what abut shrt, intense perids f exercise? A team f scientists at UC Santa
Barbara has taken a clser lk and their study was recently published in Cmmunicatins Psychlgy.
“One f the mst cnsistent findings in the literature is that exercise prgrams — smething like a plan yu
wuld fllw, say, three times a week ver several mnths r years — imprve thinking skills and can even
prmte brain cell grwth,” said Barry Giesbrecht, a prfessr in the Department f Psychlgical & Brain
Sciences and senir authr f the study. “But studies lking at the effects f single, intense perids f exercise are
      much mre mixed.”
Fcusing n subjects between 18 ― 45 years ld, first authr Jrdan Garrett — wh graduated with his Ph. D.
frm the department in June-and the team reviewed thusands f exercise studies published between 1995 and
2023 t find cmmn patterns. Based n their analysis, cycling and high-intensity interval training (HIIT) prduced
the mst reliable imprvements in memry, attentin, decisin-making skills, infrmatin, prcessing, and ther
      mental abilities.

“We fund that high-energy activities had the largest effects,” Giesbrecht said. “Als, the effects were strnger
fr studies that tested cgnitin (认知) after exercise, as ppsed t during exercise. And lastly, the effects f
exercise lasting less than 30 minutes were greater than thse lasting ver 30 minutes. Our wrk shwed the
strngest evidence fr a psitive effect f single buts f exercise n cgnitin and that this evidence was impacted
      by a variety f factrs.”
“Anther interesting result is that the verall effect f a single perid f exercise was generally small,”
Giesbrecht said, nting that besides the variability (可变性) acrss the experiments, the enhancements may als be
small because they are typically measured when the physical activity is nt related t the cgnitive task. This raises
the “interesting” thery, he added, that perhaps using tasks that require the integratin f actins f ur bdy and
cgnitive systems may result in mre significant benefits. Giesbrecht and his team indicated that they plan t test
      this idea.
      8. Why des the authr mentin cnsistent wrkuts in paragraph 1?
      A. T emphasize the imprtance f regular exercise.
      B. T intrduce a cntrast with shrt, intense exercise.
      C. T explain the necessity f ding cnsistent exercise.
      D. T cmpare the benefits f different exercise duratin.
      9. What is paragraph 3 mainly abut?
      A. The methd and key findings f the study.
      B. The challenges f analyzing large datasets.
C The histrical backgrund f exercise research.
      D. Future plans t integrate exercise with cgnitive tasks.
      10. What was ne significant finding regarding the duratin f exercise and its cgnitive effects?
      A. Lnger exercise sessins are always better.
      B. Exercise must last at least ne hur fr benefits.
      C. Duratin f exercise had n impact n cgnitin.
      D. Exercise lasting less than 30 minutes had larger effects.
      11. What will the fllw-up study fcus n?
      A. Cmbining physical mvement with mental tasks.
      B. Extending the duratin f single exercise sessins.

