ChatGPT, designed by OpenAI to carry on conversations that make sense, has become a viral excitement. The AI-powered tool went from zero to a million users in just five days! Its ability to provide in-depth answers to user questions has even drawn the attention of distinguished technology companies.
The intelligent robot understands what the user says or types and then responds in a way that makes sense. Its vast body of knowledge has been gathered from the internet and archived books. It is further trained by humans. This makes ChatGPT a useful tool for researching almost any topic.
“We have a lot of information on the internet, but you normally have to Google it, then read it and then do something with it,” says Ricardo, chief science officer and co-founder of AI company Erudit. “Now you’ll have this resource that can process the whole internet and all of the information it contains for you to answer your question.”
ChatGPT cannot think on its own. It depends on the information that it has been trained on. As a result, the AI tool works well for things that have accurate data available. However, when unsure, ChatGPT can get creative and flow out incorrect responses. OpenAI cautions users to check the information no matter how logical it sounds. Also, ChatGPT has only been trained with information till 2021. Hence, it cannot be relied upon for anything that happened after that.
Experts believe ChatGPT has limitless potential to solve real-world problems. It can translate long texts into different languages, create content on almost any topic, and even summarize books.
However, ChatGPT has received mixed reactions from educators. Some believe it could serve as a valuable tool to help build literacy skills in the classroom. It could also be used to teach students difficult science or math concepts. But other educators think ChatGPT will encourage students to cheat. They fear this will prevent them from building critical thinking and problem-solving skills. As a result, many districts are starting to ban its use in schools.
    24. What is the unique feature of ChatGPT?
    A. It has the largest number of users. B. It can answer users’ questions.
    C. It can engage in meaningful conversations. D. It has artificial intelligence.
    25. What makes ChatGPT helpful to research various topics?
    A. Its availability of up-to-date data. B. Its accurate information.
    C. Its capability of information processing. D. Its vast body of questions.
    26. Why do ChatGPT users have to be cautious when using it?
    A. ChatGPT offers illogical information. B. ChatGPT lacks creativity.
    C. ChatGPT is unable to think itself. D. ChatGPT is not properly trained.
    27. What is the author’s attitude towards ChatGPT?
    A. Intolerant. B. Disapproving. C. Favorable. D. Objective.
    C
“You need to sign this,” my son Joe informed me. “What is it?” I asked. Rolling his eyes with a sense of impatience, Joe replied, “Your permission. And it’s due tomorrow!”
I learned that Joe’s sixth-grade class would be taking a field trip to the state capital. “That sounds like fun,” I said. “I’ve always wanted to go there.” “You can’t come!” Joe answered. Puzzled, I asked. “Why not?” “Because you always come on field trips!”
Of course, I always joined his class on field trips. Being a chaperone (监护人) on a field trip is one of the advantages that comes with being a mom, a vacation day in a carcer that offers few opportunities for a change of scenery. “You don’t want me to be a chaperone?” “Give someone else’s mom a chance,” he suggested. What was surprising was how much I minded being so impolitely removed from the short list of willing chaperones by my own son.
When Joe was in kindergarten, his class planned a pretend trip to Norway. The day before the trip, Joe woke up not feeling well.
After learning that he didn’t have a fever, I asked, “You don’t want to miss getting ready for the trip to Norway, do you?” “I guess not,” he said.
But when I picked him up at the end of the day, the teacher whispered, “Joe got a little upset today.” “What happened?” “He doesn’t want to go to Norway without you.” So that was what had been bothering my 5-year-old. He thought his class was really flying to Norway on their wooden chairs in their paper airplane. He believed those passports and tickets he and his classmates had been making were the real deal.
Preadolescence fell upon my family as my husband and I found ourselves preparing for our son’s upcoming teen years with the same trepidation as someone about to climb an ice-covered mountain wearing high heels.
Joe needed to take a field trip without me accompanying him. And I needed to let him. I’m glad he doesn’t need me all the time.
