That suddenly changed when the Internet caught wind that mre than ten f McKena’s students at Westerly High Schl banded tgether t build a bus stp fr a lcal schl student wh is wheelchair dependent.
It all started when 5-year-ld Ryder Killam’s father, Tim, psted n Facebk in September that the family was seeking (寻找) a bus stp t replace their bus shelter. Tim Killam was trying t find a way t keep his sn, wh is cmpletely wheelchair dependent, sheltered frm the unpleasant New England weather while waiting fr the schl bus. The Facebk pst caught the attentin f a lcal guidance cunselr wh tld the Killams t reach ut t McKena.
McKena had been sitting with ne f his students, Masn Heald, trying t figure ut a senir prject when Tim Killam’s email reached his inbx. It was perfect timing. “I lked at him. I said, ‘Yu’re designing a bus stp,’” McKena said. With the help f 14 ther students, Heald gt t wrk.
After abut a mnth f hard wrk, Killam’s replacement — which was designed s he culd actually sit in this chair and see the bus — was finished. The end result was a hut ( 小屋) with tw windws that is up t ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) standards.
After the cmmunity caught wind f the stry, smene drpped ff a blanket (毯子) fr Ryder, Tim Killam said. The Killams were blwn away by the supprt frm the cmmunity.
It “makes getting n and ff the bus perfect,” Tim Killam said. “The size is perfect and because it’s up t ADA standards, we are able t be inside with him. Ryder can get anxius (焦虑的), s having ne f us with him is s imprtant.”

Last mnth, Singapre saw 14 days where the daily maximum ( 最高的) temperature reached 34 degrees. The suthern and suth-eastern parts f the island als saw warmer nights with a minimum temperature f arund 28 degrees.
As temperatures climb, experts said peple may have a higher risk f develping heat-related injuries r illnesses and special fcus shuld be paid t these diseases. Currently, cases f heat injuries and deaths in Singapre are lw cmpared t places such as India and eastern Eurpe, where deadly summer heatwaves have killed thusands f peple. Accrding t data prvided by the Ministry f Health, between 71 and 124 peple were admitted t hspitals fr heat-related illnesses each year frm 2010 t 2020.
But with Singapre heating up twice as fast as the rest f the wrld, temperatures culd sar ( 猛增) t new heights in the cming years. Accrding t the Natinal Climate Change Secretariat, Singapre’s yearly mean temperatures have been cntinuusly climbing ver the past few years, increasing frm 26.9 degrees in 1980 t 28 degrees last year. On 4 December, Munt Semeru vlcan, n the island f Java, erupted. Munt Semeru is 3, 676 metres abve sea level. Rescue wrkers are still searching fr peple wh are missing. Hwever, bad weather has slwed rescuers dwn. Mre than 5, 000 are thught t have been displaced (frced t mve) by the eruptin. Arund 2, 000 peple are staying in temprary emergency shelters prduced by rescue teams. The shelters are giving ut fd.