Sir Isaac Newtn was a great astrnmer. Althugh he did nt use his reflecting telescpe t discver new
astrnmical phenmena, he did emply it t cmpletely transfrm ur view f the wrld we inhabit and the
      universe at large.
Reflecting telescpes use mirrrs t reflect and fcus light and enlarge images, distinguishing them frm
refractrs (折射望远镜) that rely n lenses (透镜). Their simplicity in cnstructin and ability t achieve much
greater sizes than refractrs have led t a transfrmatin in ur astrnmical knwledge and cmprehensin f the
      universe.
As light passes thrugh glass, varius clrs r bands are refracted at varying angles, leading t chrmatic
aberratin (色 差 ) and cnsequently, twisted images when viewed thrugh a lens. In the time f Newtn, the
technlgy fr prducing glass and lenses was still very primitive, and the challenges assciated with chrmatic
aberratin had nt been adequately addressed. Tday we can make lenses that have almst n chrmatic aberratin
but we can’t make them very large. As the size f a lens increases significantly, it becmes extremely heavy,
causing its wn weight t distrt the lens and cnsequently ruin the image quality.
Newtn’s telescpe slved these prblems. A mirrr desn’t allw light t pass. It simply bunces all the light
ff the surface. This means there’s n chrmatic aberratin. Plus, because we nly need t bunce light ff the
surface, we can supprt the entire mirrr n a base, reducing its weight. This allws us t build much larger mirrrs
      withut any distrtin.
While Galile is credited with the discvery f mns arund Jupiter and Halley with predicting the cmet’s
rbit, what Newtn did d was tie in with mathematics, astrnmy and ur cmprehensin f the universe thrugh
the use f his telescpe and his universal gravitatin thery.
The riginal telescpe cnstructed by Newtn is preserved and maintained by the Ryal Sciety f Lndn. It
is shwcased in Lndn and ccasinally embarks n internatinal turs as an element f exhibitins.
      12. What d we knw abut Newtn’s telescpe?
      A. It has a great size with cmplex structure.
      B. It relies n mirrrs instead f lenses.
      C. It can make the image smaller than a refractr.
      D. It helped Newtn uncver nvel astrnmical phenmena.
      第 7页/共 13页
      13. What prblems did Newtn’s telescpe manage t slve?
      A. Restrictins n the prductin. B. Issues with image quality.
      C. Challenges f lens making. D. Limits f light’s passing angles.
      14. Why des the authr mentin Galile and Halley?
      A. T state a fact. B. T raise a pint.
      C. T explain a cncept. D. T make a cmparisn.
      15. What is the main idea f the article?
      A. Newtn’s telescpe is preserved by the Ryal Sciety as a histrical scientific antique.
      B. Newtn’s telescpe simplified cnstructin and enabled larger sizes cmpared t refractrs.
      C. Newtn’s telescpe innvated astrnmy by slving prblems caused by lens limitatins.
      D. Newtn’s telescpe achieved breakthrugh imprvements ver refractrs, bserving new astrnmical
      phenmena.

Genes, the basic units f heredity, play a crucial rle in determining ur physical characteristics and health
cnditins. ___16___ With the develpment f mdern technlgy, genetic testing has becme an imprtant tl
      fr understanding ur bilgical makeup.
When yu take a genetic test scientists will analyze yur DNA sample. ___17___ Fr example, sme tests
can tell if yu carry genes that might increase yur risk f certain diseases like breast cancer r heart cnditins.
This knwledge can help peple take preventive measures early.
Hwever, genetic testing als raises ethical questins. ___18___ Shuld emplyers have access t this
infrmatin? What if insurance cmpanies use it t deny cverage? What if hspitals priritize treatments based n
genetic risks? These issues require careful cnsideratin.
___19___ This needs cuntries t wrk tgether, set clear rules, and prevent unfair treatment. Fr example,
the Glbal Alliance fr Genmics and Health (GA4GH) created the “Framewrk fr Respnsible Sharing f
Genmic and Health-related Data”. It unifies privacy rules in ver 40 cuntries, letting scientists study rare diseases
using annymus genetic data. At the same time, it requires strict cmpliance (遵守) f laws and stps any harmful
use f persnal infrmatin. These actins shw hw glbal teamwrk can prtect peple’s privacy while helping
      medical science mve frward.
      第 8页/共 13页
Thugh nt perfect, genetic testing ffers valuable insights. By understanding ur genetic risks, we can make
better lifestyle chices and wrk with dctrs t create persnalized health plans. Fr example, individuals with a
genetic tendency fr heart disease might increase cardivascular exercises and reduce saturated fat intake.
      ___20___
      A. Ultimately, this knwledge enables practive health management tailred t individual needs.
      B. They cntain cdes fr prteins that directly affect bdily functins and health.
      C. T address these risks, legal framewrks must balance privacy prtectin with research needs.
      D. Labratry technicians cmpare DNA samples t identify unique genetic markers.
      E. These analyses can detect gene variatins linked t inherited (遗传) diseases.
      F. The wnership and use f genetic infrmatin remain highly cntrversial (有争议 ).
      G. Effective data prtectin methds are essential fr securing genetic databases.