    28. What did the author really mind?
    A. The additional responsibilities as a mom.
    B. Being denied rudely by her son as a chaperone.
    C. Having missed the chance to visit the state capital.
    D. Being asked by her son to sign a permission.
    29. What made Joe upset when he was five years old?
    A. His going to Norway without his mom.
    B. The occurrence of his fever on the journey.
    C. His fear of the paper airplane’s crashing down.
    D. The loss of his passport and ticket.
    30. What does the underlined word “trepidation” in Paragraph 7 probably mean?
    A. Excitement. B. Expectation. C. Nervousness. D. Determination.
    31. What did the author realize about Joe at last?
    A. He hated being controlled by parents.
    B. He was longing for his parents’ love.
    C. He was unwilling to obey rules.
    D. He was becoming less dependent.
    D
A new experiment shows that the more energy consumed by a clock, the more accurate its timekeeping.
Clocks consume energy and release heat. A kitchen clock, for example, does this by using up its battery. Generally the most accurate clocks require the most energy, which suggests a fundamental connect ion between energy consumption and accuracy. This is what an international team of scientists from Lancaster. Oxford, and Vienna set out to test.
To do this, they built a particularly simple clock, consisting of a super-thin membrane (薄膜). combined with an electronic circuit. Each vibration (振动) of the membrane generated one electrical tick (滴答). The inventive aspect of this design is that it is powered simply by heating the membrane, while the complete flow of energy through the clock can be measured electrically.
The scientists found that the more heat they supplied, the more accurately the clock ran. In fact, the accuracy was directly relative to the heat released. To make the clock twice as accurate, they needed to supply twice as much heat.
The experiment shows a similarity between the operation of a clock and a steam engine. With a steam engine there is fundamental restriction on how much heat we must supply to do a desired amount of work. This restriction is the famous-Second Law of Thermodynamics (热力学) which is central to modern engineering. What this experiment suggests is that clocks, like engines, are restricted by the Second Law, with their output being accurate ticks instead of mechanical work.
Dr Edward Laird of Lancaster University said: “This experiment suggests that clocks are also restricted by thermodynamics. It also poses an interesting question: are all possible clocks limited in this way, or is it just a characteristic of the ones we have studied?”
Interestingly, many everyday clocks have an efficiency that is close to what the scientists’ analysis predicts. For example, their analysis predicts that a wristwatch whose accuracy per tick is one part in ten million must consume at least a microwatt of power. In fact, a basic wristwatch usually consumes only a few times this amount. The laws of thermodynamics, discovered in the nineteenth century, are still finding new applications today.
    32. What do the scientists want to test about clocks?
    A. How energy influences their accuracy.
    B. Whether to restrict their heat supply.
    C. How to make them particularly simple.
    D. Whether they are similar to steam engines.
    33. In what way do clocks work differently from steam engines according to the experiment?
    A. The restriction from the Second Law.
    B. The form of their output.
    C. The accuracy of their work.
    D. The law behind their operation.
    34. What will Dr Edward Laird most likely agree with?
    A. Further studies should be done.
    B. More questions should be raised.
    C. Restrictions on clocks should be lifted.
    D. Suggestions of the experiment should be adopted.
    35. What is the article mainly about?
    A. The Second Law of Thermodynamics.
    B. A new experiment.
    C. The energy consumption of clocks.
    D. A simple clock.

    阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Do you often find it difficult to concentrate if you are not interested in what you are learning or if you have better things to think about? 36 However, understanding how to do it, and knowing what is distracting you, can help.
Scientists have looked at what makes us procrastinate and found a number of ways to help us stay in the zone. ________ Research by Science Focus magazine found silence is best for concentration, or a gentic background hum and coffee shop noise is great! It also found turning off notifications on your phone, or switching it off altogether, removes a major distraction and helps us focus on the task at hand.
Another possible cure for a short attention span is brain training. Psychologists and neuroscientists are increasingly interested in our ability to knuckle down and have looked at what we can change inside our head to make us concentrate. Attention Researcher Nilli Lavie of University College London has found that making a task more visually demanding takes up more processing power and leaves the brain nothing left to process distractions. 38
There are more practical tips to keeping your mind focused. 39 Chewing some gum may also help! It’s possible the movement in your mouth occupies parts of the brain that might otherwise get distracted.
But according to Science Focus magazine, distraction isn’t all bad. If we were always so focused that we never got distracted, we’d miss potential changes, such as threats in our environment. 40
    A. Distraction is vital for survival.
    B. One of the most obvious things is climinating (消除) noise.
    C. Therefore, brain training can effectively shorten an attention span.
    D. These include making a list of what you have to do or finding a quiet workspace.
    E. Staying focused can be a great challenge.
    F. So, keeping your mind busy might be the answer.
    G. Distraction is equally as important as concentration.

Ever think you’re getting enough sleep only to wake up tired? I’m not you-it happens to the best of us. Recently, scientists say they 58 (discover) the secret to waking up clear-headed and 57 (refresh) each and every morning.
According to a new study from the University of California, Berkeley, 58 (publish) in Nature Communications, beyond sleep quality, the second main feature 59 . (predict) day-to-day changes in morning alertness (机敏) is the intensity of physical activity the day before. In particular, researchers have found that when the extent of an individual’s physical activity is comparatively greater the day before, people feel more alert the next morning.
Another factor happens not on the day before or even the night before. It is 60 participants consume for breakfast that explains their alertness levels. When 61 (individual) consume the “high carbs” breakfast, they experience higher levels of alertness.
Beyond the effects of the high carbohydrate meal itself, one of the 62 (strong) outcomes shown in the study is the marked reduction in alertness on days when participants consume a lot of sugar. 第二节(满分25分)
    阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When I was a child, my mother told my sister, who had a 10-inch very obvious scar (伤疤) on her arm, “Nancy, if you ignore the scar, other people will ignore it. It does not mean they will not notice it, but it means it will not matter to them if it doesn’t matter to you.”
It never occurred to me that something like this would happen to my son years later. Sending a child off to college can certainly be stressful for concerned parents. It was 2018 that my son went off to college. He rarely contacted us. I couldn’t help asking about other aspects, which sometimes made him complain that I didn’t treat him as an adult.
To be honest, my son is excellent. Some of my friends always tell me that they admire my son’s characters and they hope their sons could have some of them.
Unexpectedly, it was 4 o’clock in the morning in 2020, when I received the phone call. “This is the emergency room calling and your son was just brought in with severe burns on his face, neck and arms. We have called for an aircraft and are going to fly him to the burn unit in Seattle.” Seattle was 350 miles from his college, so we knew immediately this was serious.
The doctor described the reason, which caused the burns. At 6 am, my son and his friends decided to barbecue hamburgers in the courtyard of their apartment. When they li t the charcoal, it burst into flames because they had sprayed too much gasoline. The flames caught my son’s shirt tail and shot from his waist to well over his head.
Fortunately, one of the boys who was quick-minded grasped my son and rolled him on the grass. While it saved his life, it was not in shape to save him from severe burns and the terrible scars.
After he recovered from the treatments, the doctors told him they would not do plastic surgery (整形手术) for 6 months because it takes that long for the skin to stop shrinking and wrinkling.
    注意:
    1.所续写短文的词数应为150词左右;
    2.续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好。

    Dear Sam,
Knowing that you’re interested in Chinese culture, especially Tang poetry, I am writing to give a brief introduction about it. Tang poetry, representing the traditional Chinese culture, is a very important literary form which enjoys great popularity in China.
As the golden age of poems, the Tang Dynasty produced many outstanding poets, among whom Li Bai, Du Fu, and Bai Juyi were the most well-know n in history. When it comes to studying poems, you’d better grasp the meaning firstly, and then try to recite the whole poem. If you choose the right method and work hard, your learning ability can be improved.
Welcome to China and I’m looking forward to your view about the Tang poems.
    Yours,
    Lihua
    第二节:读后续写
    参考范文:
The doctors suggested he return to college with scars of severe burns temporarily. Although I knew that there were going to be storms in life, it was hard for me to imagine that a handsome and sunny boy would return to his classmates with scars. I really didn’t know how to comfort him. After all, the scars were on him. Not all of us could be able to turn that particular page successfully. It was at this time that I remembered what my mother said to my sister. It was those words that enabled her to overcome her psychological barriers and lead a smooth life.
So I told him about Nancy’s childhood. I passed the wisdom on to my son. Realizing my complex feelings, he smiled and comforted me instead. He took my advice to heart and returned to school with his head held high. By the end of the six-month waiting period, he decided that the scars did not matter. So he made the decision to give up any plastic surgery. We all have “scars” that we believe will keep people away from us. Put your imperfections out of your mind and concentrate on what you value within yourself, and your beauty will shine through.

