    Wrds n paper are nt a language. A language lives thrugh the peple wh speak it. S Baird funded the Wampanag Language Reclamatin Prject. She teaches cmmunity classes and family camps. Kids in grade schl and high schl have the pprtunity t learn the language.
    The Wampanags have lived fr 12000 years in Massachusetts and parts f Rhde Island. When the Pilgrims (清教徒) met the first Indigenus peple, thse were the Wampanags. The English settlers brught disease that killed thusands-an estimated tw-thirds f the Wampanag Natin died-as well as war and rules that fragmented (分裂) the tribes. There nce were 69 tribes in the natin; nw there are three. Baird is a citizen f the Mashpee tribe. Her ancestrs left a key t their language. They translated the King James Bible int Wampanag.     Baird describes a visin she had where her ancestrs helped her see it was time t bring the language hme. She began her research, which led her t a graduate degree at Massachusetts Institute f Technlgy (MIT), where she learned frm and wrked with ther linguists.     W: N. I left in 1988. I’ve been a free designer since then. I’ve designed fr sme Italian cmpanies as well as tw American cmpanies. And in the last five years, I’ve als been designing fr the British cmpany, Burberry.
    M: What have yu been designing fr them?
    W: Mstly handbags and smetimes shes and jackets. Yu knw, the industry has changed a lt because the quality f prducts frm ther cuntries has imprved a lt. But Italian quality and design are still wrld-famus.
