There are dishes t scrub, bk reprts t cmplete, and meetings t attend. But nw I have a changed perspective - d smething each day that brings jy. When I care fr my sul and take a little “me time”, it might feel unprductive, but it’s als a gift t my whle family. A happy mm ften results in a happy family.
After that Sunday bike ride, Mnday inevitably came. The new day brught Sara discmfrt and anxiety. Fr hurs, I tried t d everything I culd think f t n avail, frm hlding her t distracting her with pictures. Then I remembered my jyride. S, I dimmed lights, pulled a chair and tray table clse t her bed, and dumped ut a 100-piece puzzle hummed as I srted thrugh the pieces. She was annyed at first, but I kept humming a srting. Then slwly, as I settled, s did she. I mved the tray clser, and her little hands went t wrk, helping me find all the blue-sky pieces.

Many factrs can influence whether a patient lives r dies. The quality f the drugs they receive, the rigur with which their symptms are mnitred, r — mre surprisingly — the gender f the attending physician.
A 2017 study by Yusuke Tsugawa and clleagues published in JAMA Internal Medicine analyzed medical recrds f 1.5 millin hspitalized lder adults frm 2011 t 2014. The study revealed that patients treated by female physicians had a 4% lwer risk f death and readmissin within 30 days cmpared t thse treated by male physicians. And mre recent studies have supprted the finding.
These studies are cnnected t the past findings, lking back at naturally ccurring data rather than randmized-cntrlled (随机对照) experiments. This culd cnceal any underlying factrs that might be driving the effect. Fr example, it culd be that female physicians tend t be assigned healthier patients than their male clleagues. In an experiment where patients were randmly assigned dctrs, any such links wuld be brken.
T cntrl fr such effects, mst studies try t accunt fr the impact f different hspitals and prcedures in their analysis, with sme cmparing acrss grups f patients wh are matched fr age, sex, and illness severity, as well as grups f surgens matched by age and surgical experience. N matter hw the data are sliced, female physicians seem t perfrm better.
Researchers say the next step is t figure ut why. Dr. Christpher Wallis, the lead authr n several f the Canadian papers, suggests, “I think it’s a series f behavirs that are linked with gender. Female physicians tend t spend mre time with patients, are mre likely t prvide preventive care, and tend t stick mre clsely t clinical guidelines than their male clleagues d. This culd minimize the risk f preventable deaths.” Further investigatin int the factrs cntributing t these differences may enhance healthcare quality and equity acrss the medical prfessin.
8.What can we learn frm Yusuke Tsugawa’s study?
A.Dctr’s gender decides the patient survival rate.
B.Men dctrs’ patients are mre likely t be hspitalized.
C.Patients treated by wmen dctrs have better utcmes.
D.Wmen dctrs are mre cmpetent than male nes.
9.What des Paragraph 3 mainly talk abut?
      A.Benefits f randm trials.B.Appraches f the researches.
      C.Practices f cntrlled experiments.D.Limitatins f the studies.

      B.cnsidering a set f cntrlled factrs
C.using the same treatment plan in every hspital
D.cmparing the data frm randmized patients

      D.challenge traditinal medical practices

Diabetes (糖尿病) researchers frm the Icahn Schl f Medicine at Munt Sinai have develped a new understanding f hw human beta cell regenerative (再生的) drugs wrk. These drugs, develped at Munt Sinai, may hld prmise fr mre than 500 millin peple with diabetes in the wrld. The results f this study were published this mnth in Cell Reprts Medicine.
Diabetes develps when cells knwn as beta cells becme unable t prduce insulin, a chemical substance essential t regulating bld sugar levels. While great prgress has been made tward discvering a lng-term treatment, nne are appliable fr millins f patients acrss the wrld.
Fr mre than 15 years, researchers at the Icahn Schl f Medicine at Munt Sinai have wrked tirelessly t find a slutin t cure diabetes by identifying a drug that culd make human beta cells regenerate. In 2015, Munt Sinai researchers discvered the first such drug, called harmine. Harmine is a member f a class f drugs called DYRK1A inhibitrs (抑制剂). Finally, in July 2024, they shwed that harmine alne increases human beta cell mass by 300 percent, and if a GLP-1RA is added, by 700 percent.
A key questin has been hw harmine causes beta cells t regenerate. In the newest study, the research team reprts that the new, regenerated beta cells may be cming frm an unexpected surce: a secnd pancreatic cell type called alpha cells. Since alpha cells are abundant in peple with type 1 and type 2 diabetes, they may serve as a surce fr new beta cells in bth cmmn types f diabetes.
“This may mean that peple with all frms f diabetes have a large ptential ‘cntainer’ fr future beta cells, just waiting t be activated by drugs like harmine.” said Esra Karakse, crrespnding authr f the study. “A simple pill, perhaps tgether with a GLP-1RA like semaglutide, is affrdable and accessible t the millins f peple with diabetes,” said Dr. Stewart, anther researcher.
12.What can be inferred frm drugs develped at Munt Sinai?
A.They strengthen the effects f each beta cell.B.They have yet t appear in relevant jurnals.
C.They are taken by ver 500 millin patients.D.They help regulate the quantity f beta cell.
13.What d we knw abut harmine?
      A.It belngs t ne part f DYRK1A.B.It stps the frmatin f DYRK1A.
C.It is the first drug t cure diabetes.D.It is useless withut a GLP-1RA.
14.Hw des harmine cause beta cells t regenerate?
A.By transfrming alpha cells int beta cells.B.By enabling existing beta cells t reprduce.
C.By pushing mre rgans t release beta cells.D.By creating a safe envirnment fr beta cells.
15.What is the suitable title fr the text?
A.Researchers gain a new insight int diabetes.B.Researchers spare n effrts t cure diabetes.
C.Researchers mve clser t a cure fr diabetes.D.Researchers reveal a “cntainer” fr beta cells.