    高二英语试卷听力原文
    Text 1
M: I’m going to the party at Carol’s house.
W: You can’t be serious! We’ve got two tests at school tomorrow.
    Text 2
M: Excuse me for calling you so late, but I have something urgent to tell you!
    W: That’s all right.
    Text 3
M: Where are you going on vacation this summer?
W: I’ve heard about a nice place called the Swiss Chalet. It’s 18 dollars a day or 115 dollars a week.
    Text 4
M: Is there anything I can do for you?
W: Yes, I’d like to talk to someone about these socks. They’ve only been worn three or four times and they’re full of holes already.
    Text 5
M: What did you think of the concert performed in the music hall last Friday?
W: Great. It was really wonderful. But I didn’t see you there then. Where were you?
M: I was just in the music hall then. I had a seat in the second row.
    Text 6
    M: 2687435. Who’s calling?
W: This is Helen Adams. Could I speak to my husband?
M: Sorry, Mr. Adams is out. Can I take a message?
W: Could you tell him that my mother is arriving on Thursday? At about 1: 00 p. m.
M: Right, Mrs. Adams. I’ll do that. Where are you, in case he wants to ring you?
W: I’m not at home. The number here is 7733298.
    M: 7733298. OK. Goodbye.
    Text 7
    W: I suppose you’ve heard about John.
M: No, has something happened to him?
W: Nothing bad. He got a new position that he applied for last year.
M: To London? Great! He has hardly talked about anything else since he put in for that post. When does he leave?
    W: Next Sunday.
M: You mean a week from tomorrow?
W: That is right. I’m going to have a going-away party for him on Friday evening. I hope you can make it.
M: I’ll sure try. Now that he is going to be living in London, I might finally get the chance to visit over there. I hope he finds a big flat with an extra bedroom.
    Text 8
M: Where would you like to enjoy yourself if time and money were no problem?
W: If I were rich and had a lot of spare time, I’d go to the Caribbean in winter, to Sweden in summer, travel about in Britain in spring and stay at home in London in autumn.
    M: How would you travel?
W: By train, of course! And you?
M: I’d like to go on a worldwide voyage calling at all the exciting port s of the world.
    W: How would you travel?
M: In a boat, of course.
W: But wouldn’t you get rather dulled traveling around the world for so long?
M: Certainly not. And then once I’d seen the world I’d be satisfied to settle down at home in England. After all, it’s got some of the nicest scenery in the world.
    Text 9
W: So, here we are, deep in the forest. With me is Dr. Mike Green. Dr. Green, can you tell us a little about this wonderful place?
M: Yes, of course. As you can see, the forest is full of trees, birds, and insects.
W: Yes, there are some strange and beautiful plants everywhere. How many different kinds of plants are there?
M: Well, in just one square kilometer of the forest, you can find about one thousand five hundred different kinds of plants.
W: And there are hundreds of trees, too, aren’t there?
M: Yes, there are. In fact, here are about seven hundred and fifty different kinds of trees in one square kilometer.
W: Really? Now I’m sure the people listening to this program can hear this unbelievable noise. It is really very loud. What’s making all the noise?
M: Well, of course, the forest is full of living things. For example, you can find about four hundred different kinds of birds in just one square kilometer.
    W: Really? How interesting!
    Text 10
M: Last month, some Singaporean students visited our school and studied with us for a week. As a result, I got the chance to find out what school life is like in Singapore. Students have a shorter school day there. In Singapore, school begins at 8: 00 a. m. and ends at 1: 50 p. m. Each class only lasts half an hour. Students have no breaks between classes, but they have a 30-minute tea break after 3 or 4 classes. After school, most students attend extra classes, such as dance and painting classes.
Singapore is multicultural. In schools, students include Chinese, Indians, Malays and Westerners, and teachers teach in English. It’s the official language in Singapore. Singaporean students have the same pressure as we have. They also have some pressure from the entrance exam. After school, they take different extra courses. When they are in Grade 6, they face the pressure of the middle school entrance exam.
