Acrss the Mara, mre camps are emplying wmen. They’re in the prcess f training their first female guide. Sphie, a veteran in the Mara at the wheel, recalls that previusly girls culdn’t g t schl as parents thught it a waste. But nw, the elders recgnize what they d, and that everyne needs t cntribute t the family incme. The perceptin has changed: “if men can drive, we can drive; if men can guide, we can guide, t. “
It’s nt lng befre Sphie find a mther buffal and her calf hiding in the lng grass. As turists watch them, Sphie tells them f the legendary black rhin called Mary, wh raised a new ppulatin f the creatures in the area and inspired the Kenyan gvernment t establish a prtectin prject.

Tie an Italian’s hands behind his back and he’ll be speechless, which is an ld jke in the US. This rested n a
natinal steretype: Italians are talkative and emtinal, and all that arm-waggling suppsedly ges t prve it.
Hwever, Susan Gldin-Meadwin, authr f the bnk Thinking with Yur Hnds, has a rather different view. “Almst everyne gestures, nt just Italians,” she laughs. “Cnference interpreters gesture in their little rms, thugh n ne is lking at them. Even peple brn blind gesture when they speak, including t each ther. In the TV series, The Crwn, Lady Diana is warned that her hands may reveal her real emtins, which culd be dangerus and that they have t be tied tgether s she can learn t speak withut gesturing.”
The gesture under discussin here is the s-called “c-speech gesture”. It is much mre abstract than such symblic gestures like a finger ver the lips fr “Silence!” r raising a finger t mean “Great!”. Like wrds, d such symblic gestures are fixed within cultures (but vary between them). Instead, c-speech gestures that accmpany speech are anther channel f infrmatin and emtin. Fr example, experimental subjects are asked t watch a film in which a cat runs, but they are tld t lie and say it jumped. They may d s in wrds-while their hands will make a running mvement. The c-speech gesture is nt sign languages, which have clearly defined wrds and grammar and differ frm place t place just as spken nes d, either.
And the c-speech gestures have great ptential fr practical applicatins. Fr example, teachers are encuraged bth t use gestures themselves and t bserve thse their students make. Sme students wh fail at a tricky mathematics prblem may gesture in a way that indicates they are n the edge f getting it; they shuld be taught differently frm the nes whse gestures suggest that they are entirely in perplexity.
“Children with language delays caused by brain injuries at r arund birth are likely t catch up verbally by the age f abut 30 mnths, if they gesture as much as their peers. Thse wh gesture less are mre likely t need early assistance,” Susan Gldin-Meadwin adds. “C-speech gesturing is nt just abut a lack f cntrl. It is abut thinking and cmmunicatin, and is an aid t bth.”
    28. What des Susan Gldin-Meadwin imply in paragraph 2?
    A. C-speech gestures are used by all f us.
    B. Lady Diana is prbably an emtinal wman.
    C. Italians are very talkative and gesture t much.
    D. It is unnatural fr the blind t gesture t each ther.
    29. What can we learn abut sign languages?
    A. They are as abstract as c-speech gestures.
    B. They have distinctly structured wrds and grammar.
    C. They are usually learned by human beings naturally.
    D. They vary frm culture t culture and persn t persn.
    30. What des the underlined phrase “in perplexity” in the paragraph 4 mean?
    A. Cnfused. B. Relaxed. C. Curius. D. Angry.
    31. What des the authr suggest teachers d in the passage?
    A. Put enugh trust in students. B. Teach as many tricky prblems as pssible.
    C. Encurage students t tell the truth. D. Observe the c-speech gestures carefully.

Less well understd is the impact n the rhins after hrn remval. T learn mre, the researchers in this new effrt studied the habits f black rhins in the Manyni Private Game Reserve in Suth Africa. The team started by making maps f the rhin range. They used data frm sightings made befre a dehrning prject began in 2016 and then fr sightings made ver the subsequent years.
They fund that after the lss f a hrn, male rhins greatly reduced their range—sme lst up t 80% f their territry. Fr sme females, the team reprts, the reduced range was even greater. The grup repeated their wrk in nine ther reserves using 15 years f data-gathering and fund similar results. The researchers als fund that the remval f hrns made the black rhins less scial with ne anther-instead f interacting, they wuld intentinally avid ne anther.
    32. What is paragraph 2 mainly abut cncerning the rhins?
    A. The value f their hrns. B. The reductin in their ppulatin.
    C. The cnsequence f dehrning them. D. The rle f armed rangers in prtecting them.

    A. Their survival risks. B. Their gender identities.
    C. Their interactin habits. D. Their reprductin patterns.
    34. What might be the researchers’ attitude t dehrning rhins?
    A. Favrable. B. Tlerant. C. Uncncerned. D. Objective.
    35. Which f the fllwing can best summarize the text?
    A. Rhin numbers drp despite prtectin. B. Effrts are made t prtect black rhins.
    C. Dehrning affects rhins’ scial behavirs. D. Hrns f rhins are remved fr many reasns.

Our Sandy is barking again as the perfrmance is in prgress that Friday afternn. I walked nstage t tie ut the dg, ur third Sandy, the dg wh was suppsed t be merely a silent supprting rle rescued by the leading actress in ur schl’s musical. The first Sandy barked at everyne, and the secnd caused chas with his exciting running. Mr. Lmis, ur teacher directr, nearly gt a stuffed animal r an actr in a dg suit.
Smehw, as the assistant stage manager, finding anther suitable dg sn had becme my jb. Fr the shw, I fund 1930s’ furniture and designed a mansin stairway, s I tk pride in this wrk. But finding a dg began t lk like an impssible task. I knew that this dg had t be perfect. It wuld als have t lk the part. This was theater, and the audience wanted t be swept away by the magic.
I gt a dg, Farley, wh had been hit by a car befre, but then wrked part-time at the airprt cmfrting passengers wh are nervus abut flying. Farley was patient and calm with sulful eyes and black spts, yet the main thing abut him was that he lst a leg.
I didn’t think that there was any way we culd take this dg. There shuldn’t be anything t strange nstage. Peple might find his lack f a furth leg distracting. That was smething I’d always heard-yu can’ make the audience nervus with imperfectins.
Truer wrds were never spken. That was why I chse t stay backstage, despite my lve fr singing and dancing. My giant purple birthmark that cvered half f my face wuld be t much f a distractin. I had been in a musical and lved it, but afterward I verheard a lady telling Mr. Lmis hw kind it had been fr him t chse me. After that, I degraded myself t wrking behind the scenes. I decided that I culdn’t distract frm the main shw.
Perhaps Farley culd be a great cmfrt dg backstage fr actrs with stage fright. But he culdn’t be ne f the main perfrmers. Unfrtunately, my weekend search fr anther dg did nt yield any ther pssibilities. 注意:
